The Inner Clockwork

The Inner Clockwork

BandAlternativeFunk

Our band is an eclectic mix of Alternative Rock, Funk, Latin, & Reggae. Each song is completely different from the next and that always keeps our listen engaged from beginning of the set to the end. Our influences range anywhere from John Frusicante to the The Cure to Black Uhuru to Malo.

Biography

The seed of 'The Inner Clockwork' was planted in the fall of 2003. As a jam group based in Whittier, California (loosely named 'Jupiter'), it consisted of Anthony Colombo, Anthony's brother, Jonathan Valdez, and various local musicians. They began experimenting with free form jamming that stemmed from such influences as 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor', 'The Mahavishnu Orchestra', 'Miles Davis', 'The Cure' and 'The Mars Volta'. The group played periodically until the Spring of 2005, when Jon and a peer from college formed the group 'The Talkies' (along with other local musicians including Marcus Ryckman for a few jam sessions). 'The Talkies' were moving towards combining its Virtuoso Progressive roots with more Psychedelic Alternative rock that was influenced by 'Pink Floyd', 'Mogwai', 'My Bloody Valentine', and 'The Smiths'. From then on, the foundations of 'The Inner Clockwork' had rooted itself for what was to come.

One night, while ‘The Talkies' were setting up to record, Anthony was asked to sit in on the drums while the current drummer sound checked the mic levels on his home recording studio. A small jam ensued, which left 'The Talkies' wanting to play with him full-time, hence making Anthony the new drummer. Shortly after Anthony joined, the band changed its name to 'The Inner Clockwork'. Now based in Fullerton, California, they continued to practice extensively throughout the Summer of 2005, playing only a couple of shows that summer. In the Fall of 2005, Marcus was added to group. Bringing his Funk and Reggae influences, and Jon's Latin influences surfacing, the band's styles expanded immensely (additional influences including 'James Brown', 'Steel Pulse', 'Malo', 'Black Uhuru', 'Buena Vista Social Club', and 'Santana').

The band played locally in Uptown Whittier, Downtown Fullerton, and Anaheim. Forging through the trenches as an upcoming band, 'The Inner Clockwork' had to deal with being taken advantage of by promoters, dealing with vices and sacrificing their own ego for the greater good of the group. Since the Fall of 2006, the band had been playing
extensively in loose groups but during this time, no matter what happened, this trio always remained: Jonathan Valdez on Guitar, Marcus Ryckman on Bass, and Anthony Colombo on Drums.

In the Spring of 2007, with Jonathan, Anthony, and Marcus determined to play for the long haul, long time friend and recording engineer Kyle Manns insisted that he had the perfect singer for the group, Andrew Cohn. Lead singer of 'Curtis Brightwater', Andrew was ready to move on from his current project he'd been working on. The group had moved into a house together for several years, trying to survive on music. Eventually, the band dissipated and with Andrew looking for a new project, 'The Inner Clockwork' was perfect in his crosshairs. The practice date was set to see if Andrew was all what Kyle had said, and needless to say after that, Andrew became the Vocalist for 'The Inner Clockwork'. With the line-up now set, the band has been busy writing/recording/and performing at most of the local hot spots like 'The Alley' in Fullerton, 'Linda's Doll Hut' and the 'House of Blues' in Anaheim.
