"Band still feeds off Chabot 'battle' win"

HAYWARD — It's been two weeks since the annual "Battle of the Bands," and the first-place Feeders of San Francisco still rake in the compliments on its MySpace.com page.

"You guys won first place for a reason," said one admirer, referring to the band's mix of'60s pop,'70s rock and'90s grunge music.

Twelve Bay Area bands, winnowed down from 27 that auditioned in January, performed Feb. 10 in the 44th "battle," as the annual competition has become known.

The musical showcase attracted more than 1,000 family members, friends and musical fans to the Chabot College Performing Arts Center.

A nine-judge panel of music professionals and enthusiasts gave the Feeders first place.

Billy The Kid, a San Mateo band, placed second for its pop, power pop and pop punk sound.

Peaceable Jones, a Modesto band specializing in rock, punk, metal and grunge, won third place.

Stereo Chromatic, a Bay Area band that plays rock, metal and punk music, received the first "Flairey Award," named after musician Mick Flaire, who has hosted 32 of the 44 battles.

Prizes included musical instruments and free practice and recording studio time.

Proceeds from the battle, hosted by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, support youth music programs in the greater Hayward area.
