Acoustic twanging and poppy sensibilities are the order of the day when it comes to this Reading-based-five piece. There's certainly a hint of early Stars in here, although they're not quite there in terms of quality just yet. 'Something Or Nothing' is a gentle love-struck affair that wouldn't sound out of place on the Love Actually soundtrack (make of that what you will) and although they dont deviate much from the jingly-jangy indie pop formula on this four track demo, it's a mighty promising start. I think that Sarah Champion of Absolute Radio really summed The Fleas up when she said “This is a bit special. Feel good melodic indie pop rock with wry lyrics. They get a Big thumbs up from me – and they did from the listeners too!”

Welcome to this introduction to The Fleas. Formed in 2008 by frontman and songwriter Piers Eccleston, the group has spent the past few years gigging around London and other parts of the UK. The band have received a very warm welcome by UK radio, whose reaction is best summed up by Ed Pickett on Kick 106FM who said “The band is called The Fleas. Live they are amazing. On record, they’re fantastic as, but once you have seen them live, you’re going to love them forever.”

The Fleas deliver an irresistibly hook-laden set with songs that simply demand to be heard not once but many more times! You can forget genres, The Fleas mash together old Radio 2 influences with 80’s indie styles to serve up tunes that sound both familiar and original at the same time.

The band’s breath taking sound owes much to quality of its members. In reviewing the band for the online music review site TrakMARX, Debbi Hurry commented that “Piers has a beautiful voice, plain and simple, fractured and fragile and framed so well”. Latin drummer Mannie Mazzeo grew up in Argentina, finishing a tour of Australia and New Zealand he joined the band on drums and backing vocals. Unusually for a drummer, he doesn’t hit the drums hard but works the drums to become a voice in the songs in their own right. Underpinning this are the vibes of the guitars and it is here that we meet Rico Pieroni, who is another Argentinian and who brings the skills of being able to flip the songs from a level of intimacy and heartbreak to something that sounds like a building falling down.

Patrick Austin, the band's bass guitarist is a Finnish singer. He was the lead singer of Punaiset Messiaat until he left the band to move to London in 1997 and then was the lead singer and guitarist for the pop rock band Dolchamar.

Finally, on percussion, Bernadette adds the cream topping to the band with her backing vocals that give the band their distinctive three-part vocal harmony that’s unmistakably The Fleas.

The Fleas have played a number of festivals, including Hamswell, Stanstead Abbott, Uplands, and before 2,000 people at a race day in Devon. They have played a set at In the City in Manchester and recorded sessions at the BBC for 6Music’s Linda Serck, and Reading University’s Junction 11 radio.

The commercial value of their music can be seen with some of their songs already being licenced to a PlayStation gaming company.

Whatever way you look at it, The Fleas are a bug, and once you are bitten there is no antidote apart from listening to more of their great music!
