The Fringes

The Fringes

BandRock

A high energy mix of classic rock, blues, and dirty garage funk peppered with heartfelt, thoughtful, and provocative lyrics. From wall shaking rockers to moody, honey drenched ballads - The Fringes defy genre while pleasing a wide variety of musical tastes.

Biography

The most vibrant, subversive and exciting aspect of any culture exists not in the main stream – but on The Fringes of society. This is a mantra we as a band celebrate!

We are two sets of childhood friends -- all Southern California natives. Hailing from Pasadena -- Matt Case (lead guitar) and Paul Allen (Drums) have been playing together since diapers. From the beaches of Laguna -- Ben Nurick (Vox, Guitar) and Alison Hale (Bass) have been jamming together since high school jazz band (they were both saxophone players and have been known to bust it out on the horn funk tip when the itch needs scratchin’).

The Fringes share a love of great blues influenced classic rock (Hendrix, Zepplin, Stooges) and dirtier takes on the model (The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs, MORHINE) as well as Jazz, Funk, and Reggae. As with anyone not preoccupied with trying to fit in we don’t feel the need to commit to a specific genre. Just following our musical passions.

In October of 2008 we finished our first self-produced record “The Fringes” consiting of 8 tracks. The song “Christine” was licensed in the summer of 2009 in the Feature Film “Waiting For Forever” starring Rachel Bilson, Tom Stuttridge, Blyth Danner, Jamie King, and Richard Jenkins.

The Fringes are currently back in the studio -- this time with the expertise of grammy award winning producer Ton Biller (TBIller) who’s recent credits include the soundtrack of “Where the Wild Things Are” with Karen O as well as numerous projects with mega composer Jon Brion. The album will be released in February of 2010. Touring will follow.

Lyrics

Harsh Weather

Written By: Ben Nurick

You’ve got designs on us woman
Ideas about love
Designs on our future
Up to heaven above
But I hate to be the bearer
Of bad news

Harsh Weather
Keeps rolling in
Cold feet
On the cold linoleum
Cold hands
On your skin
Is it telling?
Maybe
When you wriggle away
From my touch
Impulses take over
Right now
Because I need you so much

I hate to be the bearer of bad news
When it comes to unlucky
The markets cornered on you boo
I hate to be a messenger
Of bad times
With so many troubles lately
Dizzy running around
Making us crazy
If it’s all uncertain
We’ve got nothing to lose

In this clever world
You’ve gone and left yourself
Out in the rain
Screaming out loud to no one
Why this life
Is just constant disdain
How it’s cold
It’s dark
And it’s lonely
And you’re screaming out
For two arms to hold you
But it’s sad
It’s not cute
Like a dirty taboo
Of a man and a woman
Oh hold me

I hate to be the bearer of bad news
When it comes to unlucky
The markets cornered on you boo
I hate to be a messenger
Of bad times
With so many troubles lately
Dizzy running around
Making us crazy
If it’s all uncertain
We’ve got nothing to lose

Dangerous gravity
Pushing us closer together
Farther apart
Like the tectonic shifting
So cool in it’s scope
So grand in it’s cause

I hate to be the bearer of bad news
With so many troubles lately
Dizzy running around
Making us crazy
If it’s all uncertain
We’ve got nothing to lose

Jacuzzi Love Party

Written By: Ben Nurick

She knew what she was doing
Dripping wet out of the pool
Like the golden goddess
From my favorite 80’s movie
I said listen up here cutie
Come and sit next to me

We can drown our sorrows
Until they’re drunk with silky sex
I need you right now woman
Come and sit down on my chest

Jacuzzi Love Party
Come and play with me babe.

We could get lost here
In hot water lady
And feel like quicksand sinking in
To hot water
Feel it bubble up.

Intoxicating love and liquor
As the screams of pleasure echo
Through the midnight sky
Inspiring the heavens
To save us from the dangers
Of our actions risky

Turn it out all night
Until we’re drunk with sticky sex
Holding you so close woman
Come and sit down on my jet.

Jacuzzi Love Party
Holiday with me babe

We could get stuck here
In hot water lady
And like quicksand sinking under
The hot water
Save you
Save you
Save me.

Jacuzzi Love

1973

Written By: Ben Nurick

What more can I say?
Or do?
I did all the things
That they asked me to
Changed up my clothes
All of my game
I wanted it to change
But it stayed the same
Oh please
Not another throwback to 1973 again
I can’t get retro out of my head

Try to do it all over
The first time wasn’t so fun
Why do the sins of our fathers
Get carried out
Upon their sons
So soon forgotten
By everyone

It makes me want to get a time machine
Point it straight into the past
People seemed much cooler
When life didn’t move so fast
Man, have you forgotten
They were plagued with troubles too
We keep recycling the action
We can’t do anything new

If we’re trapped in an endless vortex
And time is woven around
Then you can try to run away from it
But you’re just a slave to that sound
Like a card house tumbles
Through shards of broken glass
If history teaches us nothing
I should have ditched that class

The Spot

Written By: Ben Nurick

No one was looking
So we slipped in the middle
Past all the jokers
Outside keeping it real
Now we’ve got reason
To get excited
We’re all up in the private party
And we’re not even invited

Party crashing on the scene now
Like the world’s at our fingers
We’re going to shake it like we mean it
We belong
So give me more more more

We spent all night looking for the spot
And we’re not giving up
Until we get in together
VIP’s don’t wait in line
If your going to front then you better look fine
In your very best leather.
Yeah now we’ve got reason
To get excited
All up in the private party baby
And we’re not even invited

Party crashing on the scene now
Like the world’s at our fingers
We’re going to shake it like we mean it
We belong
So hit it hard hard hard

Thanksgiving

Written By: Ben Nurick

More than you bargained for
Good luck
Settling up that score
Looking for change
In the minimum age

It’s so hard to figure out
Your dirty words all laced with doubt
And no amount
Of scream and shout
Can take away this pain

If it was all a big mistake
Then you wanted it that way
And it seems we’re not going to make it
Until next Thanksgiving

We won’t sacrifice our minds
Over phases of our times
And stay two hearts
Intertwined
But never compromise
What we had
In the beginning

It took a while
To sink in
With bad advice
From tonic and gin
And prophets that false propose
Your shining bird of youth

So go ahead and fly away
While you’re still young
And fresh
Today
And find yourself someone else
Who loves you like I do

If it was all a big mistake
Then you wanted it that way
And it seems we’re not going to make it
Until next Thanksgiving

We won’t sacrifice our minds
Over superficial lines
Drawn in the sand
Because there’s some things that can’t
Be compromised
Like what we found
In the beginning

And I will be fine
But not as fine as I was
In the beginning
