Biography

With backgrounds in both classical and contemporary training The General Electro Company bring an eclectic blend of electronica, dance, hip/trip hop, roots and drum n' bass to send its listeners on what has been described as "an unparalleled aural odyssey".

Brought up in New Zealand, a far cry away from the world electronic and hip hop centers, The General Electro Company had its influences come from a variety of genres and sub genres, some completely peculiar to New Zealand and the greater Pacific Rim. Through artists and groups such as Salmonella Dub, The Black Seeds, Katchafire, P Money, Supergroove and Concord Dawn New Zealand alternative, hip hop and electronic music was able to develope and emerge with its own unique sounds and styles of dub, d n' b, hip hop/funk and aotearoa roots. These values, ideals and sounds are what inspired The Company to produce their own brand of aotearoa music, incorporating all the above genres and then some in a bid to keep advancing and progressing not only New Zealand an Pacific musics, but also that of world instrumental electronica/hip hop.

Lyrics

This Is Hip Hop

Written By: James Nicol

(Rapped)
Now I ain't never gonna say hip hop can't save a life
God knows how many people it gets through their strife
And $100 million sales each god damn year
From east coast to west ain't no-one can't hear
From the kids playin' ball in the lot out the back
To the hommie doin' life struck out for sellin' crack
To the G in the club, his girl blonde and thin
Sayin' “Bitch, get me that Heineken”.

(Sung)
In this life, this is hip hop
This is hip hop
In this life, this is hip hop
This is hip hop.

(Rapped)
But how many eyes does a man need to have to see
Hip hop got sold back in ’93
Chuck D, Eazy E yeah they kept it real
But now it’s Flavor of Love and that Nike deal
And how many ears does a man need to have hear
The Glocks crack and the screams of fear
‘Cause it ain’t just South Central, it’s global shit
Gangsta trippin’, and you gone created it.
‘Cause hip hop is the life that you put on show
Hip hop is the money and the hoes and clothes
Hip hop is the shoutin’ “Fuck the 5-0!”
Hip hop is the life down at the ghetto.
Hip hop is the mother that gone lost her son
Hip hop is the man that gone fired the gun
Hip hop is the fact that there’s nothin’ done
Hip hop is life. Beyond that there’s none.

(Sung)
In this life, this is hip hop
This is hip hop
In this life, this is hip hop
This is hip hop.

(Rapped)
It takes a nation of millions to hold you back
But now you a pimp? Man, you got pimped right back
And all the world’s ills are on 24 inch wheels
‘Cause kids listen to you man, yeah they think it’s real
But just listen to Skillz, ‘cause what he’s sayin’ is true
Half of you don’t know what the fuck these kids go through
I know I don’t, but at least I’m taking a stand
While you sit there countin’ all the rings on your hand
And I know it what you gotta live
But when you build your empire on this, man you gotta give
‘Cause that revolution will happen between those thighs
Uh huh it got banned so they sell in disguise
That lollipop
From your candy shop
And you wonder for what
All those young girls get knocked up.

(Sung)
‘Cause in this life this is hip hop
This is hip hop
In this life this is hip hop
This is hip hop [Repeat to fade]
