Bio

While most songwriters seem to be musicians who work their ways into songwriting, Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs had songs buzzing in her head without ever having touched a guitar.
As an artist studying printmaking in Santa Cruz, Carolyn looked to her friend and multi-instrumentalist Aaron Morgan (who also plays in Roots of Orchis) to help her realize these songs.
After just a few months, the two had christened themselves The Finches, moved to San Francisco, and had already recorded and released their first EP, titled simply "Six Songs".
With just a few shows, their web site, and the help of the undeniable charm of the underground hit 'Daniel's Song', the Finches had already sold 1200 copies of this self-released EP.
Fledgling label Dulc-i-Tone also took a liking to the EP, helping them with distribution and touring, as well as releasing "Six Songs" on vinyl. The band soon after began work on their first full-length album, "Human Like a House."
The album, released in early 2007 by Dulc-i-Tone, was recorded with the help of Morgan's father (who also recorded the EP) and further develops the charming storytelling of the EP. The album is still stripped-down and all acoustic, but unlike the EP, it contains more full instrumentation. A few songs feature drums and bass, and Alyssa from Vetiver adds cello on 'Two Ghosts.'
The album garnered widespread press accolades on both the U.S. and international level, and college radio took quite a shine to "Human" as well, topping many stations' charts and spending multiple weeks on the CMJ Top 200.
In 2007, The Finches have already finished multiple west coast tours, one east coast tour, and they played an astounding six shows in five days at SXSW in Austin. A new EP is set for release in the fall to coincide with a full U.S. tour.
