"The Fancy - Le groupe à surveiller en 2010"

"Fancy Pop, Tomorrow at the Whistler"

The Fancy is a New York orch-pop quartet led by singer-keyboardist Seth Garrison and singer-guitarist Clara Latham, who also wrote all the songs on the group’s self-titled five-track debut. But Chicagoans might recognize the other half of the band, responsible for the orchestral part of its sound: bassoonist Katherine Young and violist Amy Cimini, both adventurous classical players who established themselves as improvisers and experimenters while living here in the mid-aughts. (Young is also a former Reader employee.) They both play in the forward-looking chamber group Till by Turning, and Young is a member of Anthony Braxton’s Falling River Quartet, alongside trumpeter Taylor Ho Bynum and guitarist Mary Halvorson.
On the EP the band is joined by drummer A. Craig Bray, who gives the hooky tunes some extra oomph, but the band’s elegant melodies would be just as catchy without him. Piano and guitar provide the main propulsion, and the precise, nimble lines of Young and Cimini add real depth and richness. Plus when was the last time you heard a rock band where every song gave prominent roles to bassoon and viola? Even the tunes that sound a bit saccharine and hyperactive for my tastes (in a Ben Folds kind of way) are undeniably well-crafted.

"Roommate + The Fancy"

Bassoonist Katherine Young left Chicago a few years back to study alongside avant-garde heavyweight Anthony Braxton at Wesleyan, joining him in his Falling River Quartet and working in small chamber improv combos like Till by Turning. Tonight, she unveils her latest project, the Fancy, an upbeat NYC four-piece teaming her with TBT bandmate Amy Cimini and the sunny harmonies of Seth Garrison and Clara Latham. Kent Lambert's Roommate follows, veering from electronic pop to quasi-Western soundtrack with disarming ease.

"The Fancy"

For those who've kept the faith in bands with doe-eyed pop instincts and touches of chamber-music instrumentation, New York band The Fancy provides some validation. Pianist Seth Garrison and guitarist Clara Latham's vocals come through as pristine and tender as could be ("If you wanna stay out all night I'll buy you a disco," begins the song "Famous"), trading lines and harmonizing on some rather strong melodies. Instead of cello and violin, The Fancy has a viola and a bassoon, varying the usual chamber-pop arrangement formula a bit. That said, local trio El Valiente has a formula that's a bit more its own—lengthy guitar-rock instrumentals both darkened and lightened with a distinctly Southwestern sense of melody, plus glockenspiel—and even managed to push that a little further with its second album, 2009's Daceton, easily one of the best local releases of last year. - The Onion

Bio

THE FANCY is the creation of the composer/songwriter duo Clara Latham and Seth Garrison. Classically trained musicians with a serious love for popular forms, The Fancy merges chamber music and pop sensibilities with earnest song writing and dramatic flair. With Amy Cimini (Till by Turning, Starring, Christy & Emily) on viola and Katherine Young (Till by Turning, the Nightingales, Anthony Braxton’s Falling River Quartet) on bassoon, The Fancy orchestrates lush tunes so timeless you think you might already know them.

Always focused on the integrity of the sound and honesty of the song, The Fancy is hard to categorize. The band’s diverse influences include devout obsessions with Mariah Carey and Fleetwood Mac, as well as heartfelt admiration for Robert Ashley and Prince.

THE EP recorded at Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn, is available for preview on the band’s press site. With A. Craig Bray appearing as percussionist, mixing engineer and co-arranger, this five-track EP overflows with vocal harmony, full-band counterpoint, thick orchestral textures, and tongue-in-cheek lyricism.

THE VIDEO for the opening track, “Breadwinners,” is available on wearefancy.net, as well as vimeo and youtube. Directed by Ry Russo-Young and shot by Kitao Sakurai, this short film expressively captures The Fancy’s whimsical character.

A new record is currently in progress, and is slated for a release in March 2011, along with an East Coast tour!
