"Artist of the month"

The Hemingway Solution were the featured artist for May 2005 for the CD ROM magazine the Concrete Chronicles. They appear in the section "labs" a spin off of MTV's cribs. The 20 min hilarious video interview takes you on a tour of the boys house in the beaches of Toronto, out of where they operate "project mayhem" (first rule do NOT ask questions). - Concrete Chronicles

"The Hemingway Solution on stage at the Opera House"

The Opera House… a great venue to watch live music. Low house lights, bright and colorful stage lights, balcony and floor seating; it sets the mood for a rocking party perfectly. On April 10th 2004 The Opera House hosted the Underdog’s Ball, an excellent opportunity for local bands to showcase their best stuff in front of an audience.

Some of Ontario’s finest showed up to entertain us that night. The roster included Doron, Coolex, Straight Goods, Catching Fire, Undercurrent Suburbia, Lucid, Dante, Flatlined, 3Dogfunhouse, Flying Public, Downflow, and The Hemingway Solution, which in my opinion, is one of the bands that will not be an underdog for much longer. They hail from Mississauga, Ontario and have only been together for a short time, but separately have been in the music biz for years. They put on an interesting live show full of energy and passion; you can tell they love it up there on stage! Coming right from the horses’ mouth (not literally of course!) their music can be described as melodic rock with an attitude and a shot of tequila, I’d say that about sums it up! "Hemingway Solution: A killer band"

When famed American author Ernest Hemingway committed suicide for reasons unknown on July 2, 1961, he could never have guessed his demise would inspire a suburban rock band four decades later. Mississauga's The Hemingway Solution admit their name, which alludes to suicide, might be considered in poor taste...but they just don't care. The name holds a different and personal meaning to them. "We know the name comes from suicide but (to us) it means it's do-or-die time with the band," said vocalist and guitarist Dave Guthrie. "We felt we had to be more real with ourselves if we want to take (the band) to the next level."

Originally part of the pop-rock act Rubber Souls, Guthrie and guitarist George Niculescu left the band to focus on forming a "dirtier" new act. After adding George's brother Pete on drums, The Hemingway Solution was born.

They recorded a three-song demo (Cellophane, Burn and One Day) at Toronto's Arnyard Studios in January. The band is heading into Gas Station Recordings at the end of this month for a follow-up, seven-song EP. Hoping to capture a gritty and raw sound, and get away from the over produced and polished pop sound, the band specifically chose Gas Station for their analog equipment. To put things into perspective, The White Stripes used analog devices when recording their ground breaking, garage rock sound. Homegrown two-piece act The Inbreds record at Gas Station.

The Hemingway Solution draws on influences like Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead when composing music.

"The Hemingway boys are back in town"

June 5, 2007 - The guys in Mississauga's The Hemingway Solution are back and looking forward to showcasing their upcoming new album at the 2007 North By Northeast music festival.
The band took some time off, and since getting back together, they believe their sound has improved and matured.
"By taking a break, we've grown as individuals," said bassist Dave Guthrie. "Our sound has changed and evolved. It's energized."
The band, rounded out by drummer Pete Niculescu as well as vocalist and guitarist George Niculescu, hasn't quite finished the four-track album. However, the track That 60's Pop Tune is currently available for preview by visiting www.myspace.com/thehemingwaysolution.
The album is a follow-up to the band's full-length debut, Life Sold Separately. It's being recorded with Brian Moncarz (The Junction).
The band will perform at Holy Joe's Friday night at midnight as part of the North By Northeast music festival. The festival runs Thursday through Sunday and features 450 bands playing more than 30 different venues in Toronto.
"We played (NXNE) last year and we use it as the (measuring) stick in terms of where we're at in our music careers," said Guthrie. "Our team has grown, we've grown and we're stronger musicians. We're excited about the show."
Other bands with ties to Mississauga performing at the festival include:
• Basia Lyjak at The Annex Wreckroom on Saturday at 8 p.m.
• In Essence's Dru (who's set to release his solo album The One next month) at Rock on Saturday at 1 a.m.
• Five Blank Pages at The Drake Hotel on Thursday at 10 p.m.
• Sebastien Grainger (formerly of Death From Above 1979) at The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern on Saturday at 11 p.m.

Bio

Born and raised in Mississauga, we have come a long way in the four years we have been playing together. Armed with our debut EP, we have been fortuneate enough to travel across North America doing what we love most, and have enjoyed playing such notable places as: the Opera House and Lee's Palace (Toronto), the Note (Chicago), Room 5 (Los Angeles), CBGB's (New York) as well as appearing the last two years at the North by NorthEast Music Festival in Toronto. The Hemingway Solution have garnered airplay from campus radio, SIRIUS Satellite, as well as Toronto’s major rock station CFNY 102.1FM.

For us three friends/brothers, taking risks and finding help along the way has always been a part of our journey. This was never more evident than on that one day when we ran out of gas with depleted funds in Twin Falls, Idaho without any idea of how we would get home. There we were, unannounced and desperate, as we walked into an Idahoan coffee shop. After getting the attention of all its patrons, we explained our dilemma of being stranded in an unknown town. “Would anyone like to purchase our album in exchange for gas money?” we pleaded. A painful silence followed... and then, suddenly, the bartender who had been leaning nonchalantly, arms crossed against the counter, proclaimed “Sure. Ill take one”. And then, incredibly, the previously peaceful coffee shop erupted into a frenzy of people thrusting money into our hands, allowing us to sell enough CD’s to get home.

For The Hemingway Solution, it’s all just another challenge; “good under the gun” as we like to say. Self proclaimed as the ‘world’s smartest idiots’, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
