""...sometimes the guitars were drifting off into shoegaze territory. Classy and well-composed.""

Crowd: Walking into The Velvet Underground, I once again was faced with the fact that the goth scene is dead. The same 10 people near the stage and some lazy observers at the bar.. At least they were clapping after each song.
Style: Good old Gothic Rock. Sometimes I could hear Joy Division, sometimes the guitars were drifting off into shoegaze territory. Classy and well-composed.
Technicalities: No problems were detected.
Memorable Song/Moment: The Knievel Dead provided the crowd with a great musical experience overall.
Sex Appeal/Image: Very post-punk. All-black outfits, dress shirts and skinny ties.
Comments: I am very disappointed that more NXNE-goers didn’t check this band out. You guys missed out.

""...one of the best-kept secrets on the planet...""

“The Knievel Dead’s website offers us the options of News, Audio, Video, Images, Live and Links. But not, alas, anything called Biog or About. I eventually supplied the following info on their Bandcamp page: “London based via the North East singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist in the form of The Knievel Dead produces a blend of haunted malaise and harmonious alternative sound waves. Conceived after the break down of The Night Terrors whose demise spurred on the initiation to produce the début album And We Sleep”. Said album was in fact launched this Saturday with a gig at the Dublin Castle in London, where former Night Terrors members Odel and Joe were joined by messrs Jeremy Knievel and Old Greg (possibly not their given names.) Apart from that, web-wise at least, their album release seems to be one of the best-kept secrets on the planet. Which is a shame because it’s damn good.” - Tom Robinson BBC Radio 6music

"Overall “And we sleep” would be the ideal soundtrack to an apocalyptic film..."

“Listening to the first notes of the album, one could say that the Knievel Dead is surely a tribe of hairy bikers riding their Harleys down an open highway eating a ham sandwich…

Looking more closely one learns with amazement that behind all this there is only one man - young 30yr old Londoner Odel who has recorded almost the entirety of the project from his home!

OK with respect, I carefully plunge into the 9 tracks that make up “And we sleep”, scheduled for release on August 25 (release party in full at Camden’s Dublin Castle on that same day)…

Some good influences emerge, musically from the cold side of Joy Division to the melodic tunes of the Smiths, vocally ranging from Jim Morrison to Jeff Buckley, the intonations tending to vary gradually over the songs…

Overall “And we sleep” would be the ideal soundtrack to an apocalyptic film where the hero would pass their time running to try and escape from a certain and programmed death, a mixture of hope and anxiety.

So a successful effort from Odel, the multi-instrumentalist who manages to entice us into his world and his room… that certainly is haunted…” - GBH Music

Bio

Based in London, the intensely sinister indie rock exploit The Knievel Dead formed in September 2012 with the release of their first album ‘And We Sleep’ at The Dublin Castle in Camden.

This first offering quickly found its way onto BBC 6Music’s Mixtape with Tom Robinson, as well as Shoreditch Radio. Shortly after The Knievel Dead were selected for NXNE 2013 in Toronto, Canada. This coincided with their 2nd release, in the form of a 3-track EP titled ‘Psychosis’ which was also featured on Shell Zenner’s Amazing Radio show, Roundhouse Radio and Zoe Bryant’s Hoxton Radio show. In 2014 the band headlined Hi-Hat Festival in Szczecinek, Poland.

The band released their second album ‘We Will Fall’ into the wild with a launch party at The Enterprise, in early March 2015. However, shortly after this release, the original line up disbanded and a period of silence occurred. Since then, front man Odel has been locked away writing new material. Now with a new line up, The Knievel Dead rise again and are recording and rehearsing for a new set of shows to come in 2017. Watch this space!
