The Kinky Tuscaderos

It is a well-documented national tragedy that there is a genuine dearth of bands that wear matching black suits while flooring audiences with sparkling indie pop-rock mixed with the occasional garage-rock classic.
To address this crisis, Mary LaSang and Ron Hotstream, armed only with incredible talent, decades of experience with a host of bands, and the audacity of hope, formed The Kinky Tuscaderos.
Mary, originally from Thibodaux, La., has been playing in and around New Orleans since 1987. Starting as the keyboardist for Jet Screamer, she moved on to session work in Philadelphia. She returned to New Orleans and played with a number of bands, including the Proud Marys. In 1997, she joined Ron in the much beloved Isaac’s Guns. Since 2001, she has also played bass with Cowboy Mouth, Kim Carson, and Paul Sanchez and the Rolling Road Show before forming the Kinky Tuscaderos in early 2008. In this setting, Mary has begun to take charge, writing more songs and taking her beautiful voice out from the proverbial bushel.
Ron Hotstream has been playing guitar since the tender age of nine, writing songs and leading bands since age 15. In the last 20 years, Ron has fronted and played lead guitar in The Villains, The Human Condition, Joy Buzzer, and Dr. A-Go-Go, among others. Additionally, he has joined Peabody on guitar since 2001.
Along with his prodigious songwriting talent, scary guitar chops, and silky baritone, Ron is the Kinky T’s resident expert in oddball garage-rock gems.
While it may not be a local supergroup per se, the Kinky Tuscaderos also include singer/songwriter/bandleader Ruby Rendrag on rhythm guitar and vocals (she of the Ann Wilson pipes, Nancy Wilson guitar fury, Rita Wilson hair luxury, and supposedly born of hobo royalty), and Chris Bailey on drums, who is also the co-founder and lyricist of Peabody, one of New Orleans’ great alternative bands for nearly two decades. Rounding out the line-up is Eric Pitts on keyboards, backing vocals, and a mind-blowing rendition of The Mighty Hannibal’s “The Truth Shall Make You Free.”
The Kinky Tuscaderos may not be aiming for world domination, but they will nevertheless be our musical masters soon enough. If you get on the bandwagon now, you may be anointed as one of the kinky elect.
