"Big Takeover EP review"

"There's no clue anywhere on this Portland band's debut five-songer that they take much interest in today's musical styles. Every retrograde tune sounds like it was recorded pre-1975. The catchy, 60's-era garage of Carrie Anne (not the Hollies hit) and the Kinks-like whimsy of Bye, Bye fit. And the middle sections more methodical, blues-rock influenced groove will have you digging out your old Iron Butterfly, Blue Cheer and Vanilla Fudge records. Despite their moniker, nothing really rocks too hard or loudly — instead, the band opts for more mannered and deliberate rhythmic beats that emphasize nuance and texture. Overall, the EP comes off as a pleasant and pays homage to their bygone heroes"

"Portland Mercury Article"

"2006 was many things to many people. It was the year of the Avatar, the year of online video, the year that B. Spears gave the heave-ho to both K-Fed and underwear, the year the Godfather of Soul passed away. But 2007 will stand resolutely as the year the Friends of Rock ‘n’ Roll broke through with their sunny, easy-going Kinks-ish grab bag of pop, country, and rock nuggets. The local trio has everything going for it: a creaky orange van, arty concert flyers, a ’70s vibe that is reflected in their long, lanky hair and vintage corduroys, simple songs about chasing girls, and a sidesplitting profile on MySpace that deftly parodies the very notion of a band biography. To be sure, these dudes are strip mining the past for creative inspiration and stylistic cues, but they’re still savvy enough to reinvent themselves as self-contained rock stars in the process"

"Zero Magazine EP review"

This five song EP from the band The Friends of Rock-N-Roll is a delightful retro sampler. The first track sounds like a mid 60's catchy flashback that goes by a Hollies song of the same name, "Carrie Anne" It has a catchy melody that makes you want to shake a tambourine to your ass. Second track "Sandra" starts off with vocals of Bob Dylan nasal proportions. "I Wanna Get Dirty With You" is a sexy soulful song full of lyrics of doing nasty things in early 60's Phil Spector girl group style. "Poortland, Organ" despite the kindergarten spelling, features a bluesy harmonica paying homeage to their home city. Last track "Bye, Bye"? has clever keyboard bits that has a sing-a-long feel to it. This band is as fitting as their lyrics to "Carrie Anne": "everything she does is wonderful! What a gem!" - Zero Magazine
