Bio

The Isas are a bit weird. They play original American rock music influenced by funk, country, folk and 70’s classics. OK, that's not so weird. What's unusual is that they do it in Mexico. To make things weirder, their lead singer and guitarist is also a foreign journalist, and he tells the tales of his adventures through his songs. A native of Los Angeles, CA, Jens Erik writes and performs in Mexico City. He has traveled much of Latin America and performed in the U.S., Venezuela, France and Belgium.

Jens' lyrics draw on his travels and adventures to tell stories that are snapshots of people's lives. Some songs are about tragic events and offer ways to transcend them: from kidnapped friends (“Lay Guns Down”) to the heartbreaking lives of migrant workers (“Algerian Sun”) to witnessing a plane crash (“City Tonight”). Other songs are about life experiences many of us can relate to: like sitting pissed off in traffic, getting dumped and being fired (“Spaceship”); watching your parents' divorce (“What a Night”), and mustering up the balls to kiss the girl you like (“Downstairs”).

Isas bassist and horn player Ulises Tello is a Mexico City native who is a university professor of music, operates a recording studio, puts on concerts at one of Mexico’s City’s top museums, and directs and composes for Mexico City-based jazz band Chicles de Mora. Drummer and percussionist Jorje Alfaro has played with numerous rock, jazz and funk bands based in Mexico City.
