"The Story Behind The Song"

The Story Behind The Song

AMAZED

Every so often you hear a story that will cause your heart to swell, bring tears to your eyes, a lump in your throat and a desire to praise God for being the truly awesome, loving, miracle performing God that He is. Hopefully, for you, this is one of those stories.

On May 30, 2008, Kyle Torrence and Becca Branson, were busy preparing for their wedding the next day. The biggest day of their lives. Little did they know just how big it was going to be.
As they were preparing the reception hall with decorations and the multitude of tasks involved, Kyle was lifting a tote of 2 litre soda bottles onto a cart. The cart moved just as he began the motion of setting the heavy tote onto the cart (with wheels). Kyle dropped the heavy tote onto the floor, and when he did, he felt something “pop” in his back. As he slowly moved to the lobby where everyone else was, he began to feel a numbness in his legs, and in seconds he dropped to the floor with no feeling from the waist down.

Kyle was taken to Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis, where he was given a series of tests to check for feeling in the bottom of his feet, legs and waist. There was none. The hospital waisted no time in getting an MRI done. This imaging showed that Kyle had ruptured two discs, L1 and L2, and one was bulging against his spinal chord, causing the paralysis.

The next chain of events is nothing short of a miracle. There just happened to be a surgeon in the hospital at that moment that was a spinal chord injury surgical specialist. After a quick review of the MRI results, the surgeon consulted with Kyles parents and bride to be that his injuries were extremely serious and needed immediate surgery to relieve the pressure against Kyles spine. He had an 8 hour window from the time of the accident to complete this or Kyle could face permanent paralysis.

Kyle was immediately taken into surgery, just one hour and ten minutes from his arrival at the hospital. While it seemed like a very long time, the surgery was approximately two hours. The surgeon came out and shared that Kyle was very healthy and the surgery went well. He indicated that one disc had been obliterated. He compared to “looking like it had received a shotgun blast” as it was very shredded. The other disc bulged against the spinal chord and that is what was causing the paralysis. He then shared the words that left the parents and bride to be very numb. The surgeon stated that they needed to be prepared for one of three possibilities. (1) Kyle will be able to stand the next day, (2) He will need to be in a wheelchair, wearing two bags for approximately 90 days, or (3) Kyle may be bound to a wheelchair, wearing two bags for the rest of his life.

They prayed.

At one o’clock a.m, the nurses came to Kyles room and began their normal routine in a situation like this. Little did they know that God had already started the healing process. Not only did Kyle have feeling back from the waist down, but he was able to stand!

Not only was he able to stand, but by mid-morning he was doing all the exercises, and bodily functions that he needed to do! He did steps, he absorbed the plethora of I.V, with anti-biotics. The young couple, begged and pleaded with the doctors to allow them to go to the church and get married. With reservation, the surgeon gave Kyle a “hall pass” with the stipulation that he had to be back in the hospital by 9:00p.m that night.

The nurses dressed him in his tuxedo, shaved him, combed his hair, and he was taken to the church to be married. He was wheeled down the aisle to meet his bride and one of the most unbelievable weddings of this day and time, took place.

Upon the return to the hospital, the nursing staff moved his room to a larger “honeymoon suite”. Complete with another bed attached to Kyles, decorations, a small wedding cake, flowers, snacks and a sign on the door that said “Honeymoon Suite Do Not Disturb”. The young newlyweds were blessed.

If being able to attend their wedding the next day was not miracle enough, Kyle was released to go home on Sunday.

It was while he was in the hospital, that the words to this song came to him. I think that you can agree, after reading this story, that you too are “Amazed”.

Please listen to the words, and realize just how wonderful God truly is.

The Fallen is a Christian Rock band out of St. Louis that has just released an amazing self-titled album. Kyle Torrence (lead vox/guitar), Drew Keirsey (bass/vox), Jerrick Myers (lead guitar/keys) and Zech Shoults (drums) say that they realized a long time ago that God is something to be shared - not stuck in a box and kept on a shelf. Their music is how they share their Savior and their faith and with lyrics that are as personal as they are passionate and an alt rock sound that delivers a sound that rings true to all age groups, these young men are hitting all of the right notes.

Bio

“The Fallen” is a St. Louis, MO-based indie rock band that has a unique style and sound ranging from powerful, heartfelt ballads to driving, melodic rock with tight and soaring vocals. They are continuing to gain momentum in the secular and Christian music scenes. The producers/engineers with which the band has recorded their self-titled debut album are none other than Bill Whittington and Rob Coates out of Franklin, TN (album release scheduled for July 2010). The band’s current venue list ranges from churches to festivals, benefits, youth conferences, and theme parks that range from 1,000 to 30,000 in attendance. They are also receiving national air play with their new single, “Your Love is Extravagant”—a remix of the song Casting Crowns made famous. The Fallen is really thrilled with the buzz they are creating in the secular and Christian music scenes, and as previously stated, their album was released on July 23, 2010. The band will be touring to promote their new record.
Kyle, Zech, Jerrick, and Drew are continually creating fresh and cutting-edge melodies that are not only driven by searing vocals, crunchy guitars, chest-pounding drums, and greasy bass lines, but are more importantly filled with inspiration and encouragement in a world where people are constantly yearning to be enlightened and given a hope that will refuel them for a life lived to its fullest.

Kyle Torrence (24): "Funny…if you would have asked me when I was 10 years old what I was going to be when I grew up, I would have said I’d play professional baseball. Never in my life would I have imagined that God would be using me the way He is. I would have told anyone else, ‘You're crazy’. It's funny how God brings things into light—into perspective. God brings people together for a greater cause than one's own being. Music has always been a part of me; even in the midst of a tragedy in my own life, I was able to see beauty and hope. I find great peace in what God has in store for me. I am truly amazed."

Zech Shoults (20): "You know how you see all these bands with members from all different places? I always thought it was crazy, and I didn't know how that ever worked out; somehow, I’m now in a band with guys I didn't even know before I was messaged on Facebook. Now that I have stepped back and looked at my life, I see how God’s hand has been with me and has prepared me to do work in His name. He has brought us together—without knowing each other previously before ‘The Fallen’—to glorify Him on and off stage. God put me in this band so I could wake up and strengthen my faith to do His will…and share His love."

Jerrick (JRock) Myers (21): “I've known since I was 12 years old that God had big plans for my life. I never imagined Him using a series of events that at the time seemed like reasons to give up, but were really all a part of His plan to get me to where I am today. It's really cool to start to see the picture in the puzzle, and not just the edges.”

Drew Keirsey (28): “I’ve never been eloquent, so I’ll just stick to the facts. Kyle, Jerrick, Zech, and I are just a bunch of normal guys with normal lives that He has pieced together in order to bring His message to those that haven’t heard it. I don’t know how this is going to ultimately turn out, but I’ll rock the bass frequencies and sing my heart out while He still allows me yet another day to live. I hope we can be used to help you live your life on purpose.”
