The Great Wilderness

Es un murmullo tan fuerte que se ha vuelto ensordecedor: Sudamérica indie está en auge. De unos dos años a esta parte, son muchas las bandas que han conseguido sortear las barreras de la promoción y las de prejuicios para cruzar el charco -en el sentido contrario al nuestro- y quedarse. Hoy tenemos a The Great Wilderness, de Costa Rica (de dónde nos llegaron Zópilot, Monte o Las Robertas). Desde 2010 peleando con EP’s, hace unas semanas lanzaron su última referencia. Un LP llamado In The Hour of The Wolf (Autoproducido, 2013) con el que se han ganado una buena recepción ya antes de bajar del avión. Distorsión en clave rock, pero con las predisposición a agradar de una canción pop. Cuando parece que van a quemar de abrasividad (“Vonnegut”) saben como levantar el pie del acelerador, o mezclar una voz gritona (“(Dawn) Platonic”) con la suficiente pegada en batería para que se contraste y se funda en el minutaje. Desde la capital que es ese paraíso llamado Costa Rica, ya han saboreado pequeños triunfos como que fueran seleccionados para la compilación de bandas DIY Sí San José en 2011 o que repitan, tras su paso en 2012, en el SXSW de la próxima edición. Hasta ahora, este es el momento más emocionante en la historia de The Great Wilderness, dice la cantante, guitarrista y compositora Paola Rogue. La actualidad del grupo es la más conmovedora en su lustro de vida. Quizá tiene algo que ver con que esta semana saldrá su primer disco o, simplemente, con que la banda siga existiendo, tras tiempos de grave estrechez.

Los últimos 12 meses han sido desafiantes para esta empresa, que dice interpretar un género llamado dream rock y que se dio a conocer en el 2009, en Costa Rica, como parte de una generación artística que ha estampado dinamismo y variedad a una escena musical que parecía estancada en un rock conformista durante otros años.

En medio de cambios de alineación, el grupo nunca se alejó del objetivo de grabar un disco de larga duración, proceso que duró más de un año y en el que también mediaron factores como disponibilidad, economía y oportunidades.

Por supuesto, esa revolución que estalló desde lo interno de la banda, tuvo mucho que ver con el resultado final de la aventura, con aquello que ahora exterioriza en un álbum de nueve canciones.

“Era una situación abrumadora. No sabíamos qué iba a suceder, hubo muchos cambios y tuvimos que enfrentar partes difíciles, pero caer no era una opción. Quisimos contar una historia relacionada con cómo enfrentamos los miedos y eso que creemos que es lo peor que puede pasar”, relata Rogue.

Luz. In the Hour of the Wolf es el título del primer álbum de The Great Wilderness. La frase, que significa "en la hora del lobo" hace referencia al “momento entre la noche y la aurora cuando la mayoría de la gente muere, cuando el sueño es más profundo, cuando las pesadillas son más reales, cuando los insomnes se ven acosados por sus mayores temores, y cuando los fantasmas y los demonios son más poderosos”, según Ingmar Bergman, director sueco de una película de 1968 del mismo nombre.

Para Rogue, el significado es más literal, aunque también de inspiración nórdica: “La hora del lobo es entre las tres y las cinco de la mañana, cuando llegan los lobos a buscar a los niños y a comérselos”.

La metáfora trasciende más allá de la realidad del grupo y de sus integrantes, y apunta a una sociedad que, sin duda, ya no experimenta la hora del lobo, sino que vive la vida del lobo. Encarar ese miedo, saberse capaz de superarlo y, con ello, seguir caminando, despojándose de toda zozobra; esa es la premisa.

Para un grupo con una sombría obra previa, este no es un patrón, sino una convicción; en dos discos cortos y un sencillo –lanzados entre 2010 y 2011–, The Great Wilderness ha abordado temáticas como la exploración interna, la claustrofobia, la ansiedad, el determinismo y el pos-Apocalipsis.

“Se trata de tomar esos miedos y esa oscuridad, pero enfrentarlos desde un punto diferente al que predominaba en los otros discos”, revela Rogue. “Ya no los enfrentamos desde el pos-Apocalipsis, donde había un montón de oscuridad y miedo y ‘salven a los niños’ y ‘cuiden todo esto’, sino desde el punto en el que están sucediendo cosas que no nos gustan, pero podemos decir ‘estoy despierto y estoy vivo’" (como canta en el tema Hexagon, que se puede escuchar en el Bandcamp del grupo).

“Estamos un poco desconectados como criaturas vivientes”, continúa. “Estamos asustados, encerrados en nosotros mismos, y eso se plasma en el disco. No podemos evitar influenciarnos por lo que sucede a nuestro alrededor, lo que vemos en las noticias, en las caras de las personas en la calle. Puede que todos estemos un poco locos, pero estamos despiertos y estamos vivos. Estamos admitiendo que estamos encerrados en la hora del lobo y es importante salir de ahí para sentirnos mejor como seres humanos. No necesitamos estar siempre tan asustados; estamos aquí”.

The Great Wilderness es otra de las joyas de Costa Rica, formados en el 2009, su primer trabajo fue lanzado en el 2010, Afterimages of Glowing Visions un EP semi-conceptual de 5 temas enfocado en un sueño postapocalíptico que obliga a la exploración del mundo interno. esta primera probada fue mas que suficiente para que llamarán la atención de medios nacionales e internacionales, todo con justa razón, este corto trabajo mezcla de gran manera guitarras explosivas, pasajes dream-pop y algo de actitud reminiscente al noise de los primeros Sonic Youth.

Este primer trabajo alcanzo para mostrar que The Great Wilderness tenia algo, falta decir que su primer EP fue mezclado y masterizado por Ronal Bustamente ( músico de gran trayectoria tanto adelante como detrás de la consolas en Costa Rica), el mismo repetiría en su segundo EP Tiny Monsters que salio ese mismo año; 6 temas nuevos donde la banda crea atmósferas aun mas oscuras. Guitarras como gotas de agua que se van rompiendo en miles de puntos,momentos calmos que explotan en oleadas sonicas se van convirtiendo en su marca de autenticidad y la voz dulce y provocativa en constante simbiosis con el resto del conjunto como complemento perfecto.



La banda sin dudas después de este trabajo, logra consolidarse no solo a nivel de oyentes sino mas importante a nivel musical como una propuesta mas madura cancion tras cancion, con un sonido personal que logra definirlos y diferenciarlos como banda. Después de un single en el 2011( Dark Horse) la banda hizo su primer tour europeo presentándose en países como Alemania, Francia y el Reino Unido, los ultimos dos años entre una y otra cosa han llevado a The Great Wilderness recientemente a Estados Unidos donde se presentaron en los festivales Culture Collide de FILTER Magazine(Los Ángeles) y el CBGB OMFUG Music Festival (Nueva York).



Actualmente conformados por Paola Rogue( voz y guitarra), Jimena Torres ( voz y guitarra) Marco Gölcher (bajo) Diego Trika ( batería) la banda ha lanzado en este 2013 dos singles previos a su primer larga duración que se titulará In the Hour of Wolf el cual estarán presentando el viernes 15 de Noviemebre en su natal San José, In the Hour of the wolf y Hexagon los dos temas elegidos como singles , estos dejan entrever un sonido mas directo que no deja de lado el misticismo de su sonido.




Viendo en retrospectiva, The Great Wilderness ha acumulado bastantes logros en poco menos de cuatros años, es sin dudas uno de los proyectos de shoegaze latino americano mas importantes, han logrado llevar su música a escenarios insospechados, pero mas importante que eso han logrado crear un conjunto con una fuerza propia y capaz de mutar su sonido sin perder su esencia.

I'm a little late to this, hardly a surprise there. Costa Rica's The Great Wilderness released their latest single "Hexagon" earlier this month, the second track taken from their forthcoming debut LP and is currently available as a free download via Bandcamp. The album is said to follow on November 15th and is definitely one to look out for as this and earlier single, the title-track "In The Hour Of The Wolf" testify.

"Hexagon" starts as it means to continue with ominous percussion and swirling guitar echoes creating a compelling tapestry of the darkened world that's perfectly in keeping with today's date - Hallow's Eve - slowly and surely it builds in intensity around grizzly vocals and tour de force riffs to commanding peaks which shiver with mysterious power. The Great Wilderness regresó a Costa Rica con buenas nuevas: durante su reciente gira de presentaciones en festivales estadounidenses, la banda costarricense fue anunciada de su inclusión en el festival de entretenimiento SXSW, el cual se celebrará en marzo del 2014, en Austin, Texas.

Aquello se escribió en piedra este miércoles, cuando el sitio oficial del SXSW difundió su nombre como parte de la primera lista de la parrilla de artistas participantes en su edición del próximo año.

Esta será la segunda participación del cuarteto de dream rock en el festival, que lo escogió por primera vez en el 2012. El evento une la música, el cine y lo interactivo con otras manifestaciones artísticas y digitales, durante un periodo de una semana, en distintos recintos de la ciudad.

"Nos emociona presentarnos en el festival SXSW 2014", escribó la banda en Facebook, agradeciéndole a sus fans por "llevarnos a tantos sitios" y asegurando estar "conmovidos".

La semana pasada, The Great Wilderness viajó a Los Ángeles, California, para presentarse en el festival Cultures Collide, de la revista Filter, para luego trasladarse a Nueva York y tocar en el CBGB Festival 2013.

Además, en el medio de ese ciclo, la banda también dio a conocer un nuevo tema llamado Hexagon, el segundo adelanto que presenta de su primer álbum de larga duración, In the Hour of the Wolf, del que anteriormente se había publicado una canción homónima. - La Nación newspaper

Earlier in the evening, the petite frames of guitarists Paola Rogue and Jimena Torres in pretty floral dresses may be deceiving if you’ve never heard of their band The Great Wilderness. The Costa Rican dream-rock band surprised newcomers to the Taix lounge when Rogue growled into the mic with vocals that could have rivaled any death metal singer. With one of the most internationally eclectic mixes of bands you'll find at any event, you never know what you're going to get at Culture Collide. No exception to this were The Great Wilderness from Costa Rica. The four piece are made up of two female guitarists and vocalists accompanied by a two guys on the bass and drums, all working together to perform some unique rock and roll. Their stylings could easily find their place amongst the bands of Soundwave, though I find it difficult to compare them to anyone in particular - there's influences from the worlds of punk rock, dream pop, hard rock, classic rock and much more going on there... Welcoming our South American neighbors, Costa Rica's The Great Wilderness speak on their first SXSW, Game of Thrones and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
What was your first experience onstage in front of an American audience like?
Our first experience was at SXSW 2012, which was hectic but amazing. The audience was great and we had lots of fun. We found that American audiences are somewhat different from Costa Rican ones because if they like what you’re doing, they pay attention to the music. At home, most people tend to go out to gigs to have fun and catch up with friends, which is cool but some of them like to chat while the band is playing, which is not cool at all.

Have you ever bought anything in America that you can’t buy at home that has become part of your everyday life?
We bought some things last time we played in America; most of them can be found in Costa Rica but at much higher prices. I remember my sole goal was to find Game of Thrones: Season Two and, yes, that’s a big part of my life now. Jimena, our guitarist, got some gear for her camera and it’s been very useful for her career as a photographer. This time, we need to buy a new tuner and videogames, it’s a must.

What American stereotypes have you found to be true or false?
We always heard Americans were kind of rude to Latin rock bands, but let me tell you, that’s not true at all. Americans can be open-minded and warm-hearted. We can’t wait to see you guys again.

Were you able to see many American bands in the States while you were here? What bands from America do you like most?
We love a whole bunch of American bands like Interpol, R.E.M., Sonic Youth, The Soft Moon, The Flaming Lips, Swans, Washed Out and many more. They all influence our sound in their own ways. Last time, we saw a lot of American artists; the festival environment allows you to just walk in and out of venues to check out whatever you like. I guess the most memorable moment with an American artist was when I unexpectedly met Daniel Johnston. I’ve always admired the heart he puts in his music, he’s a sweet soul. This year we’ve arranged everything so we can go see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club live. It’s one of our favorites and I think we’ll scream like teenage girls. Trika, our drummer, is trying to go see Minus the Bear, he really likes them.

What are you looking forward to most about ?Culture Collide?
Wow. Can I just say everything? Culture Collide is the most exciting and diverse experience we’ve been invited to so far. None of us has ever been to LA, so there’s that, and I have to be honest now: I couldn’t believe everything there is to do and see after watching 2012 Culture Collide recap video. We feel honored to be part of this great thing.

I first "introduced" The Great Wilderness here a couple of years back when I'd just missed the opportunity to catch them live, they've not returned to the UK since and this track "In the Hour of the Wolf" - the lead track taken from a forthcoming album of the same name - is the first new material in that time with the band having seemingly gone through a couple of line-up changes too, thankfully though, none of the explosive talent seems to have left to group.

La temática de este trabajo está relacionada con la noción escandinava de “La hora del lobo”; el momento entre las 3:00 y las 5:00 de la madrugada durante el cual los lobos acechan a las puertas de los hogares. El trío (si así es, trío despues de la salida de Monserrat Vargas) nacional conformado por Paola Rogue, Jimena Torres y Alexandro Baviera anunciaron hoy el título de su próximo disco de estudio. In The Hour Of The Wolf se lanzará “pronto”, al menos así afirma la banda aunque en declaraciones anteriores, TGW afirmó que a finales de año ya podremos degustar la producción.

This year’s Festival Imperial is heavier on the estrogen than in previous years, and that’s a very good thing. The Great Wilderness – Costa Rica

Fresh off their tour at the legendary South by Southwest (SXSW) music and technology festival in Austin, Texas, the dreamy Ticas manning the guitars, drums and microphones of The Great Wilderness produce an ethereal sound that’s as captivating as they look.

The Great Wilderness has already toured in Europe, and they are returning to Costa Rica to please fans at the Festival Imperial with singles like Dark Horse (Parts 1 and 2) and Nicholas Cage. Their sound can be described as influenced by Sonic Youth by way of Joy Division. - News CR

El grupo nacional de dream rock partirá mañana, lunes, para la ciudad de Austin, en Texas, para participar en esta afamada cita que reúne a artistas, productores, medios y ejecutivos de todo el mundo.

Ellas estarán el viernes 16 en el showcase oficial de HGTV, junto a grupos como Cymbals Eat Guitars, A Classic Education, Waters y Unicycle Loves You.

Para Rogue, vocalista y guitarrista, aún es difícil de creer que esto esté por ser una realidad. “Llenamos la solicitud el último día y no pensé que nos fueran a llamar; cuando nos dieron la noticia, casi me descompongo”, dijo.

Según la artista, esperan que su participación sirva para que más bandas ticas participen en futuras ediciones. En el 2011, la banda Las Robertas participó en este festival.

Entre los músicos que actuarán este año están Fiona Apple, Bruce Springsteen y Keane.

El tan esperado viaje de The Great Wilderness será documentado por el productor audiovisual Diego Arias, y el resultado se proyectará al público en los próximos meses, según informó la banda en un comunicado de prensa.

En La Guácima. En la agenda de The Great Wilderness está subrayada también la cita que tendrá para el cercano Festival Imperial 2012. La banda se presentará en el autódromo La Guácima (Alajuela), el sábado 24 de marzo.

Con respecto a su participación en el próximo Festival Imperial, el grupo ha aumentado su cantidad de ensayos para prepararse.

“Una cosa es tocar en Europa y en Estados Unidos, y otra es tocar en casa. Significa mucho para nosotros que nos hayan tomado en cuenta”, afirmó Rogue.

Por otra parte, el grupo está por comenzar el proceso de grabación de su tercer lanzamiento, que se espera esté disponible durante la primera mitad del 2012.

El disco, aún sin título, incluirá cinco temas que cuentan con el aporte del baterista Alexandro Baviera (A Cry for Marie y Alphabetics). “Algunos de estos podrán escucharse en los próximos conciertos de TGW”, dijo la banda.

The Great Wilderness estuvo este año en el prestigioso festival se música South by Southwest en Austin, Texas. Durante su estadía la banda aprovecho para grabar una sesión acústica de una de las canciones que estara incluída en su nuevo LP. Sí LP. La banda recientemente decidio lanzar un álbum de duración larga en vez de un EP.
El video de “Wetlands” fue grabado en la casa del educador y artista multidisciplinario, Martín Perna. Martín es fundador de las bandas Antibalas y Ocote Soul Sounds. También ha grabado junto a bandas y artistas como Scarlett Johansson, Apsci, Architecture in Helsinki y TV On The Radio.
La producción del video fue un esfuerzo de la ya conocida iniciativa de Alerta Rock de Rock Ice y Diego Arias. El video empieza con Perna mostrando y cuidando el jardín de su casa acompañado de los primeros segundos de “Wetlands” que son de ensueño. Anyway, wittering over. I saw this lot recently and I think their sound was a bit squashed by a crap sound system. Luckily someone stuck a CD in my hand, a promo that had both their EPs and a single on it, now dating from 2010 and 2011. Even more serendipity prevailed when I actually played the CD in my hotel room and got more than a bit hooked. Listen to the way this track is all twinkly in amongst the wall of sound. It starts off dreamy-warpaint-ish. The vocals drop in like syrup on the top of cough medicine, and then the guitars kick and buck. Verrrry nice indeed. Like I said, their recorded output is all last year darling, but the fact they were playing a showcase at SXSW must indicate that they're not exactly dormant. I found The Great Wilderness a little too late for my liking, the Costa Rican group (who share their bassist, Monserrat Vargas with Las Robertas) played a handful of UK dates just a few weeks ago, unfortunately for me I discovered them after that, lets hope they return to our shores again soon.

They've three releases to date (all their releases can be downloaded for free from their bandcamp - too kind). Their debut EP 'Afterimages of Glowing Visions' signalled their intent, a relentless hurricane of raw, rocking noise. The assault begins with "1956" which drowns guitars in healthy washes of reverb, "Ada" kicks you in the gut straight away with its ferocious wall of sound crescendos, before soothing with irresistible ethereal vocals then resuming the onslaught, unleashing another wave of bashing drums and buzzing guitar. "Sandbox" is equally praise worthy, a brilliant debut EP, download it whilst you can.

Their second release 'Tiny Monster' came out towards the end of 2010 and is more expressive and ambient, full of psychedelic melodies and swirling textures perhaps best portrayed on the stunning "When in June", languid guitar soundscapes and hazy, delicate vocals, it's simply beautiful. Other stand-out's include opener "On Smoke", which floats between dream-like melody and exploding rhythms with aggressive snarling vocals and "Nicholas Cage", which certainly packs more bite into its four minutes than its namesake has in any of his recent movies.
Their most recent (and best) release is the spellbinding "Dark Horse", a sprawlin g nine minute epic, seamlessly flowing from luscious, dreamy melodies, shimmering guitar rhythms sewn together by vocalist Paola's haunting voice to a shattering cataclysm of pummelling drums and frenetic guitar riffs played with such searing intensity you'll be left gobsmacked, then you'll want to press repeat, again and again. - Just Music that I Like

El cuarteto de chicas originarias de Costa Rica se formó en 2009 con integrantes de la desaparecida banda Lolita Piñata, inicialmente se hacían llamar Jackie Oh. La alineación actual se foram por Paola Rogue (voz, guitarra), Andrea San Gil (voz, bateria), Jimena Torres (segunda guitarra) y Monserrat Vargas (bajo). Así como Las Robertas, cantan en inglés pero
con un sonido más fuerte y armonía más completa cargada dentro del post-punk con ese toque de rock inglés, con gran carga en bajo, batería y guitarra. Sí San José es un proyecto bastante interesante que surge en Costa Rica. Nueve bandas de rock de aquel
país, se juntaron en septiembre de 2011 en una antigua casa para grabar dos canciones cada una, mismas
que ahora son parte de un compilado que acaba de lanzarse bajo el mismo nombre.
En este proyecto participaron Continental, Las Robertas, Los Problemas, Monte, Niño Koi, Polär, The
Great Wilderness,The Tower y Zòpilot!, y aunque son bandas con distintas propuestas, van del post-rock
instrumental y el shoegaze al noise y al pop experimental -de todo un poco-, a final de cuentas comparten la
misma forma de trabajar y fluyen con la misma energía.
Los tracks se grabaron simplemente con la ayuda de una mixer y una grabadora de cassette de cuatro
canales, y el disco fue producido por Vito Petruzzelli [quien comenzó el proyecto], Daniel Ortuño y Adrian
Poveda.
El disco ya se puede descargar en Bandcamp o directamente aquí de forma gratuita, y muy pronto estarán
estrenando un documental que cuenta la historia detrás de Sí San José. Un proyecto que por el simple hecho
de experimentar de forma sonora y de documentar la escena de una ciudad, es por demás interesante. Pero
el resultado, que por el momento es este disco, lo es también.

This Costa Rican, Dream Rockin’, Brit post punk influenced female foursome, who we’ve mentioned in our April Playlist and the Si San Jose Compilation, is just one of the tiny, tiny seeds that will eventually (hopefully) help blossom the next rock garden of the future. Much like the bands of the ’90s alt rock explosion that The Great Wilderness also clearly takes as influences (Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, and others lumped into the original alt rock tag) they are influenced by... shit from 20 years ago. And that is a good thing. ’90s rock was ’70s rock and ’70s punk influenced, so now what only makes sense is for current bands to be ’90s rock and ’90s punk influenced. But grunge wasn’t exactly ’70s rock and punk. It had a new spin. The Great Wilderness may not be MBV or Sonic Youth or Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, but they are definitely apart of the same water that will eventually be the next great wave of rock in years to come. So although they may not be extremely important, or ever be extremely important, the idea is there and we salute them for that. - Remezcla

Canción del Año Dark Horse - The Great Wilderness

El cuarteto de dream rock The Great Wilderness ha hecho una muy buena labor dejando plasmada su evolución musical en sus tres grabaciones hasta la fecha. En 2010, su año debut, las muchachas presentaron dos EPs que les posicionaron muy bien dentro de la escena y en este 2011 llegaron todavía más alto con el lanzamiento del sencillo "Dark Horse," el cual bien podría argumentarse es su mejor trabajo.

"Dark Horse" es un tema ambicioso que consolidó a The Great Wilderness como lo que es: una máquina con una fuerza creativa impresionante que hace de fotografías apocalípticas y escenarios tenebrosos melodías seductoras, llevaderas y enérgicas. El track de casi nueve minutos fue también "dividido" en dos partes, siendo la primera la que se promocionó en medios, de la mano de un excelente video realizado por Sürrealista.

El sencillo doble fue lanzado para el Record Store Day, como parte de una iniciativa global por hacer de ese día una fecha más que especial para los aficionados a la música. Tras presentarse en Panamá, Alemania, Inglaterra y Francia, TGW alista pasaporte de nuevo para el 2012, pero sobre todo, nuevo material. Habrá que estar pendientes. - 89dB

It’s easy to forget how blessed we are in Manchester because on any given evening there’s a relentless tide of bands washing through the city’s bars and clubs. In some places however, finding somewhere to perform and an audience willing to make the effort to come and see you play is a lot more problematical. The Great Wilderness, a rock group based in Costa Rica, have found a novel solution to this dilemma by hatching an audacious plot that’s seen them embark on a self-financed tour so they can play their music in London, Paris, Berlin, as well as a date at the Night and Day Café in Manchester.
Composed of four young women - Paola Rogue (vocals, guitars), Jimena Torres (guitars, backing vocals), Monserrat Vargas (bass) and Andrea San Gil (drums) - The Great Wilderness wears its influences firmly and proudly on its sleeves and once your ears have become accustomed to the darkness of their sound you can pick out touches of The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Joy Division. But still, if you listen even closer you’ll hear the crackling sparks of an emerging originality in the band’s music. Latest single, the brooding ‘Dark Horse’ shows a marked progression and tonight brings the bands set to a glorious conclusion.

The band looks incredibly comfortable up there on the small Night and Day stage and there’s plenty of movement to accompany the different shades the girls entice from their instruments. It’s a measured and well-paced performance. Both Rogue’s and Torres’s guitars coil tightly around each other, leaving Vargas’s inventive basslines and San Gils powerhouse drumming to anchor the rhythm. It doesn’t always work, but when the girls get it right, they create a drive and tension in the music that’s positively exciting


Watching a band like The Great Wilderness suddenly brings home the distances music is able to travel and the people it can touch. Take Joy Division for example, it would be extremely difficult to identify any group that was more securely tethered to a certain time and place, and you wonder how people can ‘get it’ when they don’t have any experience of the environment in which the band’s music was forged. But, you should never underestimate the powerful centrifugal force that music generates, allowing it to spin its messages to the most unlikely places. And it’s one of the wonders of music that eventually it penetrates and infiltrates everywhere, speaking a universal language that communicates as much meaning to those dancing in the epicentre as it does to those stood watching from the furthest edges.

But it’s genuinely humbling to watch a group like The Great Wilderness take a massive leap into the unknown, for no other reason than they want to be heard. Groups like The Great Wilderness deserve your time and effort because, if nothing else, they really do embody the true spirit of music. - Mudkiss Magazine, Manchester

Travel broadens the mind, though sometimes it can be so much more than that. For the four musicians who make-up the Great Wilderness, it can be a life-changing experience. Travelling all the way from Costa Rica, the band is in the middle of enjoying a wild adventure playing gigs to appreciative audiences in Europe and England.
On a balmy autumn Tuesday night in Manchester, a small crowd will witness The Great Wilderness rip through a powerful set at the Night and Day Café. However earlier on in the evening, Paola, Andrea, Jimena and Monserrat agreed to share a little of their time with Mudkiss, to tell us who they are, what they like and where they want to go next:

PHIL: Tell us about The Great Wilderness…

PAOLA: We started playing together about a little bit more than a year ago; we started with Andrea, Monserrat and me. Then Jimena joined and the sound just gelled together. She brought in what we were missing. So we started writing our first EP in April 2010 and released it in June 2010. It was some sort of semi-conceptual album called ‘After Images of Glowing Visions’ and when we released it people liked it so almost immediately we started writing new songs. So we decided to release another EP ‘Tiny Monsters’ in November of the same year and that received a really good response as well…

PHIL: Was that in Costa Rica?

PAOLA: Yes and also over the internet where we noticed that people outside Costa Rica were listening to our music which was really cool because we didn’t expect that. Then in April of this year we released ‘Dark Horse’ and our goal for 2011 was to leave the country and play outside Costa Rica, and now we’re here.

PHIL: Is there a big music scene in Costa Rica?

PAOLA: The scene is cool and we’re building a movement right now. There are really cool bands in Costa Rica that don’t get noticed outside the country.

JIMENA: I think it’s a small version of the scene that celebrates itself.

ANDREA: Because Costa Rica is a small country we don’t have a scene for every different rock genre, it’s like one band for each (laughs), except for metal because there’s so many metal bands. Also most of the bands are concentrated in the capital because of the limited choice of places to play. But there are scenes growing in other parts in other parts of Costa Rica and bands from the capital are starting to go on tour there so it’s interesting.

PHIL: Do you have any radio stations in Costa Rica that promotes these scenes?

PAOLA: We do have a local radio station, but it’s not something that makes a difference because the Costa Rican audience is used to alternative nineties rock and most of the people just listen to American and English bands. But when the attention is focused on local bands the reception can be a little bit hostile because people just want to go for the safe choice. There are about three or four bands in Costa Rica that people follow because they’ve been following them for twenty years, but bands that are trying to surface right now, they’re new so it’s like ‘why bother when we have these other bands?’ It’s hard because the indie scene, if you can call it a scene, is not getting all that much recognition because the focus is on what’s been there for the past twenty years. For example the government would chose these older bands for cultural activities and big international concerts will be opened by these bands, so opportunities for newer bands are scarce. It’s a comfort zone.


PHIL: Is this your first time outside Costa Rica?

ANDREA: We played in Panama a couple of months ago at a festival. That was very close to home and the crowd and the scene was different to Costa Rica but this is even more different.

PHIL: What I find unusual is that you didn’t go north to the States, instead you decided to head east to Europe…

ANDREA: We considered it when we were planning going out of the country but there’s the visa issue which made it hard…

PAOLA: Visas are very expensive for America. To get an artist visa costs a lot of money and they give it to you for a short period of time. But we like England and we like Europe so it was the obvious choice.



PHIL: Was the tour difficult to set up?

ANDREA: We paid for this tour by playing charity concerts and stuff to be able to come here.

PAOLA: Yes it was but it was worth it. We’ve played Berlin at Lido, which was great. And then we’ve played at the Dublin Castle, the old Blue Last and the Powers Bar in London. When we were playing the charity concerts Andrea mentioned we didn’t think we were going to make it because we had to raise a lot of money for plane tickets, but what was surprising is that even if the audience in Costa Rica is not that into listening to new bands they came forward. So it was really reassuring to have people come forward for us, and we know they are supporting us back home and talking about this thing we’re doing. And right now I think it’s a brighter time for Costa Rican music becau - Mudkiss Magazine, Manchester

Es muy importante saber tirar ese primer golpe. Si conecta correctamente, el resto del pleito es un queque. Hay ventaja clara. Igual, artistas costarricenses llenos de promesa e ímpetu han logrado deshacerse en mares de duda y expectativa tras un maravilloso arranque, dejando un fade-out como única evidencia de su paso. A cinco meses de lanzar su disco debut, que atrajo la atención de blogs internacionales y una positiva mención en la calificada revista británica NME, The Great Wilderness sorprendió sacando su segunda obra, el Tiny Monsters. No solo asombra su pronta aparición, si no el ser una clara mejora sobre su primer trabajo.

Es común notar influencias de artistas recientes sobre las bandas jóvenes en Costa Rica, pero The Great Wilderness es de las pocas que logran comunicar un gran sentido de “historia musical” en su trabajo, donde si bien uno puede ubicar su sonido en el contexto contemporáneo, a la vez logra brillar un conocimiento pleno de lo que ha sucedido antes. Esto es aparente en el Tiny Monsters desde sus primeros segundos, donde texturas súper evocativas a los trabajos ambient de Brian Eno crean el espacio donde se desarrollará "On Smoke", canción que abre el disco. Si bien uno puede atribuir esos sonidos a la influencia que Eno ha tenido sobre otras bandas que informan a la banda, como los Stone Roses o My Bloody Valentine, con solo escuchar las estructuras de las canciones (y del disco mismo) uno puede notar que la presencia del trabajo de Eno es significativa, sobretodo su trabajo en Berlín con David Bowie (otro ingrediente más en el mortero).


"On Smoke" abre el disco con siniestra intensidad y amenaza, y lentamente va cumpliendo su promesa de violencia abriéndose como una flor sónica de arreglos y distorsión. Si uno ha tenido la suerte de ver la pieza en vivo notará como es de las claras favoritas de la banda, la ejecución y ubicación en el disco haciendo patente ese amor. Sin pausa alguna arranca "Nicholas Cage", lo más cercano a un single que tiene el Tiny Monsters, una maravillosa confección de pop ruidoso reclama lo inútil de agarrarse de la fe para disipar el temor a la muerte, mientras la impecable sección rítmica de Andrea San Gil y Monserrat Vargas mantiene un groove casi bailable pero indiscutiblemente oscuro. Se cierra esta primera mitad del disco con "Light Us Green", talvez única canción de The Great Wilderness que me recuerda a Lolita Piñata, banda previa de mitad de las integrantes, con sus vocales casi gruñidas y tono pasivo-agresivo.

La segunda mitad del disco está caracterizada por una fragilidad casi dolorosa, partiendo con la conversación de las guitarras de Paola Rogue y Jimena Torres en "When in June", arreglos que justifican mi respuesta ante la pregunta: ¿quienes son mis guitarristas favoritas en este momento? Muchas veces el amor no nace meramente ante la destreza si no ante el buen gusto y la disciplina. Una canción como "When In June" sólo es posible cuando se sabe cuando frenar y cuando dejar espacio para que las cosas respiren, lo cual es casi irónico cuando la letra habla de amor incondicional y feliz entrega. Usada para abrir los conciertos de la banda, no hago ningún intento por ocultar mi entusiasmo por ella, talvez mi favorita de todas las canciones del 2010. "Polyethylene Beauty Lotion" nos sirve como un puente breve de musique concrète entre una y otra, y arranca "Barcelona". Si bien empieza tímida y sutil con voces casi susurradas, "Barcelona" lentamente se va convirtiendo en un monstruo de guitarras alarmantes y baterías intimidantes, que crea un huracán de bulla y emoción que termina por abandonar todo tipo de pretensión de estructura tradicional y confiesa sus perversas intenciones enclaustrantes y angustiosas. Un cierre atrevido para un disco ambicioso e inesperado.

El equipo de producción de este disco hace una diferencia importante. Las Wilderness han depositado su fe por segunda vez en las manos de Daniel Ortuño (Señorita Maestra, Alta Costura), joven talento que empieza a acumular un atractivo curriculum de grabaciones para pequeñas bandas locales, y en Ronald Bustamente (Visión Armónica del Caos), veterano partícipe de la escena musical nacional y piedra angular del colectivo Nois Nois. Su manejo casi virtuoso del ruido y las texturas logran dar el resultado que la banda requiere para poder comunicar la versatilidad de su sonido y sus intenciones a nivel de composición, a pesar de las limitaciones de su equipo. Acompañados en este round por Alejandro Imbach (Seka, Continental), logran comprobar que la confianza que la banda les sigue dando está fundamentada, y que su decisión de no utilizar los estudios grandes de grabación de nuestro país ha sido la acertada.

The Great Wilderness se encuentran en una de las rachas de conciertos más impresionantes que me ha tocado ver en 15 años que llevo en la escena nacional, donde cada show convierte a nuevos fans, y donde repetidamente se escuchan comentarios de sorpresa. Aparte de esto, - 89decibeles

Estamos prácticamente a horas de terminar este 2010, un año que definitivamente fue muy activo en cuanto a lanzamientos y nuevas bandas se refiere. Éste también fue el segundo año de una sección llamada Under, en la que cada semana aprovechamos para recomendarles una banda nueva, relativamente nueva o no tan conocida que creemos deben escuchar.

Por supuesto que algunos grupos nos han llamado más la atención que otros. Tuvimos incluso un par de sorpresas de esta parte del continente; de ahí que hemos decidido reunir, para cerrar el año, a los 10 proyectos más interesantes que presentamos en esta sección.

10. The Middle East



Este colectivo australiano ya tuvo algunas presentaciones exitosas en el 2010 y para mi tiene uno de los sonidos más bonitos que he escuchado este año. Su folk melancólico y excelentes arreglos son definitivamente de antología y su EP homónimo ha sido uno de los que más he oído en este 2010. Es un hecho que su música no va de acuerdo con el hype en este momento, sin embargo, la belleza de sus composiciones les merece al menos un poco de atención. De ellos recomendamos escuchar el tema “Blood”, canción que además cuenta con un video encantador y un ritmo de fantasia.




9. Wild Beasts



Los bonos de esta banda inglesa han subido como la espuma desde el lanzamiento de su segunda producción, Two Dancers, el año pasado. El disco incluso se llevó una nominación al Mercury Prize, un logro no menor y definitivamente merecido para este grupo de ritmo energético y vocales operísticas que lo mismo recuerda al rock clásico que a otros proyectos con vocalizaciones del mismo estilo. En su momento les recomendamos que oyeran “All the Kings`s Men”, una de las mejores canciones de su segunda producción que al menos yo no me he aburrido de escuchar.



8. Tennis



Cuando comenzamos esta sección hace más de una año, les pedimos que nos recomendaran bandas y grupos que creyeran podrían ser interesantes para el resto de los lectores. La respuesta no se hizo esperar y hasta este momento nos ha contactado mucha gente para hablarnos de las bandas que les están gustando o en las que están tocando. Una de estas recomendaciones fue precisamente Tennis, dúo compuesto por Patrick Riley y Alaina Moore, un matrimonio que amenaza con llenar nuestros oídos en el 2011 con su nueva producción, y que en este año que termina nos conquistó con sus viajes náuticos y su pop de sabor antiguo. En su momento les pusimos “Baltimore”, canción de su EP debut que hasta hoy sigue sonando encantadoramente buena.



7. Get Well Soon



Con Konstantin Gropper y su banda Get Well Soon fue que comenzamos este 2010 lleno de excelentes sorpresas. Y la verdad es que no pudo haber habido mejor inicio, pues aunque su más reciente producción, Vexations, no es necesariamente lo más fácil de escuchar, tiene algunos temas sumamente interesantes que auguran un futuro prometedor para este alemán, que además utiliza una propuesta visual bastante interesante para acompañar su música. En su momento nos volvimos locos con “Angry Young Man”, para mi uno de los mejores tracks que me trajo este 2010.



6. Casiokids



La verdad es que hemos estado hablando bastante de este grupo noruego en este año que termina y no es para menos. Los Casiokids no sólo tienen una propuesta divertida, un pop electro-infeccioso y divertido reunido en una excelente producción, sino que además fueron los ganadores de un concurso organizado por los señores de A-ha, quienes decidieron, a la luz de su retiro, ayudar a una banda de su país a obtener los recursos para seguir grabando y construir una carrera internacional. Y la verdad es que ojala estos chicos utilicen el dinero sabiamente, pues el talento lo tienen, y para muestra sólo basta escuchar “En Vill Hest”, tema que como ya se habrán dado cuenta no nos cansamos de escuchar o recomendar.



5. The Black Atlantic



A esta banda la encontré por casualidad mientras leía una entrevista con el dueño de su disquera Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck, que tiene muy buenos grupos, entre ellos incluido el proyecto de Geert van der Velde quien, aunque comenzó con una banda de metal, hoy en día se dedica a hacer música pop, soñadora y por lo mismo mucho más interesante. El holandés y su banda lanzaron hace un año su álbum debut, lleno de temas pop/folk de intrincados arreglos y melancolía garantizada que conquistan a la primera escuchada. En su momento recomendamos dos canciones de ellos, una de ellas este tema llamado “Fragile Meadow”, no apta para oídos insensibles.



4. Kakkmaddafakka



El que en nuestra lista haya dos conjuntos noruegos tiene mucho que ver con el hecho de que una servidora es fan de la música escandinava, pero también con la innegable realidad de que, en esta parte del mundo, sus habitantes llevan años tomando los instrumentos y haciendo sus propias producciones independientes, mucho antes incluso de que se inventara la etiqueta “indie”, que hoy es util - Cuchara Sónica

Desde que iniciamos esta sección aquí en la Cuchara hace algunos meses, algunas personas nos han contactado para recomendarnos bandas y solistas de todas partes del mundo que podrían ser interesantes para nuestros lectores. Pues bien, el día de hoy tenemos una de estas recomendaciones como nuestra banda Under de la semana.

El grupo se llama The Great Wilderness y es originario de Costa Rica. El trío se formó apenas en 2009 y en su música exploran los ritmos del dream rock, alternativo y post punk para crear un sonido que recuerda a gente como Joy Division, Hole, The Raveonettes y Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Su primer EP se llama Afterimages of Glowing Visions, está compuesto por cinco temas y es un disco semiconceptual en el que destaca su excelente batería y una vibra ambient muy interesante. Sometimes the best and brightest comes from the most unlikeliest of places. Only by happenstance did we at Cannibal Cheerleader stumble upon Costa Rica’s The Great Wilderness but we quickly came to realize that the searing, flashing power and heartfelt, engaging musicality put them in a position to be among our favorites of the year. To listen to the Great Wilderness is to be welcomed into their rich, haunting, illusive, and fiery dreamworld. And with the release of 2010’s second EP Tiny Monsters, this femme-foursome has achieved our top artist of 2010 award, operating on a level so far and away from everyone else that it’s like discovering guitar-rock all over again with a simple spin of their dual-releases. Hearing the Great Wilderness is akin to joining alongside these women in their jangly, haunting journey of indie-rock artistry; it feels as if every song is ingrained within the listener’s brain with each piercing riff, pedal-stomped wail, or shimmering production. These ladies write the soundtracks to our subconscious.

If there’s a word to describe Tiny Monsters it’s snarling. Snarling not in the sense of some bombastic sprawling wonderwork like their first EP or tight and economical like a speedy punk record, but frothy and mean, all growling and surrounding like a pack of wolves, calculating and direct but nonetheless ravenous and fierce. The guitar-lines are piercing and wiry, articulate and sharp before careening into a flurry of pummeling riffs and splashing intensity. At times jangly and haunting, with a vivid dreamlike quality, Tiny Monsters sounds like a band nonetheless singular in method and direction, cascading tracks sliding effortlessly into one another, echoing from a stereo into the night. Standout tracks include the pummeling “Nicholas Cage” and crushing, lonely, and ultimately unforgettable “When In June”. A testament to art and originality in an era of musical clones and well-worn sounds, Tiny Monsters can only be described as a gift, a cool drink of water in a parched musical landscape, captured from an unlikely locale and sailing through space to land in our Austin, Texas soundscape.

If there’s a word to describe Afterimages of Glowing Visions it’s swirling. If Tiny Wilderness is taut and piercing like a pack of wolves AoGV is a cloud of smoke burning across the sky, massive and billowing, churning with lightning and crashing with thunder. The smoky sense of each track, wafting and bursting into each other like some burgeoning flame instantly sucks in the listener, intent to sift through and examine each explosive layer in the wall of fiery sound. Propelled by the sultry and thoughtful growl of Paola Rogue, the group wails and sears through equal parts strikingly riotous cataclysms of sound and intelligent, well-wrought moments of smoldering fury. Sure to draw comparisons to the Joy Formidable in their shattering delivery, the Great Wilderness distinguish with their tear-jerking propensity for emotion in the form of carnage, as each song is belted with such fervor as to seem after each track the instruments will be dashed to the floor with reckless abandon and the musicians will drift away, blood-soaked and grinning, never to return. Combine this record with Tiny Monsters and you have a singular, masterful discography at work from one of the most little-known and genuinely unappreciated bands on the planet.

Henry Rollins once said, “Will you do it when it’s not fun anymore?” referencing scores of artists who create music for something other than the sheer joy of creation, for the sake of art, whether that be for the money, the fame, the fun, or what have you. The Great Wilderness craft art and make music from nothing but their sheer will to create. Living in a third-world country where government-assistance for burgeoning artists is virtually non-existent these ladies have struggled and forged what combines to be the best release of 2010 by far. From hardship springs creativity, from creativity will undoubtedly spring success for the Great Wilderness. Expecting big things from this group in 2011 but even if they were never to release another piece of music again they’ve left us with the Afterimages of Glowing Visions/Tiny Monsters combo that will surely be appreciated for years to come. The Great Wilderness is a dream rock band from San José, Costa Rica influenced by British post punk, alternative rock and inspired by bands such as B.R.M.C., The Big Pink, M83, Joy Division and Sonic Youth.
The initial lineup was formed in 2009 when Paola Rogue (vox, guitar) and Andrea San Gil (drums) decided to carry on after the split of their previous act, Lolita Piñata. They were soon joined by Monserrat Vargas (bass), who had played with Paola in previous projects years back.
The group was joined by Jimena Torres as a second guitar in early 2010. With their lineup finally complete, they set on to record and self-release their first EP titled Afterimages of Glowing Visions, a 5 song semi-conceptual work based on a post-apocalyptic dream that evoques an exploration of one’s inner world.

Later the same year NOV 2010 the band released another EP [ Tiny Monsters ] ~ 6 songs EP linked by topics such as claustrophobia, anxiety and determinism.

And here goes another good listen. Straight down to shoegaze, no doubt about that. Those ladies are quite determined to provide waves of a celestial spheres and heavenly guitars with ethreal vocals.
