"Fast and High Energy From The Janissary at The Basement"

Fast and High Energy from The Janissary at the Basement
Submitted by borkabrak on Tue, 08/21/2007 - 8:26am.

A fast-rapping little blonde girl behind a red guitar and large black shades shares the stage with a gypsy violinist who breaks into impromptu dancing, prompting the percussionist to lead a minutes-long jam, slowly joined by the drummer, the bassist, and a strange sounding set of keys, finally dissolving in a wave of delighted and slightly awed applause.
I had a *significant* amount of fun a couple of Wednesdays ago, checking out The Janissary, a smooth new trip-hop ensemble from here in Nashville that really knows their instruments. They're less than a year old as a group, and have a significantly different sound than most of what's currently available on the scene.
Fast without being frenetic, and high energy without being dance-happy. I'd heard their music before, but was pleasantly surprised to find that the live show was a treat that cannot be experienced solely through the ears.

Bio

A mind-blowing organic blend of groove, melody, atmosphere, and chemistry, The Janissary takes the most delightful moods and expresses them through their intricate arrangements and down right nasty grooves. Setting seed as a vocals-on-beats trip-hop project and growing full bloom into the beautiful sonic landscape that has become the most original sound Nashville has ever heard, this group of talented and tasteful musicians has been breathing melodic oxygen into the hearts and minds of the finest music lovers around and manage to make them crave more and more every time with their stylistic percussiveness and raw energy on stage. Don’t Miss Out! Michael Linder (Bizwak) is the co-founder, original composer of the beats and audio engineer extraordinaire. Now, he makes his living layin down tracks for CBS and lays down the foundation on the drum kit. As the other founding member, Sharon Lang (Sharone Digitale) arranges melodies and applies rhythmic, seductive vocals and a sexy, sugar-sweet guitar to the mix. J-Sun Siegel (The Flarf) has found his passion setting thick vibrations and smooth grooves for The Janissary playing both electric and upright basses, and occasionally a little guitar. Josh (chet) Minyard, being the only band member from TN makes his mark as the rythmic soldier and sets the pace, adds intense flavor and a touch of color to the mix with his assortment of percussion toys. Corey Taylor manages to create the necessary filling for the perfectly crafted pie shell with his assortment of electronic devices and keyboards. The Janissary is purely original and completely infectious. You can show your support by purchasing the Debut EP, Class Thought, which was released in May of 2007 and is available on iTunes, Napster, and many, many other digital subscribers. The Janissary has a digital distribution deal with Nashville Noir and also has CD’s for sale at Grimey’s, and The Groove
