Leonard Cohen meets Music From Big Pink

Biography

This is essentially a songwriting project. I have been fooling around with these songs for years, and they won't go away. The name of the project is from Walker Percy's novel Love in the Ruins. It refers to a device which measures how far a person has fallen from grace. At least that was its original intent. Enhanced with the intention of providing a means of reducing that distance, it becomes a source of trouble.

Lost in the World

Lost in the World
by Maclin Horton

Oh come and find me
I'm lost in the world
Living on the coastline
where the tall waves curl
The waves are like mountains and
the rain is like steel
I'm a little bit more than nothing
a little bit less than real

Oh come and find me
I'm lost in the world
Living in the desert
where the dust devils whirl
Hiding my eyes
from a sky like fire
I ought to take some action
but I don't know what's required

Oh come and find me
I'm lost in the world
Living in the forest and
I see the white smoke curl
From the fires of my pursuers
they're closer every night
And I don't want to face them
I think they're in the right

Someone has been calling
my name from time to time
Up here on this mountain I thought
no one else could climb
Someone has been stumbling around
in the rocky snow outside
I hope that it's my savior
I have no place to hide

Everything Has Changed

Written By: Maclin Horton

Things were fine until you came along
We did not tell sad stories or sing sad songs
But you came along with your one good eye
Spreading rumors and telling lies
And since you showed up everything has changed

These things which so disturb you, they're not new
You've got no right to tell us what to do
You're a little bit crazy, I do believe
If you don't like us, why don't you leave?
And since you showed up everything has changed

I saw you just the other afternoon
You thought you were all alone
Down by the creek bank talking to
A pile of dried-up bones
I wish you would just go home

Jenny always was an easy touch
She was always there and she never asked for much
But now she says she's someone else
She says she's learned to respect herself
And since you showed up Jenny ain't been the same

Joey was a heartache to his maw
Constantly in trouble with the law
Now he's got a strange look in his eye
Walks around staring up at the sky
And since you showed up Joey ain't been the same

I saw you just the other afternoon ...(repeat)

Cause things were fine until you came along...(repeat)
