The IF

From the remains of two local Rhode Island bands, Tonic Thief and Infinite Children, there has risen a new local Rhode Island band: The If.

The If can be loud and aggressive without being a metal band; they can improvise and “jam” without being a jam band; they can be jazzy, experimental and progressive without being pretentious. One thing is for certain – this is … some kind of rock music.

The band has not personally stated any specific influences, but listeners/fans have dropped a few names including King Crimson, Primus, Pixies and even the early 80's hardcore punk outfit Minutemen.

The If has a definitive “sound” seemingly unlike any other group. Their main reach is clearly in the actual music, with a strong focus on instrumentation; mind-boggling riffs, odd time signatures, abrupt tempo changes and unconventional-yet-catchy jazz chord progressions lurk behind every corner. While vocals may not be the band’s main focal point, the lyrics are always cynical, satirical and witty, often commenting on the more embarrassing aspects of American life and the ironies of the human condition.

If you’re looking for some new music that is simple, familiar, and comfortable…well, you should have stopped reading this bio a while ago. If you want to be surprised, confused and equally inspired, this is the band for you.

The If is comprised of Brian Anderson (guitar, vocals), Todd Grenier (bass, vocals) and David Coppola (drums). Their debut album Underground Music has been recently mastered and awaits distribution.
