The best kept secret in music

"The Hollows Rock out!"

The Hollows NOW Lounge January 28, 2006 With melodic undertones reminiscent of Zuckerbaby and Maroon 5, though not as saccharine, The Hollows kept their rock heartbeat strong during Saturday night's performance at the NOW lounge. The Toronto based independents, have been a band for a while, but in the current configuration only a short time. They added a twelve string acoustic for flavour, that interestingly did not get lost in the otherwise plugged in mix. Their radio ready songs kept audiences in a great mood with lyrics that everyone can smile along to. The ripped up exposed brick as the backing for the band added to their relatability, making it feel like you were hanging out in your best friend's basement and kept that rock and roll feeling going. The relaxed atmosphere made it easy to feel like you were discovering a band that lived down the block that you couldn't believe were just down the street. Maintaining audience attention with sarcastic banter between songs, the only really disappointing thing was their short forty minute set. Things can only get better for these talents. You can catch The Hollows at Sneaky Dee's on February 23.

Feeling a bit camera shy

Two founding members, David Browne and Steve Court grew up in a Toronto suburb and began sharing ideas about art and music as children. The Hollows are a culmintation of an undying partnership and nine years of songwriting. Dave and Steve met Coz three years ago in a unique twist of fate when their vehicles collided on a busy downtown street. After a heated exchange, some damaged instruments led to a conversation about music and life. Shortly After, the three began to exchange musical ideas and formed a three piece power rock trio called The Hollows with Coz on drums, David on Vocals and guitars and Steve on Bass. The results were undeniable, with a buzz building, the band decided to expand to feature Coz on lead guitar, his primary instrument. After a short lived but productive run with a pinch hit drummer, The Hollows found current Drummer Jay Herdman who seemed to have a sixth sense of what the band needed. Their sound is a potent mix of poetic and reflective yet accesible lyrics, three way harmony laden melodies and bone crunching guitar tones layered with heavenly U2 like ostinatos. The Hollows take you on a true listening adventure, and their sincere and passionate live performances only add to their credibility. The band has been described as a mix of many infleunces including Jeff Buckley, Broken Social Scene, The Stills, Sloan and the The White Stripes.
