"Review of "This Is Your Lung" EP"

Review of The Kits’ “This Is Your Lung” EP:

‘The Kits are one of Melbourne’s finest, and This Is Your Lung sees them living up to those wraps... At once raucous yet sublimely cultured in the band's grasp of song construction, and with a comprehension of rock that adds up to years worth of faded denim, beer stains and pained kidneys, This Is Your Lung manages to perfectly encapsulate the sound of Melbourne. It’s a soundtrack to walking through back alleyways, throwing down booze in a tiny bar, picking up some random and leaving her exhausted, satisfied and in love the next morning. A Dangerous Life contains reams of The Von Bondies duking it out with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club about which Robert Cray album was best, but with a certain drunken blues swagger that, whilst it feels like Melbourne, is totally universal for ‘don’t f#*k with me’. That’s totally right. You f#*k…’

The Kits' Caboodle

The Kits are a ’60s-styled garage rock band from Australia. If that amuses you, remember that the hallowed garage revivalists Hoodoo Gurus hail from the same continent, not to mention actual ’60s rock gods The Easybeats, who growled “Friday on My Mind.”

What The Kits have on their mind, as documented on their savage five-song EP This is Your Lung , is a blues-rooted punk-drived rave-up which mixes and matches wails and thumps from multiple rock and indie genres—Stones, Clash and Australia’s own The Saints. It’s respectful of its elders, it’s fresh, it’s a panic.

The solo on “City to City,” a call-and-repeat blast which recalls early New Wavers like The Nerves or The Nervous Eaters, has one of those perfect guitar solos that is dirty and distorted yet trim, almost tasteful, so cannily constructed it cuts right through you.

We’re not the only country with garages. Consider this your car’s sonic emergency Kits.

"Live review - @100 Club."

London based Aussie garage-rockers The Kits set the tone in style, the snarled delivery of their ragged ramalama harking back to the days when rock 'n' roll was considered a threat to the morals of the world's youth. There's nothing in their sound that suggests they've recently listened to a record made this decade, and that simply adds to their charm.

"Single Review"

When it comes to garage rock n roll, you can count on Dirty Water Club supremo PJ Crittenden to separate the wheat from the chaff. With an ear for a proper gritty nugget, PJ has recently added Aussie rockers The Kits to his Dirty Water label.

'Don't Want to Lose This Fight' will be released on June 16th and it's a cracker of a 7inch. It's the real deal people. Not shiny or big budget, the two tracks on the single smack of authenticity, reminding of The Saints and The Chob. With a reputation for raucous live performances, it's no surprise that the band are drawing Black Lips comparisons too.
Luckily, you won't have to travel to the other side of the world to see them, as they're now based in London.

Bio

Recent Activity.

Currently hard at work rehearsing material for their orthcomming second album The Kits are due back on the road for extensive dates through France, Spain and Portugal in October.

The first single of the new album is due around this time with the band hoping to finish 2009 off with a few dates in the UK.

Early 2010 should see them returning to Australia where enthusiastic media reaction to The Kits album ‘Primitive Tales’ during the bands Australian Jan / Feb Promo Tour saw venues selling well.

The Back Story.

Formed by brothers Kit & Jay Atkinson - The Kits originally hail from Melbourne Australia.

After two years of playing the circuit in Melbourne the band developed a well earned reputation for intense live shows. As their sound developed they found themselves drawing an audience that responded to the Kits unique slant on the garage style.

2006 saw the band release their ‘This is your Lung’ ep. Four tracks that took the stomp and grit of the ’50s and ’60s and gave it the injection of eternal youth through relentless guitar hooks and snarling vocals.

Their move to London in 2007 moulded The Kits sound in the crucible of the UK’s unforgiving club circuit.

Soon, live shows delivered blow after blow of driving material, showcasing new and now permanent members Marc Bonet from Spain and Michael Cleverly from New Zealand.

The Kits’ tales of crime, addiction and short-lived romances have resulted in a rapturous UK following and earned them supports with The Dirtbombs, Wolfmother, The Saints and The Nightmarchers. These slots plus regular shows at the Boston Arms in Tufnell Park, where the notoriously hard audiences have adopted the band as their own led to a deal with industry respected Dirty Water Records.

2008 saw the release of The Kits CD ‘Primitive Tales’

Released on CD and Vinyl it was recorded in sessions at various London studios selected for their on board equipment or room acoustics. The albums opening track ‘ Primitive Tales’ and Australian A Side single ‘Get Closer’ were recorded at Gizzard Studios (with Ed Deegan – The Cribs, Cornershop). UK Single ‘Don’t want to lose this fight’ and ‘She’s the number one’ were taped at Liam Watson’s famous analogue workshop Toe Rag Studios (White Stripes, The Kills).

Make no mistake; The Kits are a rock'n'roll band. From the opening snare roll of the title track, Primitive Tales doesn't let up over the course of the 11 songs on offer. This is a robust collection of raucous barroom tunes, performed by a band confident with their delivery and clearly in love with what they're doing.

Preceded by a 7 inch release both the UK single and album have received critical acclaim and strong sales.
