"A Celtic/folk/rock Christmas Celebration"

Fuck peace on earth, good will towards men, and flying reindeer—you know what Christmas is really all about? The answer is gluttony. That’s right, stuffing your face with enough shortbread cookies and mincemeat tarts to give yourself gout, and chugging back the booze in quantities guaranteed to turn ye olde liver into something resembling mould-caked Swiss cheese. Don’t bother fighting it. Instead, head to the Billy Bishop Legion hall on Saturday (December 18) for what’s being billed as a Celtic folk-rock celebration featuring the Knackers (above), the Whiskey Dicks, the Gentle Infidels, the Creaking Planks, Craic!, and Cameron Gunn. If said bands have something in common, it’s that they enjoy a good party. And really, what screams party like Christmas—which is another way of saying we don’t want to see you put that bottle down until you’re one shot away from honking your guts out on the dance floor. - The Georgia Straight

Bio

The Knackers are a four-piece Celtic/folk/rock ensemble consisting of acoustic guitars, fiddle, bass and drums. The band enjoys playing upbeat, hard hitting, socially and emotionally conscious music. The Knackers music combines Irish/Scottish and Canadian Traditional influences with strong, original songs and stories from the colorful culture and history of Canadian living. Laurence O’Grogan writes and composes the music and lyrics for The Knackers, and plays rhythm guitar and is the lead vocalist. He is also a graduate of The Arts and Entertainment Management Certificate Program from Capilano University. His words tell stories of the working class, the hard drinking, of down and out hobo logic, of sticking it to “the man” with a gaze from the gutter, of lost love and new hopes and which is all at once dark and full of humour and romance. Laurence has been playing and singing for 15 years and has spent a portion of his life in Ireland studying the music and culture. Drummer, Chris Bowman, has been honing his craft for 20 years and is the co-founder of The Knackers. With a rock background, he has played with bands ranging from speed metal to prog, from hard rock to country rock; Bowman brings an undeniable energy to the stage. Bassist, Micheal Wagler holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Capilano University, and is a veritable fountain of knowledge and inspiration. He and his soldier in arms, Bowman, form an impenetrable wall of rhythm. Alex Taub, a classically trained violinist, whose fiddle playing is both powerful and graceful, brings a wealth of musical genres and experience. The Knackers have performed many successful live shows, including a set at a sold out festival at Vancouver’s The Centre for the Performing Arts, many pub shows, a handful of weddings as well as wakes, birthday’s, and house parties. Their live show is vibrant and entertaining; full of heart it moves from lilting ballads to rowdy Celtic grooves, getting their audience up and dancing every time. They’ve also written and recorded a theme song for a skit comedy television show for The Freakishly Fine Film Co. As well as taken part in professionally filmed documentary of a comedy /music festival also with The Freakishly Fine film Co. The Knackers aspire to preserve traditional music and inspire new, young and old listeners to get up and forget their troubles, if just for one song.
