"The Guilty Ones - 'Conquer The World'"

A nice slice of psychedelic pop rock from The Guilty Ones here, who’ve just signed to Auditorious (BMG) and release their first single on 28th of July. Up-beat, powerful stuff taken from the forthcoming Conquer The World EP which has had some decent praise from industry sectors, but we’re not entirely sold on the husky vocals and juxtaposed genres – there’s something that doesn’t quite gel about this, but a promising start none-the-less and could make decent headway at radio. - Glasswerk Magazine

"The Guilty Ones: First Your Stereo, Then The World"

It appears that the Guilty Ones are happy to take their time. The London-based band are preparing to drop their debut single, Conquer The World, on July 28 after nearly a year cooped up in a recording studio, and it's a huge, glossy pop song driven on by the idiosyncratic vocals of frontwoman Liv Slania.

During their marathon recording session, the band didn't want for advice. Behind the desk they had a brain trust – including Rupert Hine, Alex Beitzke and Bob Ludwig - with previous experience at the helm of records from Stevie Nicks, Underworld, Paul Weller, Radiohead, Nirvana and Bruce Springsteen. For Slania and her young band, their words proved to be vital.

“It was very, very important,” she said. “Having somebody there with so much experience to guide us, we felt we were in very safe hands. Very often, especially in creative environments, you can doubt yourself because there are so many options. They're practically infinite.

“It's hard to know what the right choice, the right sound, the right part is. Sometimes the brain just freezes and you don't know what to choose. Every day we would learn from them about what to do and the main lesson was not to overthink things. That's kinda hard. Don't think, play instead.”

The record was co-produced by the band's guitarist, Jo Pereira, and they also had to battle with the pressures that a 12-month stint in the studio wrought on their relationships.

“It's not only perspective on what you had to do, it's also the people,” Slania said, “You're with each other 24/7 in such an involved, emotional process, you just want to bite each other's heads off, you know? That was a tough one, a rollercoaster of feelings and opinions.”

The band were keen to take things slow once they hit the studio and were determined to wring new inspiration from their surroundings, whether in the form of new instrumentation or arrangements, despite having a slate of material already written prior to the sessions.

“We're quite a precise band,” Slania said. “If we did it really quickly, in one take, two takes, next, next next, we wouldn't have had time to experiment. That was the great thing, the great luxury. There are some weird instruments and sounds.”

During the recording process, one serendipitous moment also allowed the band to add an extra layer to a couple of tracks. With cash flow issues at the forefront of their mind, they struggled to find a string section to round out their sound. Enter James Dean Bradfield, frontman of Manic Street Preachers. Having heard snatches of the record, he offered the Guilty Ones his north Wales studio and string section to complete the picture.

“He really liked a song called All There Is, and later, while we were recording another song, Heartbeat, we were like, 'shit, we've run out of money to record a string section'," Slania said. "It's quite expensive to have the whole orchestra recording for you, and we're not Madonna. He was like, 'just use my string section, use my string arranger and my studio to record it'. The strings that are on the EP are thanks to him.”

"New band: The Guilty Ones - London-based purveyors of euphoric pop-rock"

The buzz so far: Euphoric, cloud-soaring pop rock with the sort of choruses, courtesy of vocalist Liv, that take up residence in your head for days on end.

That’s what this new London outfit deliver with the lead single of their forthcoming EP, Conquer The World.

Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield was so impressed with the snippets he heard as they laid down tracks in the studio, he offered them use of the Manics’ string section and their north Wales studio. Conquering the world might very well be on the cards.

"Interview: The Guilty Ones"

If the name ‘The Guilty Ones’ isn’t enough to get you curious about the four piece collective, their music certainly will. Having unveiled the visuals to their forthcoming debut major label release ‘Conquer The World’ just a few weeks ago, the London hailing band are gearing up to do exactly what it says on the tin.

I had a chat with songwriters Liv and Joe, who met while at Goldmith’s University, to discuss their 1960’s and 70’s influenced psychedelic pop sound, their dislike for the term ‘mainstream’ and how being in a band is “the same as being in a relationship, without sex.”

“Joe and I ended up in the same class [at Goldsmith’s] and were very bad influences on each other,” giggles lead singer and songwriter Liv. “Instead of going to classes and learning about music theory, we decided to just play music and be the free and cool musicians,” she says.

Asked if they had learnt anything in the years they attended University before eventually dropping out, the pair dissolve into laughter. “We learnt a little bit, but I generally learnt what not to do,” says Liv. “I’m not dissing music school at all,” interjects Joe. “But when you’re in there you become kind of restricted,” he adds. “They put too much emphasis on the actual theory, and writing a song is really not about theory and rules, it’s about getting rid of those rules.”

And what are the benefits of breaking those rules? An ever evolving sound that births tracks the likes of the begging-for-the-replay-button ‘Conquer The World.’
“We started off very retro, we were very kind of 60s orientated,” says Joe, guitarist, songwriter and producer of the band. “We’re big fans of The Doors; we were trying to kind of be the female Doors version… I don’t know… there was a mutation somehow and we ended up where we are now.”

“To me it was actually quite sudden,” says Liv. “We had a little bit more kind of 60’s, 70’s sound, then I went away to Stockholm for a bit and I came up with some vague ideas for songs and I presented them to Joe and he started working on them in a slightly different way… the arrangement was totally different to what he had done up till then.”

“I think it was at the time that Kings Of Leon released… not their last album but the one before the last,” says Joe, on what inspired him to approach the production so differently. “I just wanted to do something a little bit in the same style… not copying, but emulating that kind of more rocky, poppy, gritty sound rather than the retro sound,” he explains. “It came out very naturally.”

This evolution of character and sound is reportedly facilitated by the legendary Rupert Hines (Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner and etc), who is overseeing the band. “It’s really just his philosophy that blows me away,” says Joe. “He’s a very old school kind of producer and he lets the band be the best that the band can be, if you know what I mean… He doesn’t tell us how to be or what to do or anything like that, he just really makes you feel comfortable in what you are and who you are so you can do what you do at the best of your abilities,” he explains.

Having recently released the animated visuals to ‘Conquer The World,’ the band are currently gearing up to the release of the single, and figuring out what to do next. “Right now we’re trying to sort everything out… basically now we can take a slightly more edgy route which would be to release ‘Crusader Army’ next, or we can go a bit more…” trails Liv, struggling to find a word that adequately describes what she’s trying to say, without using the dreaded “mainstream.”

“We want to have a mixture of both,” interjects Joe, when asked which is the route they’re keener to take. “I’d be lying if I said I don’t want our music to reach crazy amounts of people, of course, we all want that when you’re a musician,” he says.

“But you want to keep some of your integrity. You want to have a bit of both, otherwise you might as well just stay in your bedroom making music.”

"Music Week Presents: The Guilty Ones"

Based in London, The Guilty Ones have been busy lately recording their new material, under the guidance of Auditorius/BMG Chrysalis.

Consisting of Liv (vocalist/songwriter), Jo (guitarist/songwriter), Manuel (drummer), Oded (keyboard player) and Oded's infamous, synth-bass playing, left hand called "Dedde", the four (and a half) piece present a larger than life sound that reaches beyond their numbers.

The band's debut single Conquer The World - to be released at the end of July - is said to sound like a mix-up of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and The Flaming Lips, demonstrated by the husky vocals, distinctive synth-bass noise and leftfield indie pop flair. The related music video is a fully animated sci-fi tale.

The recording of Conquer The World was supervised by the legendary Rupert Hine (Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner, Underworld), at the Olympic Studios under Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones, INXS, Duran Duran), with the mastering overlooked by Bob Ludwig and Adam Ayan (Coldplay, Radiohead, The Strokes).

The Guilty Ones have collected a great live following so far, plus 14,000 likes on Facebook without an official release.

"On Deck: The Guilty Ones- Interview"

Recently, Liv and Jo sat down for Beats Per Minute to discuss some of their favorite records. Eschewing the typical “greatest hits” list, they’ve opted to discuss artists and records which they’ve OD’d on lately. Ranging from Pharrell Williams to Fleetwood Mac, the two cover four decades worth of musical history in a short period of time. As they describe why they favor these particular artists, it’s easy to see where these artists fit into The Guilt Ones’ overall sound—yes, even Pharrell Williams. "The Guilty Ones - Conquer The World [NEW SINGLE]"

A London based outfit, The Guilty Ones have been extensively touring the UK and are releasing their new single Conquer The World through Auditorius/BMG Chrysalis. Lifted from their forthcoming EP of the same name, this sees The Guilty Ones teaming up with renowned producers such as Rupert Hine, Dave Eringa and Mike Crossey.

Certainly going all in on the epic melodic pop front, this is a bombastic and infectious sounding taste of what The Guilty Ones are capable of. Building from subdued sounding beginnings where a muted guitar chugs gently alongside soft vocals, Conquer The World builds to a soaring pop crescendo as singer Olivia croons triumphantly over crashing guitar chords and sweeping string arrangements.

Though the whole thing is imbued with a certain Eurovision Song Contest like cheesiness in its sweeping choruses and triumphant lyrical proclamations, Conquer The World is still an arresting sounding single from The Guilty Ones that is short, catchy and incredibly bombastic. - Festival Diaries

"THE GUILTY ONES - CONQUER THE WORLD [NEW SINGLE]"

London four-piece The Guilty Ones are involved with music publishing big hitters BMG Chrysalis, home to the likes of Blondie and Fleet Foxes, so things are looking good for them already. And on the basis of their forthcoming "official debut single", 'Conquer The World', they look like they could do just that. Listen below.

For those in the know, much has been made of the band's psychedelic and rock influences but they don't make too much of an appearance on 'Conquer The World'. Instead, it comes across like a pleasing synth-pop version of Enya. 'Conquer The World' is a soaring offering driven by Liv Slania's arresting vocals. Having worked with all kinds of well-known producers, including Dave Eringa and Rupert Hine, we expect similarly top notch stuff from The Guilty Ones in the near future. - Faded Glamour

"The Guilty Ones – Conquer The World – Single Review"

Liv’s voice is so infectiously beautiful it metaphorically sends you to your happy place in a little row boat.
Now if there is something I love about music, it is the way that sounds from a different era can be fused with sounds from this era. This is exactly what this band achieves.

They revive the very best of the 60’s and 70’s and enlighten it with a modern twist of psychedelic pop. The NY Times Magazine quote that ‘Vocalist Liv will sweep through your soul; with a voice so magnetic that you’d follow her every word down the darkest of backstreets…What a great find.’

The Guilty Ones have just returned after an extensive touring schedule, gigging throughout the UK to promote their sound. Conquer The World is the first taste of music from this quartet, they will be releasing and EP titled Conquer The World in the future and I will definitely be eager to listen to the rest of their music.

After listening to this song several times now, my initial thought is still the same; it’s songs like this that were made for the summer. With a catchy chorus and simple lyrics, I can picture myself lying in a field relaxing and listening to the blend of synth bass notes and desirably beautiful vocals.

The Secret Sound Shop also quotes on the lead vocal by saying ‘Liv’s voice is so infectiously beautiful it metaphorically sends you to your happy place in a little row boat.’

Conquer the World is going to be a big hit, with an Indie flair to it, it is just one of those songs that will never fail to put me in a good mood. Sweet and soothing like a lullaby, the song would create an even fuller effect if I listened to it live.

Building from subdued sounding beginnings where a muted guitar gently sits alongside soft vocals, Conquer The World rises to a soaring pop crescendo as the lead singer belts triumphantly over crashing guitar chords and sweeping string arrangements.

I am definitely hooked; I can’t wait to hear the next music instalment from this London quartet.

Evoking the shinny 70s pop of Fleetwood Mac, with psychedelic undertones 'Conquer The World' is an irresistable and magentic indication of what is to come from the band.

Lead singer Liv takes centre stage with her bold, husky voice, tuned perfectly to the percussive melodies of the track.

The band have certainly been gaining attention on high places with the single released through Auditorius/BMG Chrysalis, the home of Frank Ocean and Tame Impala. On hearing the band in the studio Manic Street Preacher's front-man James Dean Bradfield offered them the use of his band's string section which added stunning string arrangements to some of the tracks.

Catch these guys live if you can and in the mean time give their new single a listen and hold on for their EP, soon to be released. - The National Student

"The Guilty Ones - 'Conquer The World'"

The band's debut single 'Conquer The World' - to be released at the end of July – is said to sound like a mix-up of Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks and The Flaming Lips, demonstrated by the husky vocals, distinctive synth-bass noise and leftfield indie pop flair. The related music video is a fully animated sci-fi tale - Alt Sounds

"The Guilty Ones Conquering on Top 5 Tracks of the week"

I get music submissions in my inbox. Some are good. Most are whack. The Guilty One’s debut offering ‘Conquer The World’ however captured my attention, and it’s been on repeat pretty much ever since

Evoking a ‘70’s vibe, complete with psychedelic undertones and vocals from magnetic lead singer, Liv, the aptly entitled track suggests that the London-based group will soon be doing just that. - Live Magazine

Bio

Based in London, The Guilty Ones have extensively been playing all the credible gigging circuits around the UK – after a fruitful studio sabbatical they are now ready to release their infectious new single ‘Conquer The World’ through Auditorius/BMG Chrysalis, home of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, FrankOcean, TameImpala and Bruno Mars. This track is just a small taste of what you can expect to hear from this great live band.

The Guilty Ones are being overseen and produced by the legendary Rupert Hine (Stevie Nicks,Tina Turner, Howard Jones, Underworld); co-produced by their guitarist Jo and Alex Beitzke (EdSheeran, Paul Weller, Foster The People, Jamiroquai) with the mastering being overlooked by Bob Ludwig (Radiohead, Guns'n'Roses, Madonna, Coldplay, Nirvana and BruceSpringsteen).

The single "Conquer The World" is taken from their forthcoming EP simply called ‘Conquer TheWorldEP‘, and iconic producers such as Dave Eringa (ManicStreet Preachers, Idlewild) and MikeCrossey (Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight) have already contributed to the bands various studio cuts.

James Dean Bradfield (Manic StreetPreachers, lead vocalist) got to hear The Guilty Ones laying down tracks in their studio. He then kindly offered them the use of the Manic’s string section and their North Wales studio complex where the 'Guilties' added some stunning string arrangements to a few of their tracks
