"Piedmont Jazz Festival: Jazz and Friends on a Sunny Sunday in the Park"

"The Fly Right Sisters led the audience through a history of vocal swing music with tight harmonies and delightful lyrics. They were, in their way, the boldest act of the Festival. They relied upon nothing but their three voices to create the harmony, timing and swing that is essential to a jazz set. They succeeded beautifully." - The Piedmont Post

Bio

We are proud to be named after Nat King Cole's "Straighten Up and Fly Right," a song which not only has a toe-tapping rhytmn, but the lyrics are an appeal for mutal respect and tolerance. Our original arrangements, along with contemporary cultural references make these old tunes resonate with audiences today.

Our three band members, Bonnie, Rachel and Kathleen, met while singing with various choral groups in the East Bay. We discovered a common love of swing era close harmony. From our first rehearsal, it was the perfect fit of vocal range, tone and passion.

Our current repertoire is influenced by the masters of the jazz era, such as Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, Ella Fitzgerald, The Boswell Sisters, The Andrews Sisters, The Four Vagabonds, Glenn Miller and many more. Each performance includes standards such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, Hold Tight, Choo Choo Ch’Boogie, In The Mood, Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen, and It Don't Mean A Thing, along with little known gems such as Rosie the Riveter, T’Ain’t A Fit Night Out and Sister Kate.

The Fly Right Sisters perform at a variety of venues, including The Webster Street Jam, Ghirardelli Square, The Homefront Festival aboard the SS Red Oak Victory, The Gough Street Theater, Julie's Coffee and Tea Garden, High Street Station, The First Street Cafe, Le Bateau Ivre, Rossmoor Retirement Community, The Golden Chordsmen’s Spring Show, Recapture vintage clothing store, Yellow Wood Café, the St. Robert’s Festival, L’Amyx Tea Bar, community fundraising events and private functions.
