Bio

The Five Deadly Venoms have earned a reputation at the top of New York City’s vibrant bluegrass scene. The band is built on the virtuosity of award winning pickers and singer/songwriters who have come together to carve a fresh and exciting new vision for bluegrass and new acoustic music.

The Venoms are a national touring act, featuring "standout musicians with two distinctive front men" (Durango Herald). After making the finals in the 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition, they celebrated by embarking on a tour of the southwest. Their 2009 summer schedule opened up new markets in Arizona, California and Colorado where they were met with features in several news outlets and live performances on radio. Later in the tour fiddler Rob Hecht took home one of the biggest honors in bluegrass by winning the 2009 Rockygrass Fiddle Competition.

To capture the immediacy of their live sound, the band called on Nashville heavy-hitters Randy LeRoy and three-time Grammy winner Dave Sinko for mixing and mastering. Their self-titled debut album showcases the talent that surges through this young unit. The ballads of lonesome heartache delicately framed by this master string ensemble reach deep into the history of American Soul and classical chamber repertoire to find sublime new soundscapes for restless fans of traditional music. Instrumental odysseys “Anna” and “Chasing The Chicken” give a view into the depth of compositional vision while tunes like “Sleeping Dragon” and the haunting “This Lonesome Road” show that the band is equally ready to pen hit songs.

With a strong following at home in New York City, they can often be seen performing with prominent guest musicians like Noam Pikelny (Punch Brothers, John Cowan, Leftover Salmon), James Genus (Herbie Hancock), Jeremy Kittle (Turtle Island Quartet), and Jen Larson (Straight Drive, Prarie Home Companion). They often share bills with national acts like Bearfoot at venues like The Living Room and Webster Hall. NYCbluegrass.com calls The Five Deadly Venoms “AWESOME!”

"The debut album...is full of delicately executed musicianship and beautifully written ballads, many of which feel destined to be standards" (Verde Valley News).
