"EP Review: The Jagged Violet Wands"

Sound the death knell for another local band because, as of this Halloween, folksy bluesy busker four-piece Miss Nic Nevet are no more. Friday’s EP launch, and this corresponding collection, in fact signalled the demise of the band – but thankfully in title only. For the talented quartet have simply embraced a fuller sound complete with an image overhaul and name change. Whereas “Miss Nic Nevet” suggested the project was a vehicle solely for the talents of the wonderful Ms Madill: The Jagged Violet moniker hints at a more cohesive entity and a distinct band mentality – an allusion furthered with the fleshed out sounds of debut EP ‘Wands’. Never is this new musical expansion more apparent than on the title track itself – with wavering, dirty guitar riff’s now neatly accompanying the echoey, almost angelic, strains of the front woman. This exciting blend sees the song transformed from it’s previously acoustic stylings into a full on blues experience. In fact each of the six, self penned, creations have been given The Jagged Violet treatment to some extent with ‘Wanderin’ Blues’ and ‘Long Hazy Dusty Ride Home’ sounding particularly kick ass. ‘Wands’ the collection therefore works two-fold: celebrating almost two years hard work whilst simultaneously introducing a new direction and band name. It may seem brave to some for a re-brand at this stage but this EP proves The Jagged Violet to be less a complete overhaul of Miss Nic Nevet, and more of a natural, almost organic progression. Exciting times lay ahead for this entertaining blues four piece - dundee muso

Bio

The Jagged Violet are a bluesy four piece from the east coast of Scotland. Formerly known as Miss Nic Nevet, they have been gigging for the past year around Scotland and had their festival debut at The Leeds Festival this summer. They recently launched their new name and their first EP entitled ‘Wands’ in an old gothic church on Halloween whilst at the same time, giving their old name a funeral.

The band started with front woman Miss Nic performing at open mic nights and over the past 12 months the band have grown both musically and as a group into a full time performing set up. Their own musical style is probably best described as Blues Americana with lots of slide guitar, harmonica and a combination of blues, country and folk melodies. Influences include Neil Young, The Dead Weather and Sheryl Crow. They also perform a wide variety of covers including Bob Dylan, The White Stripes and Fleetwood Mac.

Their intentions for 2012 are to travel lots, perform alongside likeminded musicians and to write more tunes.
