Biography

“The Influence shimmers like sun through the thunderclouds!” – The Washington Post

The Influence – a modern-rock five-piece based in Virginia Beach – are at the vanguard of the East Coast music scene. The band is influenced by the familiar sounds of the great 90’s rock movement but is undeniably rooted in late 60’s and early 70’s rock sensibility. Critics have compared the band’s music to recent releases from acts such as Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon. They combine all the lasting contributions of Rock & Roll tradition into an innovative, fresh sound that continues to break boundaries.

Matthew Archer Stephenson’s smoky vocals provide a candid look into the harsher, more provocative themes usually locked deep within the vaults of more tortured minds. Channeling the introspective and often desperate ideas in the songs are the beautiful intermingling guitars of Chris Kendrick and Will Clarke. The passion in each song is striking when paired with the dynamic rhythms of drummer Collin Cogan and bassist Chris Tully. The Influence’s on-stage delivery is pure chaos in its search for perfection. The band’s raw performances showcase tag-team drum solos and explosive choruses with multiple backing harmonies, leaving the stage dismantled and the audience enamored.

The Influence’s impressive tour history includes venues ranging from college bars and historic Rock & Roll clubs to festivals and arenas. National acts such as Jimmy Eat World, Silverchair and Paramore along with scores of regional artists have shared the stage with The Influence over the last four years. Word of the band’s formidable live show and studio work has spread to various local and national media outlets earning The Influence numerous awards and accolades.

The Influence released their third album “Falling Objects” in September of 2010 with Sony/RED with the support of producer Ted Comerford (Jukebox the Ghost). Included on the project were mixer Ian Schrier (Velvet Revolver) and masterer David Collins (Soundgarden).

Lyrics

Falling Objects

Written By: The Influence

Hold on to your breath,
And forget everything,
You think you know,

Say I am falling,
Just as fast as you,

I can bend the wind,
Into something I can use

To get by.

We're all falling object,
All falling object,
One day we will rest,
One day we will rest

We're all falling object,
All falling object,
One day we will rest,

Until then,
We're southern bound.

We're so lost,
In our heads,
Your things mean nothing,
In the end,
You,ll find,

We're all falling,
Just as fast as you,

I can bend the wind,
Into something I can use,

To get high.

We're all falling object,
All falling object,
One day we will rest,
One day we will rest

We're all falling object,
All falling object,
One day we will rest,

Let's dig a hole,
And bury all of our treasures,
Breathe in,
That's not your life

Oh let's dig a hole,
Before you dig yourself deeper,
Relax,
That's not your life.

Oh sing it,
Sing it now,
That's not my life

Oh sing it,
Sing it now,
That's not my life

We're all falling object,
All falling object,
One day we will rest,
One day we will rest

Ocean of Mine

Written By: The Influence

I look out over her body
I'm weighing out her curves
I make my way through the chaos
To the peace I find in her

Silence consumes us both
A union we both have longed
I rise out over her body
She crushes me with her song, oh

Echoes shatter my ears
And I'm lost in you
Rolled me head over heels
Helpless underneath you

Underneath you in this bed
I lay
All my discontent has gone away

I'll make my way to the surface
This battle I will lose
A battle I have won
It's only to be with you

Silence consumes us both
A union we both have longed
I rise out over her body
She crushes me with her song, oh

Echoes shatter my ears
And I'm lost in you
Rolled me head over heels
Helpless underneath you

Underneath you in this bed
I lay
All my discontent has gone away

Away, Away, Away

Slippin'

No la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

No la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

I feel my concience failing,
Slipped away,
I might have lost it all,
Oh.

No la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

No la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

I feel my concience failing,
Slipped away,
I might have lost

Controlling us with fear,
These lies,
They chase me,
Chase me down,

All because we're here,
This world,
Keep on slippin',
Slippin' down

No la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

No la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

I feel my concience failing,
Slipped away,
I might have lost

All because we're here
These lies,
Keep on slippin',
Slippin' down

All because we're here,
This world,
Keep on slippin',
Slippin' down

La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

la da da da,
La da da da,
La da da da,
La da da

It's all because we're here,
These lies,
Keep on slippin',
Slippin' down

All because we're here,
This world,
Keep on slippin' down.

Colorado Laser Storm

Written By: The Influence

I,
I lost myself out there,
I buried myself,
Amongst the liars,

Well,
I hope,
That your smiling,
Smiling,

I left my soul,
I left my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I left my heart,
And buried my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I buried my soul,

I buried the thought,
I buried the life that we had,
In a box,
Above the mile
My heart,
Shattered my soul,
I can't seem to let go,
Let go,
I bet you're,
Smiling, smiling now,

I left my soul,
I left my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I left my heart,
And buried my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I buried my soul.

Surprise, surprise,
Another lie comes,
Spewing from you,
Where do you get off,
It's getting old,
Getting old,

I left my soul,
I left my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I left my heart,
And buried my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,

I left my soul,
I left my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I left my heart,
And buried my soul,
In Colorado,
Colorado,
I buried my soul

Old Bones

Written By: The Influence

Would you believe in angels baby,
If you had just one day to live,
Would you take time to thank your mother,
For all the good things,
For all the good things,

Crawl into the nightmare,
Crawl into the next life,
Try to get it right this time,
Crawl into a new life,

We made our way out of the desert
A vicious cloud came down from above,
Outrun the rain before we're empty,
And we'll be good,
We'll be good,

Crawl into the nightmare,
Crawl into the next life,
Try to get it right this time,
Crawl into a new life,

Old bones in the desert sun,
We are, we are, we all just
Crawl into the nightmare,
Crawl into the next life,
Try to get it right this time,
Crawl into a new life,

Was it good?
Was it good?
Was it good?
