"The Hook Up S/T E.P."

THE HOOK UP s/t CD EP 2010 Debut CD from this relatively new trio from Montreal who mine late ‘60s/early ‘70s guitar psych territory and do it very well. This CD opens up with the long drawn out psych stomper “Elevation Time” where bassist Jaime wails like a young GRACE SLICK over the guitar cacophony. Next song, “Dialtones”, is a fuzzed out screaming psych pounder in which guitarist David handles the vocals. The rest of the CD is basically a mixture of these 2 styles and actually got the band signed to Ricochet Sound (THE GRUESOMES’ label) and a full length is due out when this ish of MZ goes to print. Live, this trio is totally wild as guitarist David spends as much time on the floor as he does on stage as he’s in constant motion, mopping the floor with his body!”
- Dave O'Halloran, Mongrel Zine #10

Bio

The Hook Up formed in the fall of 2009 with the singular mission of playing rock and roll the old way: through tube amps, drenched in reverb and grit; soaked with sweat and occasionally, blood. Their intention has always been to get dirty and not be “cool”. Inspired by the energy, sounds and performance antics of The Stooges, The Litter, Flamin’ Groovies, The MC5 and Thee Headcoats – to name a few... – the band has a sound rooted in 1960s garage and psychedelic without being retro. The trio began gigging in early 2010, playing as much as possible anywhere that would have them and quickly developed a reputation as a band that could consistently deliver the kind of rock show you don’t often see anymore. Guitarist David Gilbert is renowned for his ability to direct the band, while wailing a guitar solo, while spinning circles on his back, while drenched in sweat – not to mention his catchy as all hell songs. The thunderous and rock solid rhythm section features the ravishing Jaime Haraldson on bass and the staunch and uncanny Josh Peters on drums. Together the threesome put on a no-holds-barred show with everything from surf sounds to punk rock wailers rounded out with surprising three part harmonies and killer vocals by both Gilbert and Haraldson. In late summer 2010 The Hook Up released their self-recorded EP. They were quickly snapped up by Montreal indie label Ricochet Sound Recordings. Their full-length debut "Tomorrow & Today" was released in May 2011.?
