The Heartbroken

“Imagine Bowie and Johnny Cash meet for a drink at Willie Nelson’s bar and Linda Ronstadt tries to pick a fight with them.”

There’s a new band in town but the members are no strangers to Canadian audiences. They call themselves The Heartbroken and they’ve been making music together for so long, that they can’t remember when they decided to form a band. They will admit that it must have happened around a kitchen table when they were sitting around sharing stories (sad, happy, crazy – and some of them even true) that were meant to be songs. The multi-award winning Damhnait Doyle and stellar drummer, Blake Manning, share vocal duties while Stuart Cameron and Peter Fusco round out the band’s sound on guitar and bass guitar. The songwriting collaboration between these four talents have produced standout songs that are both rootsy and heartfelt, combining the sentiment of alt country with the very best in pop hooks. The Heartbroken made their debut at the ECMA Awards Show in Newfoundland in March 2009 which was followed by 7 nights of standing ovations at the Newfoundland Labrador Arts & Cultures across the province. They returned to Toronto where they played the Luminato Festival for The Great Canadian Song Event. Since then, The Heartbroken have been writing and demoing for their debut recording.

Damhnait Doyle
Born and raised in Newfoundland-Labrador, Damhnait grew up listening to Willie Nelson and Linda Ronstadt. Discovered while singing at her day job in a record store, she has gone on to make three solo records, two records with the group Shaye and, most recently, a cover record with musical compatriot, Danny Michel. A versatile artist and songwriter, Damhnait has published a book, written songs for TV shows and numerous other artists, writes a weekly newspaper column, and has served as host for a variety of events. Damhnait has travelled to Afghanistan twice to entertain the troops and has been to Africa to shoot a documentary for “The Song For Africa”. Her powerful and distinctive voice can be heard on the recordings of many of Canada’s finest artists.

Blake Manning
Blake attributes his love of playing music to his beloved grandfather – a modest farmer who found great pleasure drumming at kitchen parties and annual hometown parades. Little did his grandfather know that his love of music would jumpstart the career of one of the most sought after touring and session drummers in the country. As a kid, Blake was particularly attracted to the hard-driving rhythms of bands like The Police and the Clash. By age 14, he took to the stage for his first professional engagement and he hasn’t looked back. He has mastered the drums, guitar and bass and is an exceptional vocalist. He has recorded alongside legendary RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson, has toured extensively with David Wilcox, Mathew Good Band, Shaye, and has recorded with Justin Rutledge, Jill Barber, Jesse Cooke, and Alfie Zappacosta to name just a few. Whether taking a Dobro lesson, plunking on a Sitar, or performing in-front of stadium crowds, Blake Manning continues to relish new musical experiences and to live the dream that started one afternoon with his grandfather’s makeshift snare drum.

Stuart Cameron
Stuart grew up just outside of Toronto and spent much of his childhood in Cape Breton. Born into a musical family, Stuart is the son of the legendary John Allan Cameron. Surrounded by music, this natural born entertainer started performing for family and friends at a very young age. At the age of 7, Stuart picked up a guitar and started singing and he hasn’t stopped since. By the time Stuart started playing guitar professionally in 1993, he was already a veteran performer. He has toured the world twice over and has recorded extensively with such renowned artists as Ashley MacIsaac, Crash Test Dummies, Amanda Marshall, Matthew Good, John Allan Cameron, George Canyon and Shaye. Stuart continues to perform, produce and write in a variet
