Biography

Does the world really need another Soul band? James Black (RocKwiz) will tell you that the answer is "Yes!" but it’s gotta be The Hiptones! Their sound is a blend of Roots and Blues with a powerful pop songwriting sensibility.

Like all great bands, The Hiptones is an organic creation much greater than the sum of its parts. Over the last 7 years an eclectic group of musicians came together from the " roots" music scene in Adelaide, South Australia. The Hiptones grew and coalesced into the current lineup of Snooks La Vie on Vocals, Brother T on Hammond and bass, Adam Pringle on guitar and Mark Chewey on the skins.

For some reason, all the great towns that create roots music are never the biggest cities. It is something about being away from the centre of the commercial music industry. Think Memphis, Austin, Nashville and New Orleans (The Hiptones favourite) . One day when the rest of the world is exhausted from the current fads – real music comes through and has its day. It seems like that time is now for The Hiptones.

While there are lots of bands that have their roots in the blues, there are few with a singer as good as Snooks La Vie. Less with a band that can entertain a crowd in a bar for five hours straight and even fewer that can write songs as good as the blues and soul classics that inspired them. The Hiptones is a roots band that can play with a style of their own and they write like they play.

They cruise around in a ’62 T-Bird, wear funky retro clothes and play obscure vintage instruments. They listen to music most people have never heard of, but what they create together is very cool, very real and totally hip.In these days of artifice and contrivance The Hiptones are a band that truly care about the music. There has never been an air of despair about this band. These are 4 guys who consistently go all out to play to a room full of people keen to forget the week’s work and grind and dance to music that speaks to the mind and the body.

The Hiptones sound is a gumbo of the roots music with a pop sensibility. Out front is Snooks, a white soul singer with an incredibly powerful voice. Brother T drives the bass and Hammond organ deftly bridging the gap between retro funk and new soul. Adam Pringle lays down sublime guitar also being able to provide that Atlantic R&B funk attack and Mark on the skins, can do it all.

Their debut album Right Now is particularly special given that it brought the Hiptones to the attention of a major label – SONYBMG. That’s extraordinary given that all the vocal takes are first and only takes, and the entire album was recorded and mixed in four days at Woodstock studios with James Black producing during a Melbourne heatwave in January 2006. Hot from the start, the Hiptones debut full-length album is a set of songs stripped back to their essence.

The album charted at No. 24 in the prestigious US LIVING BLUES Magazine - September 2008.

Can't get you off my mind

Written By: Narmon Tulsi and Paul Wimbles

I can see it in your eyes - Its different when you smile
And I can feel the truth is taking hold of me – yeah

I know you – been thinking hard about it
And baby you can read between my lies – yeah

It’s not the same – the way you tell me that you love me mm mm
But I’m to blame for tearing us apart

Aah aah aah …

I can feel it in your touch - I know that look on your face
The truth is in your eyes – I can feel it everyday

Can’t you see – baby I been thinking about you day and night
I can’t let go – Can’t get you off my mind – oh no

Aah aah aah…
Can’t get you off my mind etc…

Mm mm mm mm …
a
Can’t you see – baby I been thinking about you day and night
I can’t let go – Can’t get you off my mind – oh no

Aah aah aah…
Can’t get you off my mind etc…

I saw the light

Written By: Narmon Tulsi and Paul Wimbles

I felt your touch – it was just too much
I turned to look – but you were gone
Well I miss your face – and your amazing grace

Now I’ve seen the dark – but i saw the light
Cause the light came shining through

When I close my eyes – I can feel your smile
With the cool of the summer breeze
I wish you well – and only time will tell

I’ve seen the dark – but i saw the light
Cause the light came shining through

I can feel the pain – come creeping back again
If I think about it – too long
But nothing that I said – could change the things you did

I’ve seen the dark – but i saw the light
Cause the light came shining through

So many times – I tried to tell you
You turned your back to walk away – yeah
Lord help me find an answer
See the truth – Find another way

I miss your face – and your warm embrace
Your tenderness, love… and care
Now I know the reason why – you had to leave me though you tried
I’ve seen the dark – but i saw the light
Cause the light came shining through

I’ve seen the dark – but I saw the light
Cause the light came shining through

I’ve seen the dark – but I saw the light
Cause the light came shining through

Something's gotta give

Written By: Narmon Tulsi and Paul Wimbles

Baby it’s been ten long years since we first met
On Brunswick Street Fitzroy – darlin’ how could I forget
Well you were sitting in the corner of the room
When I first laid my eyes on you – you had long black wavy hair…. and it was all right
Right then I know I had to have your love – right then I know I had to have your love

Well ten years passed by so fast – I thought I love would last
But I came home this morning and all our furniture was gone
Baby why couldn’t we have talked a while
Baby why did you have to leave – and you never even said goodbye
Oh baby why did you have to leave me – darlin’ why’d you have to go – and you never even said goodbye
‘Cause baby I know that ….

Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give now baby – now I know – something’s gotta give

You know I told you baby – girl it ain’t no lie
But now you’ve gone and left me baby – I feel like I could cry – you know

Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give now baby – now I know – something’s gotta give

I tried to call you on the phone but your mother says your not at home
But your room Iight is on and your cars in the driveway baby
Where have been and who you been seeing
I don’t care – I don’t care – just as long as you bhring your fine self back home again
Baby why couldn’t we have talked awhile – baby why did you get up and leave
You know you never even said goodbye – now baby I know

Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give
Something’s gotta give now baby – now I know – something’s gotta give
