The Fryday Band
Greenlight

There is little doubt that the Dave Mathews Band planted a very large seed when they became a buzz-worthy band on the radio and MTV alike. The music industry embraced this refreshing and undressed sound, and nurtured the emerging bands of the same ilk as other bands have followed suit. Most of these bands have faded away, but there are still some that simmer under the surface, who expound on the foundation that DMB laid so many moons ago. One such band is The Fryday Band, whose music evokes the very essence of carefree weekends and sunny afternoons. The Fryday Band champions laid back, easy going, college rock complete with violin and a unique approach to song writing that defines their sound.

The Fryday Band’s newest release Greenlight is a proclamation of their heartfelt, suburban hymns. Jamie Varley’s cashmere and cigarette vocals add an element of comforting country twang to the Fryday Band’s rock jams. These guys also know the value of having a well-arranged song, as well as memorable lyrics. The band’s individual instruments blend seamlessly to create a creamy blend of genres and emotion that is immediately likable and soothing to the ears. This is a great release for the soft-hearted, wistful eyed music fans that need an alternative to the overly glossed pop and overly aggressive rock that has become popular in recent times. With their debut release, The Fryday band has laid a very fertile foundation for a blossoming and promising future.

"Rocky Mountain Vibe"

Friday, November 11, 2005

Although many bands do musical gymnastics to avoid the verse-chorus-verse approach to songwriting, The Fryday Band recognizes the value of the classic formula.

Their original songs are based on the tried-and-true technique that leads to simple phrasing and simple songs.

One of the few covers they perform, "Country Roads" by John Denver, is a perfect example of a song that works. People remember it. It creates a storyboard image in the mind of the listener and they sing along.

When The Fryday Band frontman Jamie Varley looks for inspiration, he turns to songwriters such as Denver or Neil Young.

His songs are nostalgic takes on growing up, falling in love and learning about life.

"I try to put a story or a moral behind every song," Varley said. "One song will be about falling in love on the first date, while others are a little deeper. You don't see the actual scene behind the tune. You have to listen to the song a few times to get it."

The San Diego-based band's approach to song construction may be classic, but their stage presence is something completely different -- think The Beatles' songwriting with a Spearhead vibe.

Varley has an energetic performance style of running around the stage and encouraging the audience to have a good time.

"Our live shows are a lot of fun," Varley said. "We try to connect with the crowd. We try to get people dancing, and we like to laugh."

This weekend's show will be The Fryday Band's first time in Steamboat Springs. The band is passing through as part of its Rocky Mountain High Tour of Colorado.

Bio

The Fryday Band is a high-energy acoustic rock group based in San Diego, who is creating a groundswell of fan support and a growing nationwide reputation for their exciting original music. The release of their debut Greenlight will keep the excitement growing!

With a rare combination of talent, unbridled energy and great fun, TFB creates music that connects with everyone who listens. The original lyrics touch its listeners on a personal level, and the music brings them to their feet. The bands’ infectious spirit and energy keep everyone clamoring for more.

Like all bands, TFB has many musical influences. However, this fivesome has found a way to synthesize its influences without sounding like any other band. Make no mistake –– drawing on influences as divergent as Dire Straits, Bruce Hornsby, Dave Matthews, Moody Blues, Jean-Luc Ponty, and Martin Sexton –– The Fryday Band weaves a sonic tapestry that is completely its own.

Jamie Varley’s distinctive stage presence and vocals give life to the band’s lyrics, most of which he writes. Keyboardist Jeremy Miller provides the orchestration of the tunes while Dane Scott brings his virtuosity of the electric guitar to the mix. These two instruments furnish the music with its unique sound and fervent solos. Brendan McCasky’s unmistakable groove on bass guitar and Troy Harrell’s rock solid beats on the drums sets the rhythmic foundation and has proven to get people on their feet.
