Bio

Bio | The Flats | 2010
A six piece, Ottawa-Chelsea based indie rock band that bridge the gap between folk traditions, raucous live energy, harmonious
melodies and pure aural candy. The Flats began in the fall of 2007 when Greg Brayford, wanted to fill out the sound of the songs he was
writing. He asked two of his good friends, Michael Peterson and Matthew Young, to join on bass and drums respectively. The three had
been band mates in past years in The Belfast Cowboys and more recently in Tilda. In early 2008, an old friend from the Toronto music
scene, Rob Commins, came along to play mandolin, banjo, bass and guitar. Mitch Pariseau (formerly of Hennessey and also a former
Belfast Cowboy) joined the band to add a full guitar soundscape. In the spring of 2008, drummer Steve Jurgutis (formerly of Everender)
joined to play percussion and assorted sounds.
The Flats are hard to pin down. Sounding more UK than USA, The Flats are influenced by everything from 60’s folk sensibility, to 70’s
rock n' roll to more contemporary indie rock. It has been said that attending a Flats show is like standing in the path of a freight train –
melodically building speed an explosive finish – but you can get out of the path. CBC Radio's Bandwidth host Amanda Putz says: " They
remind a little of some of my favourite 90’s bands like the Grapes of Wrath. A colleague mentioned the Beatles when I played her the
Flats. ...it really walks the line between sounding new and sounding retro. It's the Beatles, a little Sloan... "
The Flats offer up compelling tunes brought to life in a rich, engaging and harmony-layered live show. Their energetic, raw dynamic live
show has impressed audiences at Zaphod's, the Black Sheep Inn, the Elmdale Tavern and Irene's and many local festivals.
