The Greg Levine Band

The Greg Levine Band

BandRockJazz

Our music is a mixture of rock, funk and jazz with literate lyrics and penetrating chord changes. It's 21st century Western world folk music. It's idiomatic, axiomatic and instamatic - it's music to tickle your brain and your feet.

Biography

The first song on our debut album typifies our approach to music. It's called "Kalahari". The lyrics are about an off-duty oil worker we met when we were playing a festival in Sarawak, Malaysia.

He was working on an oil rig in the middle of the South China Sea and he had a month off to live it up on dry land. He spent half the month in bars in Patpong, Bangkok, part of which included a 5 day binge of Jack Daniels and Viagra. He spent the other half of the month at a little hotel in Miri, because they have an all-girl Philipino top 40 act that play all night and then "accept gifts" in the early hours of the morning. The act is called "Kalahari".

The song is some sort of West African groove with a straight up funk section at the end. Audiences love it and never fails to get them shaking.

Our music is like that: it tells you a story and gets you tapping your foot. We're not trying to sell a particular style or image. Our goal is to entertain in the most universal way: engage with both the brain and the body.

Lyrics

I Dig You

Written By: Greg Levine

You’re a sophisticated lady
And I’m an over-literate tramp
My life’s been kind of shady
Now I’m a moth before your lamp

But how can I bear to speak it
When even insects sound cliched
The lamp was out before it was lit
Now there’s no cool way to say

No cool way to say
That life’s a lot less grey
In mostly minute ways
Just because

I dig you
It sounds a little vague
But at least it’s true
I dig you
No matter where or when or how
Oh yes I do

Now if you’re the Queen of Sheba
Nah, I’ve heard that one before
And “babe, you give me fever
Just doesn’t cut it anymore

So if the music of your breathing
Soothes my sleep until I pass
Or our moments are more fleeting
And you leave me staring at the stars

There's no cool way to say
That life’s a lot less grey
In mostly minute ways
Just because

I dig you
It sounds a little vague
But at least it’s true
I dig you
No matter where or when or how
Oh yes I do

But before you find me wanting
Hold on for just one sec
No age of grace and sighing
Could catch the poetry of your neck

Words cannot contain us
At most a shadowy ring of truth
The reality is the chorus
Which I hear when I’m with you

Now there's no cool way to say
That life’s a lot less grey
In mostly minute ways
Just because

I dig you
It sounds a little vague
But at least it’s true
I dig you
No matter where or when or how
Oh yes I do

Sunrise at Night

Written By: Greg Levine and Ben Ryan

I was surfing when I saw it
Though I don't remember where
The room was small and dimly lit
The waves were on the air

A cardboard cutout anchor man
An instant across the world
I was thinking about my tan
When suddenly the ether swirled

And now I see it in my dreams

Try and close my eyes
Or see the sun rise
In the middle of the night
Flowers blooming bright
Without the sunlight
In the middle of the night

Another flash of showbiz gleam
Their uniforms are tight with pride
He says, "Unroll my magic rug.
It's time to take him for a ride."

"What city are we above?
I can't see Ali Baba"
The night is dark and nothing stirs
And then the general bares his grin

And now I see it in my dreams

Try and close my eyes
Or see the sun rise
In the middle of the night
Flowers blooming bright
Without the sunlight
In the middle of the night

Dive toward the X below
The world has turned to black and white
It all explodes in dark grey snow
And now we fade into that terrible light

Far too soon there'll be nothing
Just another press release
The flying carpet starts to stall
And the sun tries to set in the east

And I've been taken for a ride

Try and close my eyes
Or see the sun rise
In the middle of the night
Flowers blooming bright
Without the sunlight
In the middle of the night

Set List

We usually play sets of 5 originals and 3 covers. It's a good mix between our own stuff and tunes people might already know. We're experienced musicians, we've got a lot originals and we know a lot of covers - so we can do any gig. The set we played last weekend was:

Hagiographia
Greenland
Come Together (Beatles)
Shadow Hand
Black Cow (Steely Dan)
Kalahari
One More Red Nightmare (King Crimson)
Sunrise at Night

When we choose covers we try to choose songs that people will know but that are also interesting to play, hence the mixture in the above set.
