The Jamerikan

Helping his country and changing the world is Kemar Leamy’s ultimate goal in life.
His tool: Music.

Known as The Jamerikan in tribute to both his Jamaican heritage and American upbringing, Leamy plans to touch the world with his message and help fight poverty and violence in his home country with his success. He believes music should not have genres because no label can truly describe an artist or their work.

Originally from the Santa Cruz parish, near the Black River in Jamaica, Leamy was brought to the U.S. at the age of seven by his father; a man he would only live with for a year before being put into foster care.

By the age of 18 he had lived with eight or nine different families, all of whom were not Jamaican. Coping with each new family and any other problems in life was eased by music.

Not only listening to music, but also creating his own gave him the strength to overcome anything. with the biggest influence coming from Tupac Shakur.

“Pac made songs to help the world and had a positive influence on people. He was able to capture someone’s heart, change their mind and help them cope with reality. I have the hunger, passion and voice to do that,” Leamy says.

While Tupac showed him a goal to have for his music, it was artists such as Lauren Hill, The Fugees, Outkast, Andre 3000 and Linkin Park that showed him the creative side to music. It also showed him that you can still make it in the music industry without trying to be like everyone else.

Not being like everyone else is a fact that Leamy struggled with early in his life as he tried to figure out why he was the one of seven siblings and many cousins to be taken away from a country of violence and poverty. He often questioned God’s motives and the reason for his bad relationship with his father. However, as a junior in high school he realized that without pain and difficulty he wouldn’t be who he is.

Leamy started to embrace his differences, take strength from his pain and enjoy life’s obstacles.

Another big influence is his mother who approaches life with an attitude to never give up or take anything from anyone. As one of eight children, she was the first in her family to graduate high school and to buy her own car.

“She did everything she had to be successful and transferred those traits to me. I love her a lot because of her presence in my life,” Leamy says.

For The Jamerikan, Every day is a mission to fulfill his promises to himself, to his country and to his mother.
