Bio
Historically significant, the band accurately represents the authentic sound and feel of the first jug bands from the turn of the century, the medium which influenced the styles and development of many players and contributed enormously to the evolution of jazz and blues. This trio is based in Langley, British Columbia, Canada, which is just outside of Vancouver.
Other than his 1931 Gibson banjo, 1928 Ludwig banjo and 1939 arch top Gibson tenor guitar, all the outrageous instruments were designed and built by band leader Doug Fraser.
“The Jazz Show” conjures the era of prohibition, speakeasies and bathtub gin. This is 1930’s jazz with a few original songs that blend perfectly. The banter between songs is witty and entertaining.
Performance material ranges from 1840 to 1940, concentrating primarily on 1920’s and 30’s jazz but can includes swing, Chicago blues and Delta blues. Performed at festivals and amusement parks such as Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain, this music is rated: full family, and will entertain all ages.
The Genuine Jug Band truly stands alone as the most interesting and original production available today. This show, both unusual and unique, fascinates and mesmerizes audiences of all ages. Band leader, Doug Fraser, musicologist, songwriter, entertainer and comedian takes the audience on an unforgettable romp through classic songs that can only be described as “the most loved” and “the absolute craziest!” Tony McBride, the show’s percussionist steals their attention constantly with the most outrageous visual performance seen anywhere. Terry Devine, who has played the jug for forty years, astounds the audience with the tuba-like sounds. This is like seeing part of a real vaudeville show, only one that makes you want to dance. The Genuine Jug Band with their “Big Sound” brings energy and life to the large concert stage or the intimate night club performance.
*Additionally it should be noted that available is a lecture/performance show where the band talks about the evolution of music and show business from 1840 to 1940 and Canada’s involvement and contribution in that evolution. A workshop is also available.
