Storyteller Mike Miller donates "Sammy the Story Chair" to the South Carolina Museum
(Columbia, SC) - Would you like to sit in a chair that can inspire a story? The State Museum now has that special chair and that chair's name is Sammy!
On January 11, 2003 Storyteller Mike Miller, from Charleston, SC, donated the museum's storytelling chair and told the story of "Sammy the Story Chair" at the Stringer Discovery Center.
The chair was designed by Storyteller Mike Miller and painted by over 14 young people from elementary school to college.
The primary artist was a freshman from Charleston County School of the Arts, Alyssa Pabst.
The purpose of this chair is to promote the power of storytelling in our communities,especially among our youth.
"South Carolina has a rich heritage of storytelling and in recent years there has been a decline in this tradition." revealed Storyteller Mike Miller. "Many storytelling groups, such as the National Storytelling Network, the Southern Order of Storytellers and the recently formed, South Carolina Storytelling Network, have taken on the challenge of promoting the power of storytelling."
Mike Miller, known as a "Full Contact" Storyteller & Professional Silly Person has been on the road since 1996 transforming audiences with unique, energetic, and fun business and family storytelling programs.
From statewide festivals to radio, and TV stations across the nation, Mike has entertained preschoolers to CEO's, and all kinds of groups in between.

Visitors will have a chance to view and sit in the chair at The State Museum, 301 Gervais St., Columbia.

South Carolina Storyteller Named 2002 Storyteller of the Year First Runner Up
Mike Miller from Charleston, South Carolina was awarded the title "Storyteller of the Year®" First Runner Up, at the 56th Annual Lions Club Sweet Corn Festival in Millersport, Ohio on August 31, 2002.
Miller was the first South Carolina Storyteller to be awarded the honor of being selected as a finalist in this national event.
Three master storytellers vied for the official title "Storyteller of the Year" and a top cash prize of $1,000. Mike Miller from Charleston, South Carolina was First Runner Up, Nettie Martin from Kalamazoo, Michigan was Second Runner Up and Leeny Del Seamond of Westford, Massachusetts was named "Storyteller of the Year®".
Finalists were selected from sixty-two professional storytellers who submitted entries this year. The theme for the 2002 contest was, "Adventure/Travel Stories".
"The contest includes three-tiered judging process," explained Donna Foster, Program Director for the event. "In the first round the judges test the tellers" ability to stay within the time constraints (15 minutes or less) and tell a story on a theme. The second round judges scrutinize the story structure, listen for good vocal control and evaluate the pacing of the teller's stories. During the Finals the judges are looking at performance skills and how well the tellers relate with the audience."
"Our selection process is very demanding," revealed Foster. "These tellers have to be able to focus their energy and project it out toward the listeners. The Festival setting is really tough and it takes a lot of energy to be able to reach a large festival audience. If a storyteller can reach this audience they have to be good - REAL good," said Foster.
The "Storyteller of the Year®" event is sponsored the Ohio Arts Council and produced by the Creative Arts Institute. The program was videotaped for broadcast on Ohio¹s Public Access Television Stations.
