The Ivory Project is a music project infusing acoustic instrumentation with electronic beats and melodic pop narratives. The music is performed by sexy front woman Jessica Brooks, whose sultry voice and innocent stage presence creates a perfect juxtaposition to the urban beats she works with.

Biography

The Ivory Project is the newest body of work from singer/songwriter Jessica Brooks. A musician since the age of 5, Jessica grew up on Quadra Island, off the West Coast of Canada. She studied piano and clarinet before Kurt Cobain’s influence led her to pick up a guitar and begin writing songs. In 2003, when Jessica was living in Toronto, she played host to The 7th Floor Film Production Company during the Toronto Film Festival. Jessica tagged along with her houseguests to the various festival parties. The 7th Floor nicknamed their young host ‘Ivory’, and began introducing her as such. The name stuck. After completing university, Jessica (aka Ivory) moved to New York, where she immersed herself in the music scene and formed the band Captain and Ivory. Jessica played the role of both producer and songwriter, bringing together various musicians with her raw passion for creating music. Jessica’s songwriting talents and unique voice caught the ears of hip hop producer Marshall Law, who asked her to sing on a mixtape that he was working on. In exchange, he gave her one of his beat tracks. She took it home, wrote lyrics to it, and showed up the next day knocking on his studio door. They laid the first version of the track down in a ten hour studio session that same day. Jessica returned to Toronto to co-produce RAISE, where she showcased her track Our Place Now. She performed with a backup singer and choreographed dance moves as the beats played over the sound system. Jessica’s work caught the ears of her old friends at The 7th Floor. They introduced her to Saundi Wilson, a Brooklyn born composer, and as a collective they began work on The Ivory Project. Jessica spent summer 2006 in Los Angeles, recording The Ivory Project demo and writing future tracks.

Soldier

Songwriter: Jessica Brooks

Face falls into hands, over legs, collapsing shoulders
Stand up straight now you were trained to be a soldier
If this is love, we’ve got to fight to make it last
I will not surrender, just to lose this all so fast

Let me go now before you disarm me with your eyes
I put my helmet on as protection from your cries
It’s survival of the fittest yah a game we’re born to play
If you don’t know the rules, then you should have stayed away

I’m going now, goodbye
I’m going now, I’m not afraid to die
For you, love,
at least you know I tried
I’m going now, goodbye

Didn’t I tell you once to take away, to take yourself away
Didn’t I tell you once not to let your strange ways in these days
The captains’ calling and we’re heading out to war
The balanced fleet is ready but you lie here on the floor

I thought I warned you things are not as they appear
The enemy is upon us as all our lovers shed a tear
It’s survival of the fittest yah
A game we’re born to play
If you don’t know the rules, then you should have stayed away

I’m going now, goodbye
I’m going now, I’m not afraid to die
For you, love,
at least you’ll know I tried
I’m going now, goodbye

I’m going now, goodbye
I’m going now, I’m not afraid to die
For you, love,
at least you’ll know I tried
I’m going now, goodbye

Our Place Now

Written By: Jessica Brooks

OUR PLACE NOW

I can’t sleep past seven
Or any later on the weekend
They say there’s many steps to heaven
I think heaven’s all around

Everyday I get up before you’re awake
I roll the cover off our car
I drive really fast down the highway
With not a care of what to do today

My hair blows out behind me and I fly away
I think we’ve made it
And the rest just fades away

Look, we finally made it
This place, this place is ours now
We must be the luckiest in the world
This place, this place is ours now

It’s sticky when it’s hot
And cold when you wait
I make my way home so I won’t be late
To watch, you wake
To watch, you wake

I can’t sleep past seven
Or any later on the weekend
They say there’s many steps to heaven
I think heaven’s all around

Look, we finally made it
This place, this place is ours now
We must be the luckiest in the world
This place, this place is ours now

Look we finally made it
This place, this place is ours now
We must be the luckiest in the world
This place, this place is ours now
