Bio

In January 2008 the Jems were born. While singer/songwriter Emily Lively was waiting tables at a bar on Main Street in a small Texas Hill Country town, multi-instrumentalist Jay Whitehead was making cheese trays at a local wine bar two blocks away. In a small town, if you play music, you usually know all the other people that play music, but in this situation Emily and Jay didn’t know one another as fellow musicians, but they did notice each other right away. To make a long story short, they met and very quickly started making music. Bringing together a rare blend of ideas, talent, and wit.

Now, a year later they are playing all over the Hill Country and Austin, and frequently visit the Midwest, gaining new fans every trip. They are celebrating the birth of their first full length record, Little Things, released by Muse Records in December 2008. Emily was a regional New Folk winner at the 2008 Kerrville Folk Festival, and Rick Starr of the Americana Music Association and Texas Rebel Radio says, “Wistful and profound, its all good when your ears are tuned to The Jems.”
