The Grownups hit the Australian independent charts in the late 80s and early 90s with two singles (Into The Beyond and Snakebite) and a 4-track EP - but parted company before recording a full album. They've now reformed to complete that piece of unfinished business.

Biography

The Grownups hit the Australian indie charts in the late 1980s with two popular singles (Snakebite and Into The Beyond) and a 4-track EP (featuring She Sets Me On Fire). Despite growing critical acclaim and popularity, the band parted company before recording their debut album. Two years ago, The Grownups reformed to complete that unfinished business.

And complete it, they have. The Light-Filled Corner features a sprinkling of 20-year-old Grownups songs (completely contemporised) alongside a raft of brand new tracks. The result is a sweeping, eclectic mix of alt pop-rock portraits of characters and concepts.

During two years of production, the band merged a DIY mindset with the sharp-edged skills of musicians, engineers and producers from three continents. Amongst these are some of music’s biggest names, including mix engineers Chris Brown (Radiohead, Pink Floyd, The Beatles Anthology, etc) and Marco Migliari (Robert Plant, Crowded House, and others).

Bringing together a vast heritage of influences from Bruce Springsteen to Radiohead, from Billy Bragg to Jamie T, from The Clash to Bright Eyes, and from Elvis Costello to The Airborne Toxic Event, The Grownups have emerge as entirely themselves – mature, intelligent and passionate.

And, as an interesting side note, The Grownups' lead singer, Michael Wagner, is the father of Wil Wagner, the power-packed lead singer with The Smith Street Band - which means father and son have released debut albums in the very same year.

When I Discover You

Written By: The Grownups

What are you doing in there?
What and who and when and where?
What secret thing?
What secret sting?
What are you doing in there
where no one can see?
A secret plan
you plan to use to against me?

Well I will see through you
If that’s what I have to do
I’ll see right through you
And I’ll discover the truth
When I discover you

I will come in and I will break it down
I will hear you sing your silent sound
I will know before you can act it out
I’ll find the truth
You can have no doubt
I’ll stop you before you stop me
It will be my victory
It will
It will

Cos I will see through you
If that’s what I have to do
I’ll see right through you
And I’ll discover the truth
When I discover you

So I open the door
And there’s you sitting on the floor
So carefully
Wrapping a gift for me

Thick Skinned

Written By: The Grownups

You came roaring back to life
You came roaring back to life
Down the freeway, five gears,
Nothing but strife

You were the centre of good
We were the open two
You were the right thing
I knew I had to do

Of course you’re right
I realised
Then I slipped right back
behind my disguise

Cos you are you
And I am me
And you are everything
I hoped you would be

So it leaves me sad
It leaves me blue
It leaves me mad about
the way I left you

Thick skinned, I need to be
Thick skinned, I need to be
Thick skinned, I need to be
I cannot be this raw,
Anymore

Such pretty thoughts
Such pretty scenes
So much more than they could
ever have been

Now it’s 3 AM again
I wish I wasn’t here
I wish I could just click my fingers
and disappear

Cos you are you
And I am me
And you are everything
I hoped you would be

So it leaves me sad
It leaves me blue
It leaves me mad about
the way I left you

Thick skinned, I need to be
Thick skinned, I need to be
Thick skinned, I need to be
I cannot be this raw,
Anymore

So it leaves me sad
It leaves me blue
It leaves me mad about
the way I left you

Cos you are you
And I am me
And you are everything
I hoped you would be

You Are All

Written By: The Grownups

You took a long time to get home
Such a long time to get home
And it’s raining outside
Like it’ll rain forever

Inside the dreams of simple men
Are fading
As a simple man lies here
Waiting

And in that ugly-beautiful moment
When you finally realise
What you’ve got, and how quickly
You could lose it all

Cos you are all
You are all
You are all
You are all

And the pain that had defined us
is now hollow
As the pleasure that now binds us
grows

And in that awful-happy instant
You become what you’ve become
And nobody round here
Troubles you at all

I felt your heart beat yes
When you took on this whole mess

And the lights came on
When you started with your song

And the sky burned blue
Trying to keep in touch with you

And the time ran out
It ran out too soon

Cos you are all
You are all
You are all
You are all …

I Found the Border

Written By: The Grownups

I found the border
ragged hem
Where you begin
And I end

I found the border
hazy grey
where you mean everything
you say

I found the border
fraying ends
where your enemies
are also your friends

Waves crashed us
Maybe a hundred times
We clung to everything
Not over the sides

We crawled through trenches
[gritted in the gale]
We tasted the blood
[of the martyr’s nails]
We rose from inside
[our barricade]
Crushed by the fading
[hope that remained]
The little hope that remained
[the little hope that remained]

Then we found the border
scissored ledge
where peace begins
battle ends

We found the border
the picket fence
where experience discovers
it’s lost innocence

When our breath left us
One question remained
Would we just lie there
Or would we get up again

Well, we got up again
We got up again
We got up again
We got up again

Got up through the darkness
Up through the pain
Up through the night
That had no day
There was no day
There was no day
There was no day

Till we found the border
Razor’s edge
Where new beginnings meet
Those terrible ends

I found the border
Ragged hem
Where you begin and everything else
suddenly ends

It suddenly ends.
It just ends …

Suddenly I Love My Life

Written By: The Grownups

I said that she was pretty
The moment she was gone
But love will never get me
Well, even I was wrong

I thought that I would take her
But she has got me by the …
And I am weak as the day is long
And suddenly I love my life

I thought my friends were honest
And I was to be married
To a gang of single boys
Who turned out to be not much like me

Well I thought that I could stand up
But I fell down to the floor
I thought I was in for the night
You kicked me out and you slammed the door

I said, boy oh boy
I said, boy oh boy
I said, boy oh boy
Suddenly I love my life

Well I thought I’d met my match
But like so many others
She just fell, undone
And I just passed her by

So I can rule the world now
And no one here can touch me
But pride became my tripwire
And I fell, happily

I said, boy oh boy
I said, boy oh boy
I said, boy oh boy
Suddenly I love my life

Well, I thought my friends were honest
And I was to be married
To a gang of single boys
Who turned out to be not much like me at all

I thought that I could stand up
But I fell down to the floor
I thought I was in for the night
You kicked me out and you slammed the door

And I said, boy oh boy
I said, boy oh boy
I am face down in your gutter
And suddenly I love my life

I said, boy oh boy oh boy
Boy oh boy oh boy
I’ve got a mouthful of your garden
And suddenly I love my life

I said, boy oh boy oh boy
I said, boy oh boy oh boy
I said boy oh boy
Suddenly I love my life
Yeah

My Hideaway

Written By: The Grownups

I feel desperate some days
Feel like metal some days
She takes the red, takes the grey
Because she is my human hideaway

They expected us to wait
How can they expect us to play it their way
They’ve got another thing coming today
Because she is my human hideaway

You get fragile some days
You get sort of far away
I’m here to tell you, I’m here to stay
Because you are my human hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
You know, you are my human hideaway

I get angry some days
Don’t know why I feel this way
Gonna get you, we will get away
Cos you are my human hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
You know you are my human hideaway

I said that, some days are lonely days
You know that some days are lonely days
You know that some days are lonely days
Some days are lonely days, some days are lonely days, yeah but

These days are crazy days
You know that, these days they are crazy days
You know that, these days are crazy days
And I can’t wait to reach my hideaway!

Hideaway, hideaway
Cos you are my human hideaway
Hideaway, hideaway
You know, you are my human hideaway

You know, you are my human hideaway

I’ll be home tonight
It’ll be all right
I’ll be home tonight
I will be your human hideaway
Hideaway, Hideaway
I will be your human hideaway
I will be your human hideaway
