How in the world could this music labeled Gospel Rap or Holy Hip Hop come from Memphis, TN - the birth place of blues, rock & roll, and space age gangsta rap and crunk hip-hop? Only God! God took twelve men a long time ago to fulfill his great commission. Starting in November of 2002, a select group of young people have been chosen to continue that same mission found in Matthew 28:19 & 20 known as The Great Commission. Their servant leader Charlie "C-Dub" Folsom, Jr. started at age 12 rapping for God. Twelve years later he was rapping on the Bobby Jones show and at artists' showcases for GMA. Now, he and his band of brothers and sisters continue the good fight through this unique and bumping ministry. It's something that the young & young at heart will listen & dance to.
The Great Commission started performing as members of the Longview Heights S.D.A. Church at 685 E. Mallory in South Memphis where James Owens is the pastor. They still attend services at Longview and work in several of its ministries. While consistent and hard working members at Longview, their ministry territory has expanded. They have performed in states all across the south including numerous times for the Holy Hip Hop Awards show and Showcase in Atlanta and for the Gospel Music Association Showcase in Nashville (GMA’s). One of their songs was selected to be featured on the internationally distributed Holy Hip Hop Vol. 3 Compilation. Thousands have heard the Gospel through their Music, Concerts, and Seminars. Many of these listeners have decided to follow Christ as a result.
God inspires TGC members to write their own lyrics & create their own beats. They even record and mix their own music out of Upper Room Studios in Cordova, TN. They have had four CD releases in four years all to critical acclaim. They have shared the stage with Stellar Award winning artist such as J. Moss, Men of Standard, and Grammy nominees.
