"Weekend Event to See"

Going on 10 years now, Nevada rockers Flesh Hammers have been playing some raunchy rock & roll and having a good time doing it. They play to the lowest common denominator, but do it with style and flare, like '70s drag queen icon Divine. Lead singer Blackie Crabtree grew up in LA, and used to play the Whiskey and the Troubadour, now his band plays like a campy version of the pristine LA hard rock scene, much like if someone hired Roger Corman to produce the next Batman blockbuster. The elements are all the same, but style is everything.

"In the Key of Fall - Local Stories"

Reno band The Flesh Hammers draws on even older rock ’n’ roll traditions: leather-and-spikes punk, Cramps-style rockabilly, and ’60s style garage rock. On the band’s new, third album, Bullseye, the B-movie inspired song titles give a strong indication of what they’re about: “Monster Maker,” “The Devil Wears Wingtips” and “Woman in Prison.” There’s some classic CBGB’s era sounds. Derek Olijar’s guitar leads often sound like they come straight from the Stooges’ Raw Power or an early Dead Boys record. Rhythm guitarist Pamela Lee Campbell and bassis Blackie Crabtree both sing, telling tales of shooting guns and partying at Motel Six. The album artwork fills in some of the gaps of the story: the band members, dressed in black, holding guns, fresh from target practice in what is unmistakably the Nevada desert. This is music that comes from the place where we all live.

"String Theory"

“Since it’s impossible to know what it means when a band is referred to as “punk"—the term now being applied to pop idols like Good Charlotte—it might be better to say that the Flesh Hammers play guitar-heavy rock that is direct, loud and (usually) fast. They are a band in the tradition of ‘70s groups like the Stooges and the Dead Boys. In other words, this is not your daughter’s punk rock.”
