Bio

The George Kypreos Band is led by the virtuoso bouzouki and distinctively soulful voice of George Kypreos, and driven by the strong rhythmic grooves of Gypsy guitar, Syrian darbouka and a rocking English back-line.

The band compose and arrange their own songs, all of which are strongly influenced and inspired by Greek traditional (Laiko), Gypsy (Yiftiko) and island music (NisYotiko), but also by the band's diverse cultural and musical backgrounds, including more modern aspects which are sensitively integrated into their electric-acoustic sound.

George Kypreos – whose family come from the Greek Island of Kalymnos –was born and grew up in England. After discovering the bouzouki aged eight, he studied at the Athens School of Music and then honed his playing technique under the tuition of Maestro Petros Kalodoukas on Kalymnos. George has played with Andipas, Hadzithakina, Demis Roussos and has more recently composed and toured with the Max Pashm Band. George’s solo release Erotevmeni is on the CD The Beginners Guide to Greece, and his Horepsame Poli Psila is on the Athens Bar compilation.

The George Kypreos Band formed in 2008, taking up a monthly residency at the Brighton (UK) Taxim night. They now host the south-east of England's only live monthly Hellenic Night. Their début album is due for release later this year, and their latest track Thello Thello has already received airplay on Greek FM.
