"They remind me a little of some of my favourite 90s bands like the Grapes of Wrath"

They remind me a little of some of my favourite 90s bands like the Grapes of Wrath ... it really walks the line between sounding new and sounding retro. It's the Beatles, a little Sloan ... " - CBC Radio's Bandwidth host Amanda Putz

"Between the Beams is a wonderfully diverse album filled with catchy songs"

"Between the Beams is a wonderfully diverse album filled with catchy songs and vocal harmonies the Everly siblings would be proud to claim. If you can see Neil Young playing guitar for Crowded House, The Flats are the band for you." - Dick Altavista of CKCU FM

Bio

The Flats are a five-piece, Ottawa-Chelsea based band formed in the fall of 2007. Their raw and dynamic live shows have dazzled audiences all across Ontario and Quebec at venues such as Zaphod Beeblebrox, The Blacksheep Inn, The Supermarket (presented by AUX), and The Elmdale Tavern. They’ve also had the privilege of participating in Westfest (2011; http://www.westfest.ca/) and the RBC Royal Bank Ottawa Bluesfest (2012; http://ottawabluesfest.ca/). The band's influences range from sixties folk to 70's rock n' roll to more contemporary indie rock such as Blitzen Trapper and Wilco.

The Flats began in the fall of 2007 when Greg Brayford, wanted to fill out the sound of the songs he was writing. He asked two of his former band mates (from the Belfast Cowboys) and good friends Michael Peterson and Matthew Young to join on bass and drums. In early 2008, an old friend from the Toronto music scene, Rob Commins, added mandolin, banjo, bass and guitar to the mix of instruments. Soon after, Mitch Pariseau (formerly of Hennessey and yet another former Belfast Cowboy) joined to add a full guitar sound. Finally, in the spring of 2008, drummer Steve Jurgutis (formerly of Everender) joined to play percussion, provide added back-up vocals and other assorted sounds. In the summer of 2011, Michael Peterson decided to leave the band to work on his solo recordings.

In June of 2010 the band released their first album Between the Beams, which was well received. Of the album, "Between the Beams is a wonderfully diverse album filled with catchy songs and vocal harmonies the Everly siblings would be proud to claim. If you can see Neil Young playing guitar for Crowded House, The Flats are the band for you."Dick Altavista of CKCU FM claimed “Between the Beams is a wonderfully diverse album filled with catchy songs and vocal harmonies the Everly siblings would be proud to claim. In June 2012 The Flats released their EP Tell Me Something Else which was recorded at Little Bullhorn Studios in Ottawa.
