"The HippoCampus Peppier than Average Jams"

"I'm more vexed than most by central CT's glut of jam bands. And I've always been pretty critical of the way cover bands have cornered the market in a lot of Hartford-area venues. So I was a little miffed when The HippoCampus put on a set that was like a perfect hybrid of both styles. It's like the band was genetically engineered to fill two of Hartford's most profitable niches. In terms of musicianship, they're good: they know how to play to a crowd, and their drummer Neil's peppy fills prevent a lot of their songs from wandering into Wankville. Still, I can't help but feel more than a little marketed to."

Kind of a strange and confusing review.

Bio

From long spacey buildups, to short intense peaks, The HippoCampus brings high energy trance jams like few other electonic bands can. With their unique approach to song writing/jamming and a HUGE sound, intense, long rollercoaster jams provide any improvisational music fan with intense beats to dance to all night long. Every HippoCampus show is sure to feature mostly original songs, with nostalgic, but fresh covers that interweave between their repertoire and leave any music fan in a state of euphoria.
Ray Clark and Tom McBreen starting playing together at age 13. When they turned 18, they asked longtime childhood friend, Neil Douglass, to become their drummer. This lineup originally performed as "Colonel K." After much debate, the band changed their sound from standard jam rock to progressive electronic jam rock and became "The HippoCampus." In 2009, keyboardist Pat Simone became interested in joining the band after witnessing a mind blowing performance when the band opened for The New Deal in December 2008. He quickly contacted the band and has brought a whole new, definitive element to the HippoCampus ever since. The band continues to play sporadic shows throughout the New England area, but is continuously writing new material to bring the music to a new level. Each performance continues to build and leave a lasting performance on the growing fanbase. Look for a new live album soon.

The HippoCampus have shared the stage with: The New Deal, The Indobox, Future Rock, Psylab, DJ Haitian, Otherwise, Wounded Buffalo Theory, DJ Breakadawn, DJ Snafu, DJ Joe E Crak, and Jeff Bujak
