"CD showcases student bands - Release party planned next month in Carlsbad"

OCEANSIDE — Although rock stars from Pete Townshend to Marilyn Manson have pontificated about rock 'n' roll's demise, young volume junkies at El Camino High School are intent on keeping the institution alive.

“We're taking on the world, one all-ages venue at a time,” said El Camino High School junior Matthew Berry, who is guitarist and vocalist for Without Warning.

Berry's band is one of several in El Camino High's Rock Band Music Club, which formed in the fall.

“We're one of the only clubs that are on the move,” said Matthew, 17. “We're constantly meeting.”

The students' music is featured on “Punk Rock High,” a compilation CD that includes rock, punk, ska, reggae and hip-hop. It is performed almost entirely by current and former students of the Oceanside school. Carlsbad High's One Way Flight also has a song on the CD.

A release party for the CD will be at 1 p.m. May 23 at Hensley's Flying Elephant, 850 Tamarack Ave., in Carlsbad. Admission is free. The CD will be available for $5.

The term “punk” in the title refers to the students' do-it-yourself ethos, said Tom Voris, El Camino economics and history teacher.

“Punk is just a frame of mind,” said Voris, whose own ska-punk band, the Fabulous Rudies, played on the Warped Tour five years in a row.

The CD will include two Rudies tracks, with backing from members of the Rock Band Music Club.

Junior varsity baseball coach Isaac Bell said his players like to warm up to the club's music.

“We have a couple of the bands' CDs that we put on the intercom while (the kids) are getting ready for practice or games,” Bell said. “There's a couple of CDs (the team) has us play over and over.”

The rock club got started when senior Aidan Spencer of the band Midnight Rose pitched the idea to Voris. Two more students, members of Without Warning, gave Voris their four-song demo CD, and he was sold.

Aidan, guitarist for the Led Zeppelin-influenced Midnight Rose, said he initially approached Voris to ask for advice about the music business – something Voris has often given to budding El Camino bands.

El Camino High graduate Travis Kaapke, guitarist for reggae-rock band Rootsicali, said Voris taught him how to book and promote shows.

Some of Rootsicali's first shows were events at El Camino, when the band was known as Noiz. Rootsicali, which is also on the “Punk Rock High” CD, has since played at the House of Blues and opened for Eek-A-Mouse.

“I think it really helped get our name out there,” said Kaapke, 19. “Our first fans really came out of El Camino.”

Bands that are part of the rock club often benefit from working together. When booking shows, the bands can boost their marketability by sharing a bill and fan bases. If an amplifier is in the shop or a band is short a microphone stand, it can borrow equipment from another band in the club.

“It's almost like a (musicians) union,” said senior Alec Erickson, 18, bassist for Midnight Rose.

Without Warning lead guitarist Chris Dobbins said going into the studio to record was an invaluable education.

“You actually have to know the notes you're playing, what time signature you're in, and you have to know all the technical stuff,” said Chris, 17. “It really shows your true colors as a musician.”

What can sound like a perfect performance in a garage, bedroom or live venue can easily unravel when working with professional recording equipment, Without Warning's Eric Seeley said.

“You'll be playing and you'll be, like, that sounds solid, that's perfect, let's go into the studio,” said Eric, 18. “Then you get in the studio and set everything with a metronome and you don't have it perfect.”

Studio time is not cheap, Voris said.

“Just to get one band in the studio is $1,500, and that's just for the day's recordings,” he said. “Then we've had to go back and fix things.”

That has meant a lot of fundraising for club members.

The club is still seeking donations and probably will have to repay some costs through CD sales, Voris said.

The CD project also has provided opportunities for nonmusicians to get involved.

Graphic design instructor Aaron Grable had his students design cover concepts for the CD. Grable's students met with the bands and created designs for potential use as CD art or in promotional materials. The winning design was created by senior Mike Rafalik.

“It was a win-win situation for the students,” Grable said. “They got the experience and exposure, and up-and-coming bands with little to no money basically got free graphic design work.”

Aidan's mother, Rhonda Spencer, said Voris and the club helped turn her son's “dream of playing in a band” into a reality. After graduating, Aidan plans to attend the Musicians Institute in Hollywood.

“Going from nothing to this level has been very, very exciting,” she said.

“Where bands can be very competitive, the level of support for one another has been very impressive.”

“Punk Rock High” will be available at local Hot Topic stores this summer and through iTunes.

"The Fabulous Rudies"

Cassandra and Tom take some time out at Warped ’07 in Vancouver, BC to chat with us.

popYOUlarity: What is the best thing about Warped Tour so far?
Fab Rudies:The diversity of people, and there are so many different bands in one place. It is all ages, everyone can come. Wish there would have been more of that when we were younger. Just being able to travel and play every day, meet people, just do what we love to do!

popYOUlarity: What is the best thing about your music?
Fab Rudies:There are seven people in the band, so there are a lot of instruments. It is very different from a lot of the stuff that is out on Warped Tour. We’re Ska, Rock, Alternative; It is kind of more of a collective sound. It is very positive music, too.

popYOUlarity: When you can’t see the bright side of life, what do you do to help polish the dull side?
Fab Rudies:Music. That is our outlet. When things aren’t going so well we’ll write a song or go and play. Doing this tour it is very difficult. Sixty Days on the road. If it is stressful with the travelling and everything, you can have forty days left and be stressed, but once you step on stage it is all worth it and we all remember what we are here for, which is the positive outlook on it.

popYOUlarity: Has anyone ever tried to stand in your way of all this?
Fab Rudies:You just have to keep at it and follow your dream and not let anyone stop you.

popYOUlarity: If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life and every candy, cough drop and coffee had to be that flavour, what would it be?
Fab Rudies:Chicken! Anything that tastes like bread and pasta!

popYOUlarity: If you could spend one more day with someone from the past, who would it be?
Cassandra: My grandpa, in his wood shop. We would always make fun things in his wood shop. He was a wood worker and cabinet maker. It was the best thing ever.
Tom: I would like to take my Dad to Warped Tour. He has never been.

popYOUlarity: What song is always uplifting to you no matter how down you are?
Cassandra: Bedouin Soundclash. Every time they are in my CD player, it puts you in a good mood.

popYOUlarity: Is there a piece of advice you have received that changed your perspective significantly.
Fab Rudies:If you never give up, you never fail. As long as it is something you like doing, and you keep on doing it, you’re happy. We even have a song called “Keep On Moving,” which is about persistence. We really believe that. Have respect for yourself and others, and don’t ever think that you are better than anyone else because as soon as you get big headed about anything, that is the end of everything.

popYOUlarity: Do you have anything you would like to say to the readers of popYOUlarity?
Fab Rudies:Check us out. Check out our website, and on Myspace! - PopYOUlarity.com

"The FAB Rudies "Warped Interview""

I first met some of the members of The Fab Rudies at the 2010 Van’s Warped Tour pre-party (slash press conference) a month or so before this summer’s tour began. Â Months later, we crossed paths once again at the Warped Tour in Pomona, CA. Check out what they’ve been up to since then and what they have coming up in the future! - PunkWorldViews.com

"A Warped Tour Tale"

As I write this, the latest disc from Paramore is spinning in my computer. Paramore was one of the bands I had hoped to see on this year’s Warped Tour. Other bands on my “want to see” list included As I Lay Dying, Jonzetta, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, New Found Glory, and The Fold, among others.

The band lists for the Vans Warped Tour in recent years had caught my eye. However, the dates closest to me always seemed to creep up so fast that my lack of planning (aka procrastination) took over and the event passed by my neck of the woods without my attendance. This year, I was determined to be present at least one date since four dates were within about a two-hour drive from my house. So I had plenty to choose from.

The planning process began in early July. I decided that my friend who is a DJ on WBER, an alternative station in Rochester, NY was a good companion for the occasion. After all, we first met at a music festival five years ago, and have met up at many other music happenings since. The diversity of both new and up-and-coming bands combined with some older better-known bands fit well with both of our interests in music.

As it turns out, the Barrie, Ontario date in August was my friend’s birthday. So, instead of travelling within two hours of my house, we drove about three hours from his house, and crossed over into another country. Add the five-hour drive to his house, and you might think I am crazy! While the trek was long, it was worth it, even though our crossing the border took longer than expected.

By the time we arrived at the venue, however, we missed many of the bands I had hoped to see. As we walked to the press area, we found some kids with a band schedule, and I soon realized that many of the bands I wanted to see actually played at the same time. I was prepared, however, knowing that there were some sixty-plus bands and eight or so stages. The chances of experiencing every band you want to see slims down as the number of stages increases. Each set is about a half an hour, and with so many stages, the distance between was bound to affect the ability to catch all of the music that is offered as well.

The order of performance changes each day so a schedule is not available until the day of show. This way the bands have a sort of equal ground. Bands are supposed to leave their egos at home. Part of the reason that Warped Tour originated was to provide a low admission price to music fans and to showcase young bands that perhaps people don’t know about.

I had an interview scheduled with The Rocket Summer. Yet due to our delay and the often-crazy schedule for the artists each day, we were unable to sit down with Bryce Avary, who fronts the group and plays the majority of its instruments on studio albums. I must mention that the media coordinators and other people we spoke with had many good things to say about Bryce. I was able to speak with him briefly at his merch tent. Hopefully soon we will be able to sit down with him. That brings another good point about the Warped Tour. Many of the artists are accessible simply by stopping by the merchandise area.

Now on to the music. Yes, we did catch some live music during our stint in Barrie. Firstly, there was a must-see band hailing from Montreal. Your Favorite Enemies was first introduced to my DJ friend via Myspace. He was drawn to the band for their involvement in Amnesty International. YFE also uses their platform to promote Rock N’ Rights, an organization advocating human rights started by members of the band.

Other bands we caught included Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, and Coheed and Cambria. Each with a slightly different sound, but all put on a good set. I did not get as many pictures as I would normally take since dust was prevalent everywhere we went. Regulars to the venue were prepared with masks and bandanas wrapped around their faces.

The highlight of our day was not the music, rather the after party. Somewhere around dinnertime, we stopped by the press area to check in on the activities, and we found a large table with a nice spread of food beginning to form in front of us. Soon I noticed a Mexican theme forming with food and decorations filling in around us. The porta potties were even donned each with pictures of male and female Mexican dancers.

Before heading out to hear more music, we spoke with a member of The Fabulous Rudies, who was standing behind the food table preparing a Mexican feast. Described on their Myspace page as an “eclectic mix of rock, ska, and politically driven reggae and punk rock” and coming from the San Diego music scene, the seven-piece outfit was given the honor of being the 2007 Warped Tour BBQ Band. As the BBQ Band, the group hosted the post-show cookout for the tour’s musicians, organizers, and promoters after each performance day.

Even before the last band closed the night, we strolled over to the backstage press area again to take in the Mexican fiesta. We soon found out that this was a special day. This was not the normal end of the day cookout. This was a special cookout that only occurred a few times each summer. The relaxed affair was highlighted by a six-member reggae influenced rock band from Canada called playing music, lots of food and beverage, and a chance to hang out with the bands and their roadies. And we were there to experience it!

Earlier in the day we met Beth, a media coordinator from Australia now living in England who was just finishing two weeks on the Warped Tour. This was the second year she ran with the tour. My DJ friend appeared a bit jealous, inquiring about how she obtained such a position. In short, it all started with communication with the tour founder. Later, while at the after party, Beth graciously introduced us to Kevin Lyman, draped in a Mexican poncho with a sombrero adorning his head. Kevin is the man behind the longest-tenured multi-act touring festival on the road.

It shocked me at first, I suppose. I mean, shouldn’t he be sitting in some huge tour bus, basking in the glory of the seeming success of his event? No, instead this humble guy is hosting quite a nice gathering of a good majority of bands that had played that day.

Before leaving for the night, we had our fill of some great food, thanks to the cooks from San Diego. My DJ friend got some radio liners for the station. And we met all sorts of people. While we did not take in as much live music as one would expect at such a festival, we could not have planned a better day. However, we did agree that if we decide to go together next year, we would leave earlier in the morning.

"Get to Know "The FAB Rudies""

Over a decade on the scene & just completing their 5th Warped Tour, The Fab Rudies sound is an eclectic blend of styles with a heavy dose of lively, infectious energy reminiscent of the best of 80’s ska but with a modernized, intelligent feel. The Fab Rudies have a new CD EP, HELP ME that they released this past summer of 2010 on Fun1One Records, while on tour. However, the CD was picked up by Tate Music Group (TMG) and is being repackaged with an additional 2 songs to make it a full length CD to be released, December 14th, 2010.

They have often been compared to No Doubt but with a harder edge, and according to the band, the comparison has been both a blessing and a curse. Kevin Lyman, founder and organizer of the Van’s Warped Tour, said that The Fab Rudies are “on the crest of the next wave in alternative music.” And why not? The revamped Fab Rudies possess all the attributes for success with their New Release, their best & heaviest CD yet.

The Fab Rudies are fronted by the teen singing sensation, Kailyn Voris (her fans say Justin Bieber has nothing on her). Kailyn recently signed a contract with Zuri Models & Talent and is featured in many commercials, print ads, etc. Kailyn, as well as The Fab Rudies, will be featured in the movie, Music High, to be filmed this spring of 2011, and to be released by Universal Pictures in theatres in 65 countries. Kailyn is the daughter of founding band member and singer Tom “Tommy2Rude” Voris. The rest of The Fab Rudies current line-up are made up of young seasoned veterans hand-picked by Tom and are sure to delight even the casual listener. Tommy2Rude mans the male lead vocals and provides the experience and political edge behind the group. Lead guitarist and Music Institute current student, Aidan Spencer, can shred with the best of them. Listen to his solo from the new CD on the song, Tears of a Clown. Rhythm guitar duties go to Chris Dobbins. When he’s not playing with the rudies, he’s playing with his other band, San Diego Punk outfit, Best Regret. His brother & Best Regret band-mate, Cody Dobbins, mans the drums. Bass player, Alec Erickson, rounds out the line-up, is from the now defunct classic rock band, Midnight Rose.

The Fab Rudies will be touring most of 2011 which starts with SXSW in Austin, Texas. While on the tour, The Fab Rudies will knock you off your feet and then make ‘em move. It’s real music with teeth. Their sound will HIT you with fist pumping, heart pounding rock; at the same time, get you on the dance floor with a groove that will keep you movin’ all night long. The Fab Rudies are not to be missed. Check them out on their site @ www.thefabrudies.com. Also check them out @ www.myspace.com/punkrockhs. Two of their songs are featured on the Soundtrack for PUNK ROCK HIGH SCHOOL available on iTunes now.

What’s the first thing you would say to someone when they ask you to describe yourself as an artist?

Tom: We are a band that has no restrictions. We like to play live and express ourselves socially, politically, & most of the time just have fun.

How long have you been in the industry?

Tom: The Fab (aka Fabulous) Rudies have been around for 14 years. My daughter, Kailyn, grew up with the band and would come on stage to sing from time to time through the years since she was 7 years old. About 2 years ago after we disbanded, Kailyn and some friends and I started performing together for fun. It was a no-brainer to start up the rudies again with Kailyn as the new face, sound, and head of the band.

Kailyn: Yeah I’ve been performing with my dad as The Fab Rudies a little over a year.

Do you have any projects out now?

Tom: We do. We released our EP, HELP ME, while we were on the Van’s Warped Tour 2010 this past summer. It was picked up by TMG (Tate Music Group/Publishing), and after adding a couple of songs to it, it will be released December 14th, 2010. Our version of Tears of a Clown from our new HELP ME CD, will be the Title Track for the motion picture, Beach Bar: The Movie, due out this summer, 2011. We are recording some new songs for an upcoming movie, Music High, to be filmed before the summer as well.

What inspires your music?

Tom: Real life, good songs, and great artists!

Where are you from?

Tom: The band is from North County San Diego.

Kailyn: I’m an Oceanside girl!

What artists in the industry inspire you the most today?

Kailyn: Hayley Williams of Paramore! Also Gwen of No Doubt.

Tom: Two-Tone Ska, early punk (pre-1983), The Clash, Roots Reggae, Flogging Molly, more I’m sure.

Why is that?

Kailyn: They aren’t afraid of being different. Love their voices!

What makes you different from other artist today?

Kailyn: We don’t have a certain style of music. I just like having fun.

Tom: That’s right. We can fit in with many genres. We don’t like to be pigeonholed.

What do you want your future fans to know about you?

Kailyn: Chase your dreams. I love to dance and have been dancing for 12 years. I hope to be on Broadway someday. - AT (Alwayz Therro) Magazine

"Help Me by The FAB Rudies (CD Review) 4 out of 5 stars"

I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this CD when I listened to it yesterday the official release date. I loved this band when I saw them in Ventura at the Warped Tour in 2007. I ended up getting their CD but it wasn't as good as they were live. When I saw that they had a new line up & new CD I thought I'd check it out. I'm glad to see The Fabulous or Fab Rudies finally got it right. 2 thumbs Up!! - AP (Alternative Press) Magazine

"Students, teacher get together to promote rock bands OCEANSIDE: El Camino music club puts together CD, shows"

OCEANSIDE -- Forget about "High School Musical" -- some students and a teacher at El Camino High School are working on an edgier soundtrack that they say more realistically reflects the high school experience.

For the last six months, about 15 students at the school have met for lunch once a week to talk about rock 'n' roll as part of a new Rock Band Music Club.

What started out as a club to learn more about the industry has blossomed into a musical network that organizes concerts and is creating a compilation CD intended to someday be a soundtrack for a proposed movie titled "Punk Rock High School."

The club "just boosts you up," said Aidan Spencer, a senior at the school who first proposed the group. "Everyone's going to have the spotlight in this club."

Spencer approached teacher Tom Voris last year, asking him to be the club's adviser. Voris seemed a natural for the gig, since he's been in a ska band called The Fabulous Rudies for years.

Voris said he jumped at the opportunity as a way to give the musicians at the school something to do.

"There's really nothing going on," he said, pointing out the limited options minors have for playing music at local clubs. "I wish someone would have done it for me."

Spencer said he was surprised with how quickly everything has come together. A couple of the bands in the club have already gone into a local recording studio to record songs for the soundtrack, which Voris said he expects to release independently in May.

The proposed film, which a friend of his is shopping around, probably won't come out for at least another year, he said. It's expected to be a punk-rock flip side to the "High School Musical" films.

"There's definitely talent here, and it's all coming out," Voris said.

The club plans to raise money for the recording sessions by putting on concerts. The shows are also a way to showcase some of the diverse music coming out of El Camino, Voris said.

Voris asked Bobby Taylor, a senior at the school, to help book concerts.

The club has also brought musicians with wildly varying tastes together, said Taylor, who's also in one of the bands in the club.

"We all work together," Taylor said. "If you look at any other school, you won't find a club like this."

Once the soundtrack comes out, Voris said he hopes to arrange for some of the bands involved to play malls around Southern California. Voris said he expects to sell the CD at Hot Topic stores.

Matthew Berry, a junior in one of the bands, said he is amazed by the opportunities that his band has had because of the club.

"If you were to tell us a year ago that we'd be where we are now, I would have punched you in the face," he said with a laugh.

Song samples and more information are available online at www.myspace.com/punkrockhs.

"The Fabulous Rudies"

On the strength of soCal ska, a handful of socio-political anthems and the liberating vibe of reggae and dub, The Fabulous Rudies offer up a chance to skank into a perpetual circle anchored by the idea that demanding freedom can be just as fun as it is serious.

Notwithstanding a little bit of cheese at the get go, most of the vocals are powered by the soulful croon of Casandra Anderson who admonishes with “Keep on Moving,” then floats her way through Nena’s “99 Luft Ballons.”

To show that this debut album doesn’t take itself too seriously, its humorous tongue-in-cheek centerpiece “Richard Gere” is the album's funniest, easiest to giggle at and skank to if you (still) feel the urge here in the 21st century. Its wit is perfectly positioned after “ Finding Understanding” -- a ska horn filled introspective hunt for life’s bigger meaning -- and before the gospel choir anthem “Free North America,” which borrows from a Nelson Mandela freedom song by the Special A.K.A.

The humor works and The Rudies were wise to toss in a little satirical humor amidst the in-your-face, do-something-about-the-world-now anthems. Their Clash admiration is apparent and inspiring and they do their best to relive the political power of reggae’s roots and combine it with the playfulness of ska to initiate a little bit of world change.

With the final two tracks “How Can You Save The World?” and “How Can You Save The…Dub?” the octet lays back-to-back reggae tunes that clear away the humor and showcase their chops. Smart choice for producer Sebastian Robertson to end the Rudies' first attempt and send the listener off grooving and thinking this 2006 debut album was much longer than just nine tracks.

"The Fab Rudies Come Roaring Back"

Rising like a phoenix from the horizon, The FAB Rudies are back and better than ever with a rejuvenated lineup, a new record, and boatloads of hot shows on their calendar. Landing with enough force to generate a tidal wave capable of sweeping their Oceanside, California home out to sea, this six piece is poised to vault themselves skyward to new heights of popularity and attention. Blending classic two-tone ska with contemporary pop punk and infectious, soulful vocals, The FAB Rudies are picking up steam in a hurry.

With over 14 years under their belts and following an impressive level of success, the original Fabulous Rudies broke up in 2008, only to give way to the fresher, leaner reincarnation greeting music fans today. Founding member and singer Tommy2Rude Voris rebuilt the group with a young, yet experienced lineup, featuring his 15-year-old daughter Kailyn taking the reins on lead vocal duty.

Like a shot of adrenaline to the heart, The FAB Rudies were revitalized, and quickly began penning new songs, landing gigs, and setting up prospective record deals.

By December 2010, the group released Help Me through Tate Music Group, which features eight tracks of thoughtful, catchy songwriting driven by Kailyn's incredible vocal talent. While drawing comparisons to bands such as No Doubt or Paramore, The FAB Rudies continue to carve out their niche amongst pop punk, ska, and alternative music fans.

Following the release of their latest LP, two of the tracks were picked up for the Punk Rock High School soundtrack. The FAB Rudies are already set up to expand further into films during 2011, including Beach Bar, which their version of "Tears of a Clown" has been selected for the title track.
Set for release in 2012, Music High will see the band performing as themselves in addition to contributing music on the soundtrack to be released by Universal. Finally, the group was also the first band to be nominated as Rock Artist of the Year by the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2011 at a recent event.

The whirlwind of music and exposure driven by the release of Help Me, as well as electrifying live performances including perennial appearances on Van's Warped Tour has created a flood of media attention. Alternative Press, Music Connection, Variance Magazine, and Alwayz Therro have all quickly picked up on The FAB Rudies' vibe, as they continue to attract positive attention from coast to coast.

"[The FAB Rudies are] on the crest of the next wave in alternative music," said Kevin Lyman, founder and organizer of Van's Warped Tour.

Bio

Rising like a phoenix from the horizon, The FAB Rudies or aka The FABulous Rudies, are back and better than ever with a rejuvenated lineup, a new record to be released, and a movie inspired by the band & their founder titled - MUSIC HIGH - to be released in 2012 by Universal Pictures in which 8 songs will be featured & performed by the band in the film with songstress Kailyn Voris in a supporting role. Landing with enough force to generate a tidal wave capable of sweeping their Oceanside, California home out to sea, this six piece is poised to vault themselves skyward to new heights of popularity and attention. Blending classic two-tone ska with contemporary pop punk and infectious, soulful vocals, The FABulous Rudies are picking up steam in a hurry.

With over 14 years under their belts and following an impressive level of success, the original Fabulous Rudies broke up in 2008, only to give way to the fresher, leaner reincarnation greeting music fans today. Founding member and singer Tommy2Rude Voris rebuilt the group with a young, yet experienced lineup, featuring his 16-year-old daughter Kailyn taking the reins on lead vocal duty. Like a shot of adrenaline to the heart, The FABulous Rudies were revitalized, and quickly began penning new songs, landing gigs, and setting up prospective record deals.

By December 2010, the group released "Help Me" through Tate Music Group, which features eight tracks of thoughtful, catchy songwriting driven by Kailyn’s incredible vocal talent. While drawing comparisons to bands such as No Doubt or Paramore, The FABulous Rudies continue to carve out their niche amongst pop punk, ska, and alternative music fans.

Following the release of their latest LP, two of the tracks were picked up for the Punk Rock High School soundtrack. The FAB Rudies are already set up to expand further into films during 2012, including Beach Bar, which their version of “Tears of a Clown” has been selected for the title track. Also set for release in 2012, the pre-mentioned Music High will see the band performing as themselves in addition to contributing music on the soundtrack to be released by Universal. Finally, the group was also the first band to be nominated as Rock Artist of the Year by the Los Angeles Music Awards in 2011 at a recent event & World Music Artist of the Year during the summer's San Diego Music Awards.
