Bio

The Flying Chillis are dynamic DJ duo Alex Stewart and Jamie Renton, who between them have been responsible for some of London’s most memorable global music party sessions of the past few years: Alex with his groundbreaking Flying Carpet nights, Jamie with the movable feast that is the Chilli Fried session.

Growing up in Yorkshire and London respectively, Alex and Jamie took similar routes to discovering worldly sounds: punk to reggae to African to the four corners of the world (and beyond). Alex is an internationally respected artist, Jamie a journalist who contributes regularly to fRoots and Straight No Chaser (and has also written for The Guardian, The Independent, Songlines, The Encyclopaedia of Popular Music and numerous other publications), but ask either what their real love in life is and both will answer Djing!

Alex started out playing tunes at friends parties and at openings of exhibitions of his paintings, Jamie caught the bug while researching an article on world music DJs for fRoots. Between them they’ve Djed at WOMAD Sri Lanka, BBC Awards for World Music Afterparties and a whole host of London’s hipper clubs, including Cargo, Momos and Dingwalls. As well as maintaining their regular commitments: The Flying Carpet at the Cross Kings Bar in Kings Cross, Chilli Fried at Clerkenwell’s Darbucka World Music Bar and Brixton’s Ritzy Café. Together, as the Flying Chillis, they’ve taken up a popular residency at Notting Hill’s Mau Mau Bar and rocked the crowd with a late night set at last year’s Whitby Musicport Festival (resulting in an immediate re-booking for this year’s event).

What do they play? Party music from the furthest reaches of here, there and everywhere: from Africa to Latin America, Balkans to Bhangra, the Middle East to the Caribbean … music you didn’t know you loved until you started dancing to it, from the deepest roots to the hottest remixes and mash-ups, anything goes as long as it’s blessed with passion, soul and a floor filling rhythm. Increasingly their sets are spiced up with Alex’s own remixes (under the name of The Flying Coyote Brothers with friend and composer Peter Coyte).
