The High Life

The bay state (that’s Massachusets, y’all) is abuzz with the sound of our very own super group/collective, The High Life. The new EP, Iller, with production from The Arcitype is raw, smart, fun–and also pretty good. Members Fran P, Vice Versah, Dominick Omega and Carolina Black took time off from their respective solo careers to collaborate on this project, which is currently streaming and available for download via their website. When it comes to being heard (and remembered) these days, there’s much more than having something worthwhile to say. Don’t get it twisted though, that aspect is incredibly important! But to keep the attention of today’s ADD generation you also need a canvas to vibe to, quality visuals to match the music, an engineer that knows what he’s doing (shouts to the homie Ali) and more. All these factors come into play with the Massachusetts-based group The High Life.

Rebecca Gwynne — a really good young editor — sent me this new video from some hip hop artists I didn't know before. The artists are The High Life and they seem like they're really psyched to be doing this video, so it put me in a good mood. The video's directed by Toshiki Yoshiro. Mike Frazier is the editor, and I like his style here.

Is the song gonna make you sing it? Prob not, but it's still good, and I like these guys' energy.

Makes me think for the ***** project we're working on (hint: it's a soft drink), we should let the emerging hip hop community know we could use some music for the campaign. Like in mtvU days, we'd probably get thousands of songs, and some would be killer, and we'd blast those out wide.

I got a nice surprise this weekend when I came across the latest video from AR Classics crew members The High Life. The High Life is comprised of Viceversah who has been spotlighted a number of times here on Potholes, along with emcees Carolina Black, Dominik Omega, Fran-P, and producer The Arcitype. King Kong props to Viceversah, The Arcitype, and their High Life crew for a dope video release party at their Cambridge studio last week (place is sick, by the way). Arc is one of the most consistent producers in Boston – he recently handled XL’s Sam Adams dis – and “We Came to Rock” is no exception.
