Bio
The free Mansons are a freak-folk band based out of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Influenced heavily by the culture and psychedelic sounds of the 1960s, their sound is often characterized by a lo-fi approach to production, and a minimalist approach to song composition.
Song writer Francisco Lopes is concerned with mysticism and the natural world, regularly utilizing allegory and repetition in an attempt to cast a spell over the listener. Many songs contain lyrical content referencing literary works, such as Thoreaus Walden and Carlos Castanedas tales of power. Other song themes blend together mythology, obscure current events and personal experiences. Their albums, self recorded, tend to be thematic in nature, composed of short songs often presented in between various field recordings, sound collages and tape experiments.
A founding member of Halifaxs radiator collective, the free Mansons often feature other members of the collective in their live performances and recordings. The bands interest in cults, made apparent by the bands name, and its practice of magic are well documented.
The free Mansons have several upcoming releases including; Time travel: a split with Chief Thundercloud, containing songs the artists recorded outdoors on a battery powered tape recorder, documenting their separate travel adventures though North and South America.
Le Moonade: a concept album concerned with sleep and dream.
Currently the band is recording an untitled fuzz-folk album.
