Album is the first real, serious full length musical release from from that enigmatic group known as Glassfingers, which is masterminded by none other than the preeminent Jesse Gertz himself. The music is electronic, but Gertz makes sure to never bore you with over simplified rhythmics, or worn out beats instead he weaves a beautiful tapestry of electronic and organic sounds which washes over the listener as though Gertz himself were giving you a sponge bath. Glassfingers is a relatively recent incarnation of Gertz's prolific musical career, he has many more rougher self released EPs and albums which range from indie pop to acoustic songwriting. Glassfingers is playing The SPACE Gallery in Portland, ME on March 11th with local electronica wizard Computer at Sea as well as the illustrious Dan Deacon who apparently hand picked Glassfingers as the opener. If you’re going to the Dan Deacon show tonight, you better get there early to see South Portland’s newest talent.
His name is Jesse Gertz, and his pseudonym is Glass Fingers—and no, he does not have glass fingers. But he does know how to make a mesmerizing mix of live instruments, keyboards, humor, and a batch of strange electronics. It’s completely appropriate for tonight’s show, and probably a reason Dan Deacon handpicked him for it, though Gertz won’t disclose exactly why or how—it’s a secret.
He claims women as being the main inspiration for a lot of his songs. Take “I Read Your Blog” for instance. It’s from a time where he was reading this girl’s blog and fell in love. Nothing came out of it except for a song.
While I originally thought of Gertz as a cheeky electronica act, this song and others from the “o, oppossum” EP changed my mind. He dabbles in different styles, some humorous, playful, even contemplative and menacing at times. For the largest and best sampling of his music, listen to some songs from “album.”
Tonight, Gertz will be joined by Computer at Sea, another electronic local who just released a new EP recorded by Ron Harrity of Peapod Recordings. The show at SPACE starts tonight at 8:30 P.M. and costs $10. - Dispatch Mag
Glass Fingers (aka Jesse Gertz from South Portland) is new to me, but [he] could easily become a new favorite. Somehow the music spans lo-fi bedroom pop, electronic ridiculous pop, experimental synthetic sound collage, and everything in between. Not to mention a really well-done cover of Ra Ra Riot’s “Can You Tell.” This is a whole wealth of really exceptional local music that seems to have come out of nowhere – but somehow Dan Deacon found it and picked Glass Fingers to open for him at SPACE on 3/11 (along with local HillyTown favorite Computer At Sea, who Gertz also covers – the same song that we made an unofficial video for). Jesse Gertz, the man behind Glass Fingers, has been perfecting his style since he could hit keys on a keyboard, and every day he is a better artist than the day before.
His music showcases an intense passion and emotional depth that is often missing in electronic acts. It does so without any of the whiny triviality of much emotional music.
While the music can be, at times, serious, shows are always light and fun.
He's all for straight talk, and talking in the third person.
His shows promise not to disappoint. He is going to do everything he can to put on the best possible show.
Unlike many other electronic acts, he doesn't rely on pre-recorded loops when playing live shows, almost every sound heard is performed live.
