Perfect songs you can hum after one hearing. If The Beatles were an 80's madchester band... If Paul Simon was a broken-hearted rebel.... if Morrisey could sing about the sunshine as wittily as he sings about the rain... If pop was as cool as it can be beautiful... Enter The Fleas

Biography

The Fleas’ songs come from places you don’t see on the telly any more, but can still read about in books.

Piers fronts the band, writing a diverse set for the indy five-piece that stretches from doomy, cinematic bossanovas, to indy folk belters and three minute rock anthems.

Finding the right fleas to lock all the different styles together wasn’t easy. It eventually took a Latin twist from two Argentinians to bring the sound together live. Rico teaches guitar, while Mannie is simply a born drummer and showman. They bring their own heady brew of influences from south of the equator, giving the songs a unifying and unique soundscape.

Completing the lineup are the two ladies in the band, Demi on bass and Bernadette on percussion and glockenspiel. Both add an extra vocal dimension reminiscent of The Magic Numbers.

The result is something familiar, yet unique, a bit like We are Scientists, The La’s, Belle & Sebastian, or even 80's bands like Aztec Camera.

With the lineup nicely locking together after six months of gigs, and a rocking little set winning every room they play in London, it’s an itchy year for The Fleas.

Lyrics

Something or nothing

Written By: Piers Eccleston

Half way,
Up your stairway,
Contradiction,
Looking,
For a soulmate,
I tried the kitchen,
Laughing, the room was your own,
Lost your number before I got home,

And you can run,
And you can hide,
And you can cross yourself and sail out on the tide,
But I can’t wait,
‘Cos we could make,
Something or nothing

Let us be lovers,
Our little secret,
Groovy,
For the movies,
We haven’t seen yet.

And it’s my birthday, so why aren’t you here?
My next one’s not due for a year.

And you can run,
And you can hide,
And you can cross yourself and sail out on the tide,
But I can’t wait,
‘Cos we could make,
Something or nothing

You got me so tell all your friends,
My life’s one big joke that never ends.

And you can run,
And you can hide,
And you can cross yourself and sail out on the tide,
But I can’t wait,
For all we’ll make,
So you’d better run
And you can hide,
And you can cross yourself and sail out on the tide,
But I can’t wait,
For all we’ll make,

We could be ace,
So I rest my case,
For something or nothing

Rain

Written By: Piers Eccleston

Oh it will rain,
It will come down,
It will pour,

And when your daughters
Are all washed away,
It will rain more

This city never sleeps,
And we are all it eats,

And what you call living,
I think of as just passing through,
And who here remains,
From where they once came?
Always been haunted by places of my youth.

And when this city,
Sits pretty under the sea,
Do what you’ve got to do to make do,
But don’t blame me

This city never sleeps,
She only shits and eats,

And what you call living,
I think of as just passing through,
And who here remains,
From where they once came?
Always been haunted by places of my youth.

Portobello Cocaine

Written By: Piers Eccleston

Portobello Cocaine
Kicked in my door again,
And when the cats come out at night, they all talk the same,

On Portobello cocaine,
You always lose what you gain,
And with friends like these, you won’t need enemies again,
They call the white van again,
For Portobello cocaine

Portobellissima,
The number one superstar
You was quite the chi chi thing ‘til they forgot who you are

Portobello coffee,
She never gives it for free
God, since two am I’ve wondered when you’re going to leave,
The tangled webs that you weave,

For Portobello cocaine

And when the cats come out at night, they all talk the same,
For Portobello cocaine

You’re a superstar

Dreadful Blonde

Written By: Piers Eccleston

You’ve been larging it all year,
And you’ve never looked so near,
To a breakdown.

Live by the sword, you’ll cut your nose,
Learn to live with what you chose,
‘Cos she ain’t uptown.

Just be honest for a change,
We both know that she’s deranged,
Yeah, she’s alright, she’s like a mouse,
But she’s always round our house

And I can’t breathe
With her around,
She steals my beans,
And she don’t put things back where they’re found

We all know you buy her gear,
But does she have to come down here,
With all her bad things?

You shag it better after fights,
But sound travels well at night,
And I’m guessing brown wings

Trust me, I’ve been there before,
You’re not the reason or the cure,
And if you want to do her good,
Why don’t you kick her out? Inside you know you should.

‘Cos we can’t breathe
With her around,
She ain’t clean,
And she don’t put things back where they’re found

Just be honest for a change,
We both know that she’s deranged,
Yeah, she’s alright, she’s like a mouse,
But she’s always round our house

And I can’t breathe
With her around,
She’s always on my Playstation,
And she don’t put things back where they’re found

No we can’t breathe,
So I wrote this song,
Don’t be deceived,
‘Cos she’s just another dreadful blonde
Oh, just another dreadful blonde
Yeah just another dreadful blonde
Oh, just another dreadful blonde

Tired of Hanging Around

Written By: Piers Eccleston

You sit around killing time,
And it's killing me,
'Cos I've got action on my mind

You want to talk, you'll talk all night,
While I lose my mind
At your lack of appetite

I've got venom in my veins
And it makes me strong
I heard everything you say
And I say you're wrong

'Cos ll we do is lose good days
And I'm wolfish for the kill,
So what you say?

I'm tired of hanging around,
Just tired of hanging around,
All we do is hang around every day

Don't say it's never been our day
When the sun's in the sky
And you ain't heard a word I said
And I don't know why

Maybe I'm wrong,
Maybe I'm right,
But we'll never know,
Until the day we try

Sitting getting nothing done,
With you on your arse,
You talked so long the cows came home,
And you're still chewing grass

And all we do is lose good days,
And I'm wolfish for the kill,
So what you say?
I'm tired of hanging around,
Aint' ya tired of hanging around,
All we do is hang around every day
