"One of 2007's most adventurous and finest debuts"
THE GUARDIAN 4/5

“Opiated astro-soul … hypnotic...” 4 Stars
Uncut 4/5

"Captivating"
THE INDEPENDENT 4/5

"Like The Velvets on a David Lynch set"
NME 7/10

“ (The Flies) delivered an arresting, sexually charged debut embalmed with exotic rhythms and hypnotic riffs”
FHM 5/5

“Something Special … Portishead are back in 2008 and they are going to have to go some to top this …”
The Word

“As albums become more and more scarce, it is reassuring to hear such a daringly creative LP as this … … All Too Human is brazenly sexual and painfully beautiful in equal measure. “
BBC Music

"In a world of Kaiser Chiefs, James Blunts and Hard Fi's, The Flies have injected a breath of fresh air into music...the best UK debut album of the year."
XFM

"Dark, arresting, exotic, sexual and apprehensive all at once, it’s a stunning debut and one that will appeal to those old enough to know better but still too young to care."
GIGWISE 4/5

"Whatever situation you are in, be it between the sheets or two sheets to the wind, this LP will appropriately haunt you from the first listen."
GLASSWERK.CO.UK 5/5

‘An album that should definitely be one of 2007's highlights.’
Room Thirteen

“ …same atmospheric, experimental approach to rock 'n' roll invented by the Velvet Underground, Walking On The Sand is a brooding slab of '60 psychedelic desert rawk … Makes The Jesus & Mary Chain sound like Black Lace!
MSN

‘serves appropriate notice of an act that look set to become one of the year’s biggest breakthrough performers.’
Indie London

‘Like John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band sellotaped to Eddie Cochran’
Frank Sidebottom

"I can honestly say there is nothing else quite like this out there in our cosmos, its incredible originality is only matched by its mesmerising allure and polished perfection.Whether smoking yourself horizontal or vertical and rising, whether entering or about to be entered, this is the album to do it to."
ENTERTAINMENTFOCUS.COM

"The Flies sound is what the music industry has desperately been begging for since the uprise of soft indie music, which produced an overflow of copycat substandard groups. We are still in the hangover era of The Libertines, so it’s about time that someone shook things up a bit. Thank God someone has had the balls to do it!"

"If talent alone decided the music chart positions, then The Flies would easily hold the record for being top of the charts for the longest time" WELIKECLUBBING.COM

"Sounds like one of the classics that should have been in everyone's collection for the past thirty years...[The Flies] come across as a gloriously spaced out version of The Doors." SUBBACULTCHA

THE FLIES
BIOGRAPHY July 2007

What A Long, Strange Trip It’s Been….

Ever wonder what Sly Stone would sound like if The Shangri-La’s were his backing band and John Barry was mixing the sound ? Wonder no more. The first truly great hypno-rock album of the decade has arrived. It’s by The Flies and, like all things of great quality, it comes with an impressive pedigree. Here’s their singer, Sean Cook:

“I’ve spent my entire adult life playing music. Because of that, I’ve explored a lot of avenues and reached a point where I don’t want to release anything until I think it’s staggeringly good. It’s taken four years to get the band to this stage and I’m convinced it’s the best music I’ve ever made.”

Those who have been tuned to rock’n’roll for the last decade will be aware that Sean has passed this way before. As bassist with Spiritualized, for ten years he provided the Sat Nav for all of Jason Pierce’s sonic explorations until a nasty fall-out around the release of ‘Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space’ saw the two part in acrimonious circumstances (they haven’t spoken since). Dusting himself down, Sean promptly formed Lupine Howl. Looking back, their slow-burning jams and searing blasts of motor-neuron rock noise sound like catharsis.

“I had to get something out of my system with Lupine Howl” agrees Sean.
“It was a case of me throwing everything I had into it, partly as a reaction to what had happened and partly because I didn’t know what else to do. I was writing a lot of the music and all of the lyrics, playing bass and singing a different melody at the same time. As anyone who’s done it will tell you, that isn’t easy.”

If four years of full-tilt touring saw Sean firmly strapped into first class on the Oblivion Express, the band also managed to release two fire’n’brimstone albums -“The Carniverous Lunar Activities Of…” and “The Bar At the End Of the World” which remain ideal signposts for anyone seeking the black-hearted spirit of rock. Not that anyone noticed at the time.

“It was frustrating, because people were continually saying to us, “ this sort of music is totally out of date” laughs Sean.
“Then a couple of years later BRMC come along talking about The Stooges and the MC5 and suddenly everyone starts saying that Lupine Howl were the pioneers for this new wave of bands. Towards the end, however, I realised something had to give. Mike Mooney’s girlfriend had a kid and he moved back to Liverpool, and despite being proud of what we had done together, there was a sense that I needed to do something different…”
