"Anthem Magazine"

Sound/Friends―a new New York City-based indie label―does exactly what it says: makes music for friends, supported by friends! So far, the collective has released a split 7" featuring the House Floor and Convoj, a Chubby Behemoth 7" EP, and, most recently, spectacular 12" LP by Mas Y Mas.

Each work sounds aesthetically different, but Sound/Friends is a tightly-knit label; every roster member feeds of and benefits from the energies and talents of the others, making the whole operation resemble a commune rather than a bureaucratic music-making company. - Anthem Magazine

"Faesthetic Magazine"

The Brooklyn-based Sound/Friends just released the Mas Y Mas full-length “Proud Sponsors of Pepsi.” Yes, I am friends with them, but I honestly think it’s one of the best releases of the year. Other releases are equally impressive (7″’s featuring The House Floor, Conjov, and Chubby Behemoth). If you are skeptical, you can listen to everything for free. Sound/Friends is organized by the amazing kids at Playlab, “an American Design Studio.” - Threadless

Lesser-known acts were also heavily attended and appreciated. Early Friday evening the House Floor, a Blacksburg band, played to a substantial crowd at Clementine.

""Tyrants!" on All Songs Considered"

Second Stage: The House Floor
by Meg Ruddick

There's a lot going on in The House Floor's music. The band's epic album, Warship, was recorded in Virginia in the spring of 2009. With just 10 songs, the album clocks in at over an hour, with most songs averaging a good six and a half minutes long. Lead singer and guitarist Alex Tschan's voice is reminiscent of Conor Oberst, and the breathy, quavering vocals make for an almost spoken-word, poetry reading feel. His imaginative lyrics stand out above the music, and make you wonder just what the heck he's talking about. Sharp guitars and an incredible rhythm section (Ryan Lee on bass and Peter Chudzik on drums) give the music its bite and make it really fun. The songs themselves move and shift constantly and remind me more of compositions than standard rock songs. "Tyrants!" seamlessly blends about three or four songs into one, transitioning at one point with a really fantastic freak-out about midway through.

The band's album is available for download on its Web site.

Bio

We’re committed to doing things differently. Starting with our Brooklyn–based, non-profit label, Sound/Friends (http://www.soundfriends.org), we aim to bypass the standard profit-based industry format by creating and releasing music in the pursuit of positive, community-based change (Project #1: http://www.pielab.org). We’re a family of friends, not egos. Everyone involved contributes to releasing the records. We love what we do.

Since our first release in 2006 a series of events steered our lineup and writing in a new direction. Our debut full-length album, entitled "Warship", is out now and available for free download on our website or as a double-LP.

Alex (also known as ALL FOX released a 7" split this year - 2009 - with Kristofer Astrom, the singer from Swedish band, FIRESIDE) met Peter and Ryan in university and have been best friends since. We live in a loft in Bushwick, sleeping in bunk beds under a cave-like build-out to afford the cost-of-living here---a price we're more than willing to pay to be immersed in the creative energy here.

We made a weighty record with "Warship", but we believe in it so much. We truly appreciate you giving us a listen and a chance.

Love,
The House Floor
